Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1964) • Self-Portrait • 1918 • Matisse Museum, Le Cateau-Cambresis, France

" There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted." – Henri Matisse

Ellen Emmet Rand (American, 1875 – 1941) • In the Studio • 1910

At first glance, this painting looks simply like a portrait of a young girl holding a cat. Look closer and you'll notice that it's also a self-portrait. The artist is seen in the background, reflected in the mirror.
