Suddenly "free to race" doesn't seem to please that crowd
I'm just so tired of the hypocrisy, if anything. Last year, when Lando was in a position to fight for the WDC (even if it was not a reasonable challenge,imo) week to week the entire F1 community was screaming and crying at the thought of team orders. Everyone agreed that points, podiums and wins should be achieved on merit, and not with the help of a teammate. Hell, even this year there was constant discussion about the team orders McLaren told their drivers to hold position back in Australia for four laps while their drivers were passing backmarkers in a wet track, on a rainy day, where there were multiple DNFs. Yet suddenly, everyone thinks that Mclaren should have made Lando give up his second place to Oscar, because he got within his DRS and said that he was faster on the radio.

Piastri asking for a swap so he can go get max. There are people saying he could have gone and got max but he was behind Lando even with DRS the whole race. Lando didn’t have DRS and was protecting his tyres and Piastri still didn’t/couldn’t overtake or even get close enough to set up for wheel to wheel. So how would Piastri gain on Max? Piastri was asking repeatedly on the radio and Lando was not aware as his (incompetent) race engineer (to the point he had to ask him for suggestions re:hairpin) and barely spoke to him the last 20 laps (plus WJ’s obsession with imaginary rain). It’s very telling how Piastri seems to expect this now probably due to him being repeatedly coddled and given advantages and race wins. Even today he was given an advantage by the undercut.

I'm going to just say it — if at any point at the BEGINNING of a season, Lando and his fans were begging for team orders in the SWAP POSITION flavor, F1 fans would be hunting all of us for sport. Yet Oscar and his fans have done that in 2 of the first 3 opening races and it's viewed as "championship mentality?" He was never team ordered not to fight Lando, he was merely told they weren't swapping the positions. If he couldn't pass Lando, he wasn't passing Max. And I fear his shitty attitude towards playing the team game thus far is why the team wouldn't even entertain the thought of "Let him by to have a go at Max then give back the position at the end if he can't overtake him" strategy that Oscar stans seem to think they should have. Nah, dude. No team with any common sense is going to do that with a driver who regularly threw tantrums over the mere prospect of having to play the team game the entire second half of last year.

i love how lando was able to discuss the race straight out of the car in the most mature and measured way possible, like he's obviously a bit disappointed, but his energy is not in any way dejected or resentful about it. he knows he did the best he could, and max simply didn't make mistakes. you have to appreciate a master at work, you know? so lando obviously respects the skill of max, and accepts that racing is racing, even grinning about it, happy to be racing against the best, against someone who wouldn't give him an inch. so like yes he didn't win, but max is max is max, you just can't do anything against that force of nature <3
