Even if you don't like Ianthe Tridentarius, you gotta hand her one thing:

She is so unapologetic in her bullshit. No doubt, no remorse, no hesiatiton. She took one look at the trials, she saw people die and she went "Yeah, I get that you died but I'm built different". She stepped up to fight a Lyctor with nothing but Babs' half eaten soul and the power of audacity. She performed a lobotomy on a traumatized nun and the only question she asked was "what is your price range?". She was so ready to open a can of whoopass on Camilla, the fact that she failed does not negate the fact that she is a cringe girlfailure who really thought she was cool there.

Her situationship? More like dictatorship. With who? The resurrected ex of the girl she tried to date. Her boss? God. We know that she is as pleasant to look at as a H. R. Giger painting. She tried the " and there was only one bed" method on Harrow and it didn't work. She is in love with her literal sister but acts comically disgusted towards necro-cavalier relationships (Knowing her sister wants to be her cavalier...) like she is morally superior.

She is one of the characters of all time.

One of the saddest things to me is that Alecto is described as this horrible angry monster by the Lyctors. Every single lyctor is terrified of her, enough that Gideons eyes freaked them the fuck out before they realized she wasn't Alecto. And she is. She is so very angry and monstrous.

Nona is kind. She is cheerful and thoughtful and gloriously kind. Pyrrha, Camilla, Palamedes and Corona can't help but to love her. She has friends and she loves people for you they are and is just wonderful.

Nona is Alecto without the memories of what John did to her. Alecto is Nona without the kindness of Pyrrha, Cam and Pal.

Nona is what Alecto could have been. What Alecto was, before everything.

Something I want to see in Alecto the Ninth

Harrow and Kiriona being PROPPER AGRO to each other in a way that's very emotionally charged, they're miserable and hurt and dealing with it badly etc

And the former Cannan house crew being very "oh no" about it, like, isn't it tragic how trauma has driven them appart

MEANWHILE, Aiglamene is just "wow I have never seen them be so civil, what the fuck happened, it's been days and they haven't even tried to push each other down the drillshaft"

nona the ninth will always be one of the most beautiful and most painful books in the world to me because. it is about love in its every possible form. it's about the love you have for someone who takes care of you and the love you have for those you care for. it's about loving someone after seeing all their rough edges and ugly sides and choosing to love someone even if it hurts and even if you know it might doom you. it's about not choosing to love someone, but loving them anyway because sometimes it's not up to you to choose. it's about loving the dogs on the street and the stranger you met at the park and the child that never speaks to anyone in class. it's about loving the creases in someone's face when they laugh and the way their hips sway and how they can't stand still. it's about your love for the sea and the pang of grief at the tought that it is being poisoned. it's about the immense pain that comes with the loss of someone you loved. it's about bearing that loss, it's about letting that cut burn because its presence means that there was love. and that cannot be taken away. you have loved, you have been loved, and you always will. and the fact that it hurts and it ends doesn't erase the fact that at the end of the day, it's always love at the core of it all. in its every form and expression, by turning into rage, or kindness, or utterly destructive force, it all starts and ends in love. you can't remove that. you can't take loved away.

reading nona is like a neverending parade of lovely things. so many i can’t even parcel them out and exclaim in delight. pyrrha is calling the girls daddy’s own treasures and then nona is saying i love you to the revenant in the sky and then camilla is bleeding out saying it was worth it because she was happy for the brief minute she was with pal and then kevin is doing something complicated and involved with his eraser dolls and nona is saying the sexiest thing she can think of is a shampoo advertisement of flowers and the entire time you’re going “ooh ahh” because everything is full of love and all the little things are what make life worth living and somehow also that teaches you about the laws of the world they’re living in and the ten thousand year old melodrama that created them. also cam has a tally list of how many times nona mentions boobs to see if she’s really gideon … no other book is doing it like this. book of all time

You gotta respec Ianthe's dedication to being a nasty little freak. Shows up to one of the biggest events of her life looking like a wet rag, creepily crawls around in her sister's shadow the whole time they are there, she eats a guy and does not even wipe her face after that, accidentally "breaks up" with her sister, she gets into a fight, loses, meets god and his polycule, does a diy lobotomy, walks around with an arm that's not hers for months before forcing Harrow to give her an upgrade, enthusiasticly talks about the size of her butthole to Gideon in the middle of a fight, saves John and gets fuck all in return, makes friendship bracelets with a corpse, has a romantic reunion with her sister, gets into another fight, loses, talks some more shit, gets into a fight, gets shot...

I wish I could create this much drama

what i really love about this book is the way it flips me off at the end of every single chapter. i think i've got at least some things figured out and it immediately reminds me that i don't know jack shit and i'm a stupid fucking idiot for even bothering to put the pieces together this soon.
