!!! okay so the truth is that i used to be SO intimidated by comments, not because i didn't enjoy the very kind feedback, but because i really wanted to communicate the depth of my appreciation in a way that was equivalent to how they made me feel, and that always felt impossible. but over time i worked out a script for answering people (the same way i do irl LMFAO) that i now use every time because it makes my life so much easier
for short comments that don't ask questions or remark very much on the story itself: a simple thank you + some kind of followup about how you're happy they liked the story, you're so flattered, etc (or sometimes just heart emojis if that's what the comment entails)
for medium-length comments that contain more particulars: pick one or two of what they've picked out and riff on it like you would with a friend, followed up by thanking them
for very long comments with a lot of questions or commentary: same method as medium, but this time don't be afraid to go into depth! take this as an opportunity to infodump about your work - how you wanted people to feel when they read such & such, your intentions for characterization, your craft! most people who are willing to break the character limit in ao3 will be delighted that you've spilled your guts in kind. and from the commenter's perspective, it's so much fun to get a glimpse behind a writer's curtain, and it's never annoying or overwhelming
and beyond all this, my number one tip would be to match their energy! this can sometimes be difficult for very long, effusive comments, which is why i occasionally take weeks to respond to those (sorry!!) but it's really just because i want to give them the measured, thoughtful response they deserve. i love each and every one of you who've commented on my work and i will always reply to you eventually :] <3
