Canonically Plural

@canonicallyplural

Welcome to canonically plural.

This is a blog that is dedicated to your favorite characters who are canonically plural in some way.

Defining plurality

When I say canonically plural, what I mean is that the characters are depicted with multiple self-conscious agents of some kind sharing a single body.

It should also be long-term rather than characters who just share a body for a few moments. This time limit is relative. If a character is plural for all of their existence, but only exists for a couple hours, they've been plural their whole life. For characters with normal lifespans, I would say their plurality needs to be demonstrated to exist at least over a period of multiple days. But discretion is allowed.

This can take many forms. Venom from Spider-Man has a form of biological plurality where the alien symbiote fuses with a host. Blue Beetle is technological plurality. Moon Knight is both psychological and spiritual.

The Checklist

By my criteria, a character is canonically plural if...

  • The character has multiple agents in their mind/body. ✅
  • These agents share a body for a decent length of time. ✅
  • These other agents possess at least some rudimentary level of self-awareness and memory, and could reflect on past events. ✅
  • You used your best judgement and the submission is in good faith. ✅

If the above criteria are met in canon, the character is canonically plural!

The Good Faith Rule: On the last criterion, note that I won't be researching a lot of these before posting. So please be reasonable and remember the goal of the blog is introducing people to plural characters in different media. I realize that maybe something like the Power Rangers spending a few days in a Megazord can technically fulfill the criteria of multiple people sharing a body if you stretch it enough. So please don't go on a mission to find loopholes to the criteria.

Nothing is metaphorical

Assume for the sake of this that unless something is explicitly stated to be metaphor in the work, it is literally happening within the context of the narrative.

Perhaps the writers of Inside Out wrote the emotions as a metaphor for the emotions of singlets. But within the Inside Out universe, the emotions are actual distinct characters with their own distinct personalities. They have their own memories, their own wants and desires, their own agency. Within the fiction of the Inside Out universe, people are just naturally plural through these self-conscious emotions in their head.

All the characters in Inside Out are canonically plural.

Canonically plural character guidelines

When submitting a character that is canonically plural, please include a description of why you think that they are plural. There's no maximum length but at least a few sentences would be ideal. It doesn't need to be a huge essay. But it at least needs to convey what is plural about the characters.

Please state both the name of the character or characters who are plural, as well as the piece of media they originate from.

Ideally, submissions should use the following template:

[Character Name(s)] from [media name] is canonically plural. [Description of their plurality.]

For example...

Pearl from Steven Universe is canonically plural. In one episode, Steven enters into Pearl's mind through her gem. Inside, she has a layered inner world, each with its own compartmentalized version of her. Each Pearl has its own memories and there are even dissociative barriers between the inner Pearls, where some are just not aware of what other Pearls are doing. There's the main Pearl with control of the body on the outside. There's a Pearl on the surface level of her mind responsible for organizing thing and keeping them neat. And then each layer beneath that holds a different trauma Pearl suffered from her past. One Pearl holds onto the death of the person she loved. And another from her trauma over the deaths of her friends in the war. And another holds onto a trauma from losing who she used to be.

Fanfiction Contributions Guidelines

For those looking to share fanfics, formatting is slightly different!

[Character Name] from [fanfiction name], a(n) [original media name] fanfiction is canonically plural. [Description of their plurality.] [Link to the fanfiction]

The link and the media name help make it easier to locate the fanfic and share fan works about plurality with others. It also helps me what tags to use for the post. Additionally, you can optionally post links to FREE original fiction such as free webcomics or stories that involve plurality.

Self Promotion

If you've written any plural works, you're welcome to share those here too! But please mention if you're the author in the description! Thank you!

And thank you all for your contributions!

Agents of SHIELD is canonically plural!

Major Agents of SHIELD spoilers ahead:

Leo Fitz is canonically plural

In the first season of Agents of SHIELD, Leo Fitz and his best friend Jemma Simmons are shown to be inseparable. At the end of the season, Fitz suffers a traumatic brain injury and Jemma leaves SHIELD between seasons.

With the real Jemma gone, Fitz begins hallucinating another version of her. For the whole first half of the season, the Hallucination Simmons helps Fitz work through his problems, and demonstrates a high degree of self-consciousness and independence indicative of personhood.

Of course, she doesn't see herself as real and is proud when Fitz admits she isn't. But that reaction is what makes her real. Perhaps not physically real, but as her own independent agent, capable of thinking and feeling things separate from the host.

In season 4, the team's consciousnesses are uploaded to a virtual reality called the Framework where they have new lives with new memories.

Most of the team, after coming back, experienced an instant integration of their lives. They felt like one person who had merely lived two different lives.

But Fitz is different. Fitz seems to have dissociated from his Framework self. This is revealed later in season 5 where he sees a version of his evil Framework self, called The Doctor. It's initially believed that The Doctor is a manifestation created by a portal to a nightmare dimension, but it's revealed to have been Fitz the whole time!

The Doctor he saw was merely a hallucination. And when The Doctor is fronting later, he's hallucinating the normal Fitz.

