Just preparing for Amazon to buy Tiktok or whatever
I just started listening to Hozier’s discography and as I listen to Wasteland Baby! I realize white people been really outta pocket calling this man "cottagecore" music when his sound literally comes from Black soul, blues, and gospel. And he's loud as hell about being inspired by Black artists but y'all can't help but be antiblack and stay erasing that from discussions about this man's artistry.
No but let's expand on this.
We would not have folk music, especially Americana style folk music, without the contributions of black people and other minority groups or grousp that have faced oppression.
"But he's irish/he uses Irish influence too."
Oppression for the Irish is the other side of the coin. English colonization led to the slave trade and English colonization led to the oppression of the Irish people. Folk music, blues and gospel all have shockingly similar roots.
Yes, people who are in the "cottagecore" aesthetic group usually enjoy these songs, but that doesn't mean their roots are erased. The music will ALWAYS be what it is, whether people realize it at first or not. If anything, it's an opportunity for education. Especially when it comes to hoziers music. His work is incredibly open about being blues and gospel inspired (we literally have Nina cried power for a reason. It's his homage to black music and the civil rights movement. Truly badass.)
Once we start recognizing that oppression, both "old" and current, is where some of our most important art comes from, THATS when we truly begin to understand it. That's when we gain consciousness.
I lock in immediately.
extremely based opinion
I usually hate the fae/elf/woodland shit, but this is 😭
