Change the way you think about art and artists

This post is mostly directed towards the people like me who don’t really do much, if anything, in the way of art of any sort.

People who aren’t artists so often consider artistic talent as something natural, a skill that you just have. However, it’s important to recognise that this simply isn’t true (well, apart from maybe in some freak cases). Behind every amazing piece of art,  every beautiful drawing and captivating painting, there is indeed a wealth of artistic talent. But that talent isn’t something the artist was born with.

Artistic talent is worked on. Grown. Developed. Learnt. Artistic talent is gained through hard work and consistent effort. Every artist has slaved away at doing what they do to get where they are, slowly improving over time. And this effort never stops. Artists continue to grow and develop what they’re capable of, always seeking to improve what they do.

So stop seeing artistic talent as something people just have. See it as something that is worked for. See the effort behind every line, every splash of colour. Trust me, when you do that, you only appreciate the art even more than you did already, because you can see what it’s taken for that piece to exist.

And maybe you’ll start to treat the artists with more respect, too.