Fitz later admits to have been hearing The Doctor's voice for a while.

While this seems like an evil alter trope on the surface, I actually kind of like how it was handled. The Doctor does bad things, but it's shown that he's actually doing what he thinks is best to protect the world. He's taking steps that Fitz wouldn't. That Fitz would be too weak to. But if he didn't take those steps, innocent people would probably have died.

Ghost Rider is Canonically Plural

Season 4 of Agents of SHIELD introduces us to Robbie Reyes who is the Ghost Rider.

As a Ghost Rider, he has a Spirit of Vengeance in him. Not only does the Spirit of Vengeance take control, but it's suggested they also have internal communication even if the audience doesn't get to hear it. And the Spirit of Vengeance doesn't need to fully transform to front either.

There's one episode where the Spirit of Vengeance leaves Robbie and possesses someone else's body. The Spirit of Vengeance takes full control without fronting, and even has a conversation with Robbie in that form. (This is probably at least partially a result of budget constraints since the Ghost Rider mouth never opened. Having a conversation without transforming was probably cheaper. But whatever the reason, it's canon!)

Headcanon and Speculation: This isn't confirmed or really hinted at in the show itself, but Robbie was killing his uncle Eli Morrow while they were inside a quantum battery together that was being dragged straight to Hell. That specific situation would be perfect to justify having Eli Morrow fuse with Robbie... like he is in the comics. Because one big difference in Agents of SHIELD from the source material is that Robbie in the comics doesn't actually have a Spirit of Vengeance. He's instead possessed by Eli Morrow. (Who in the comics was a satanic serial killer.) Robbie later reappears in one episode with no sign of Eli Morrow. But it would be super easy to reveal that the circumstances surrounding what happened fused them, making Morrow part of Ghost Rider's system. We think this would have been revealed in the cancelled Ghost Rider Hulu series. But alas, they never went through with that!

Graviton is Canonically Plural

In the first season, we're introduced to Franklin Hall and Ian Quinn, two characters working with a rare material called Gravitonium. Hall is absorbed into the Gravitonium and isn't seen again.

Later, Absorbing Man touches the Gravitonium and starts hearing voices in his head as a result. It's then revealed that Ian Quinn was also swallowed by the Gravitonium and that both of their voices are still there.

Finally, a huge amount of the Gravitonium is pumped into General Glenn Talbot through a chamber intended to give the recipient super powers, turning him into the series' incarnation of Graviton.

Besides the natural gravity manipulation powers, Talbot's Graviton can use the Gravitonium to absorb other people. Everyone that he absorbs this way seems to become a new voice in his head.

Lain from Serial Experiments Lain is canonically plural! Counting the host, she has four (five?) alters- Lain, Lain of the Wired, and the "third" and "fourth Lain". Plus, in one scene which she explicitly dissociates, a potential "fifth Lain" is seen interacting with her friends in her place. The "third Lain" causes problems in Lain's social life, spreading one of her friends' secrets, and the "first Lain" has no recollection of this. As I recall, I think that their friend even makes a specific note that the "third Lain" isn't the Lain she knows? But it's been a long time

I'm canonically plural on account of my headmate said so

(Cool blog it's really great)

Welp, can't argue with that! If you have headmates who say you're plural, it has to be canon! 👍

Thanks for your support! Have a wonderful day! 💖

elliot just said i’m not canonically plural ⁉️

what happens now??? -mars

A separate thinking person in your head having the self-awareness and autonomy necessary to deny your plurality is itself proof of plurality!

The female protagonist of Elfen Lied is canonically plural!!

They have 3 alters, all of which front multiple times throughout the series

  1. There's Kaede who is the core / host
  2. There's Lucy who is a persecutor / avenger
  3. And Nyu who is likely a little based on how she acts, and she also appears to be unaware of their trauma

Technically, "Lucy" is just the name given to Kaede when she acts under the influence of the inner voice of the Diclonius Queen gene in her DNA, which would be the actual third alter for the character.

The Cheshire Cat from the Junior version of the Alice in Wonderland musical is canonically plural.

In the musical, the cat is portrayed by three actors. As in, all three are on stage at the same time. They don't "switch out" as in having another actor play the character at times, rather, they all have lines and speak collectively and individually. One of their first lines in the show has them going "I–" "–meaning we–” "meaning me–" "meaning us–". Also, when they first introduce themselves, they say "we are the Cheshire Cat."

what would people want to see in a story focused on a plural main character?

weve seen way too many stories in a row of a plural character being written in ways that just feel kind of off to us, that we now want to try and make something that does it better

what kinds of things would other people be interested in seeing in a story focused on a plural system? (and just genres and general plot ideas maybe? we still arent sure what sort of story to make yet)

current things we want to show are: blurryness, internal communication, working together for daily life, non human headmates. that isnt everything but just what i can think of now off the top of our head

Putting this question out there for the world!

Also, tagging @writing-plurals in case they have anything they want to add here!

