Girl never even considered for one second that Brooklyn could not be on her side, she trusted her completely, she was absolutely obsessed with her
Been thinking a lot about the differences in reactions to the Jurassic World trilogy compared to other rebooted franchises that update them by having women or a poc as the star. I haven’t been into Jurassic World for very long but as far as I can tell, things are NOWHERE near as bad as they are for lots of these franchises and I think a lot of that has to do with the marketing.
Chris Pratt as Owen Grady is front and centre on every poster and every piece of merch for the trilogy despite the fact that the literal writer/director of the trilogy has said that Claire Dearing is the main character. She’s the one with the backstory, an arc, complexities and struggles. Owen has none of these things - the only piece of backstory we have is that he was in the military… that’s it. And even then that’s only so he can be like a buff, almost invincible guy that can help Claire in her life endangering quests. He only exists to do whatever his girlfriend, adopted clone daughter or dinosaur daughter needs him to do.
I like to complain about how much Claire was chucked to the side in the marketing and treated like the love interest when SHE is the main character, but on the other hand I’m kind of glad that happened. It means there’s not as much bullshit flying around about it going ‘woke’.
I think the best thing to compare it to is Star Wars, which started with a new trilogy the same year that the Jurassic franchise did. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega were framed as the stars of the trilogy from the very beginning (even if Finn was later pushed to the side). Specifically Daisy Ridley was front and centre on the posters and merch and there was no pretending that this wasn’t HER story.
For example, the most commonly used posters - if you hadn’t seen these movies and were asked to guess the main character of both trilogies, you’d probably be able to for the sequels, but not Jurassic World
Now, is Rey and her trilogy written brilliantly? No, there’s many valid critiques to make of the sequels, but these actual flaws are not what people are, too this day, mad about. They’re mad that the franchise went ‘woke’ and put a woman front and centre. Compare this to Claire, where she and her trilogy are also not brilliantly written (although I still love her dearly) but the majority of the criticisms I see about Jurassic World are based around actual flaws in the movies, and I think this is because people can pretend that this is Owen’s story and not Claire’s. Her not being front and centre has sadly protected her and the trilogy in a way. And I wish it wasn’t like that, but I can’t say I’m not glad about the fact the trilogy was able to avoid this.
Misogyny is why Claire was not front and centre in the marketing (putting Owen front and centre was the best way to sell the franchise, even if he wasn’t the main character) but in a strange way it also seemed to protect Bryce Dallas Howard from the misogyny that many of her contemporaries have faced during the era of ‘progressive’ reboots.
(Again, I only watched the Jurassic franchise very recently and this kind of hatred could have been around while the Jurassic World trilogy was still coming out, but from what I’ve observed it seems nowhere near as bad as it is with other franchises)
Already obsessed with misadventures Lizzie. She’s still only on level 3, she has beef with an npc, her tactic for furnishing her house was just visiting her neighbours looking as sad and pathetic as possible in the hopes they would just give her things (it didn’t really work), but she is also creator and god of this universe and she will run around telling a bunch of animals that by tomorrow they’ll be dead and their world will be gone because their use will come to an end
