Shauna making Nat butcher Ben is so so important to me. No doubt she’s majorly fucked in the head but she Desperately needs someone to understand just a piece of her pain. And being The Butcher is a part of that.
No one except Travis has experienced the weight of loss she has and even he isn’t fighting the brain chemicals of postnatal issues (which can go on indefinitely).
She’s punishing Nat by forcing her to experience one piece of what’s caused all her pain. She had to carve Javi alone. No one else had to see the work between a boy and meat and his heart was the only piece to even look human at the end. Yes Nats in a very fragile place and she will not cope with having to do this but Shauna’s thought is that she had to do it so Natalie should see what it takes to be on the other side of decisions and it’s selfish and wrong but I don’t think Shauna’s brain can really understand that. She just wants someone to understand a piece of her pain and that comes out by making Nat suffer to.
But as the new leader she’s going to have to face Nats suffering of baring the weight of the crown of making the difficult decisions for Everyone. Having to think ahead of the moment because Shauna’s living in the past she can’t see through her own pain and anger. How can she rationally react to the outsiders who saw their cannibal rituals or prepare the camp for winter. She’s only been reacting to the present moment not thinking ahead which Natalie has always done.