The hivemind from The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is canonically plural

disregarding the earlier poll because they're not really a "true" hivemind as individuals can in fact "desync" and need to harmonize in order to regain syncronization. In fact, a character earlier in the musical even said that "on one level they're still individuals" meaning they're not wholly controlled by the "brain" of the hivemind.

.

Anonymous asked:

Would hiveminds count?

Should they?

The relationship between hiveminds and multiplicity is complicated to say the least.

There's a post here that classifies hiveminds in terms of multiplicity...

The basic idea with this theory is that there are certain hiveminds made up of multiple distinct individuals with their own independent thoughts.

If the definition of plurality is having multiple people in one body, it could be argued that each of these bodies contains "multiple people" in it. This could technically be plural.

But then there are the "true hiveminds" where there is only one singular self that simply operates multiple bodies. These ones feel pretty clearly like a singlet to me.

So what do we think?

Frisk from Undertale & Kris from Deltarune are canonically plural

It's heavily implied in both games that protags do not control their actions or most of them during the story.

It's not that shown in Undertale and is mostly noticeable in Genocide run, where borders between player, Frisk & Chara are most shown.

While in Deltarune, c'mone, the scene in the end of 1st chapter & a lot more other small details that tell us "Kris & player are two separate identities" just exists😭

My Dungeon Meshi oc Zephyr (he/they) is canonically plural! I’ve wrote two stories for him so far: Protective (https://archiveofourown.org/works/58665499) and Peaceful (https://archiveofourown.org/works/58760923)! They were both part of Systember 2024 :]

His backstory is that he was a dungeon lord for a while and early on he fused himself with the soul of a white dragon, who formed into a headmate named Dragon (she/her). Zephyr didn’t know about Dragon until the two were in a life-or-death situation and Dragon fronted so she could save them. They were then found by the Canaries and forced to join and that’s what happens in the two stories I linked.

Zephyr and Dragon my little blorbos…

CHRISTIAN DEAN FROM ZEYN_SYRE ON YOUTUBE IS CANONICALLY PLURAL. (go check them out, by the way)

Allow me to explain

in the video "Natural," theres a scene where christian is about to take a blow before he seemingly zones out, and we see a view of 4 people that look like him in a way. They are even addressed with plural terms, saying things along these lines; "Im the host, I can handle it." "Host or not, they took your strengh, not ours." "I can handle it, im the protector after all." They even refer to them with different names, Christian is the host, "Dean" is the protector.

In another video labeled "Control," we get a scene where christian is faced with a stressful situation. He zones out and his ears start ringing and there are voices whispering to him, all while Micah is trying to get christian to focus on him. After a few moments, it cuts to chris snapping back into reality, and acting violent. At the end of the video, going along with the lyrics of the song, Zeyn asks christian "Who is in control?"

Another video labeled "who am I supposed to please?", we see these 4 versions of chris. Christian, Dean, and two others whos names are unknown. Also at the beginning of the video, Zeyn asks Christian "who are you."

Lastly, in a yt short labeled "Two," we get a clip of Ethan and Xander running away from Christian (whos wielding a gun), one of them yelling "NOT CHRISTIAN, DIPSHIT!"

and a smaller note, spread throughout other shorts we see small clips of Christian when he was younger being more violent, with a red glint in his eyes during this time, just like the unnamed aggressive version of christian that we see

You’re surprised by the animatronic horror monsters being good plural rep, which is fair, but counterpoint: they’re (excluding the most recent games as that’s not confirmed (yet?)) canonically just dead children. Some of them are angry, more of them are scared, some of them don’t even have the slightest clue what’s happening and are effectively trapped in an innerworld.

Are animatronic horror monsters logical plural rep? Nope. But the ghosts of dead children, unable to mentally age, trapped in their worst moments and stuck in bodies that aren’t their own, forced to mask as the body to not get hurt, and some of them are stuck in there with others? That’s pretty dang plural, and quite frankly pretty dang relatable, at least to our little/trauma holder.

That makes sense!

Also, just wanted to say that my main thing isn't about whether or not they were actual plural reps. Just find it interesting when plural systems connect so much with reps that could be so stigmatizing. There's a lot of plurality in horror and it feels like it plays up the idea of "multiple people in one body is something scary that you should be afraid of."

So it, on one hand, is pretty cool that so many plurals can see themselves in characters like these!

But it's also a bit sad that a lot of the reps we get end up being these types of characters which singlets will see and can make plurality seem scary to them.

I hope this isn't read as me not liking these type of submissions! I very much do! And I want to see all the canonically plural characters people want to share!

That said, I do hope is that our society can get to a point where plurality is less common as a horror trope. Where creators can make plural characters without relying on "look how scary this villain is! They have multiple people in one body, and at least one of them is EVIL and wants to kill people!"

I'm reminded a bit how it used to be common for villains to be queer-coded. Not canonically queer, perhaps, but playing in to a lot of queer stereotypes. And there's a similar relationship between these villains and the queer community, where queer people can see themselves in the villains which is a positive for them. But it's also a bit unfortunate when that's the main type of characters they can relate to.
