Day #124 - How I Draw Dedede

I've never really given drawing advice or anything before and my process is pretty terrible but I'll try my best!

The first and most obvious thing to note when drawing Dedede is his design is very fluid. He changes appearance CONSTANTLY so pick and choose from whatever aspects you like. My Dedede is pretty clearly very RTDL Deluxe influenced but with a bit pulled from Smash and his classic Adventure design.

When drawing Dedede, I usually start with a sort of snowman shape? I draw a wide egg for his body and then a smaller circle at the top for his head, with the highest point of the egg-shape intercepting the circle nearly half way.

I then draw his arms and feet because that will help with shaping his coat. The way I draw him makes his arms a lot more flipper esque usually. I draw his little feet connecting to his body almost right below his arms.

The fur of his coat rides up from his shoulders to the back of his head. His arms help shape it out. The fur rests on the floor, curving around his feet. This is honestly probably the hardest part of drawing Dedede for me? I struggle a lot with figuring out how to get his arms and coat right. Messing it up can lead to him looking oddly thin which... honestly kinda happened here. I'm bad at this lol

I use the area where the body-shape and head-shape connect to form his eyes and beak. I usually draw his eyes first because I find it helps with getting the corners of his beak right, but I also often draw the beak first. Both work!

His beak kinda has these semicircle shapes on the left and right corner that then slope up to his eyes and meet in that center point. The bottom line from the initial head shape helps form the curve of his beak's bottom half. (It's important to note that his head and body aren't actually separated and if any bits of the initial head shape go past the beak they should usually be erased.)

The default smile expression I most often draw is a sort of kitty grin type thing? It's based on his Kirby's Adventure artwork and some expressions he makes in RTDL DX.

For the brim of his crown, I start from the top of his eyes and just draw a curved line across his head. The top of the original sphere then makes the top of the crown, and then I add the egg-shaped center in-between his eyes. The shape of this bit changes a lot in thickness and stuff so go with whatever you prefer. One thing I will note though is in 64 and the 3DS games it makes almost a diamond shape which can help exaggerate grumpy expressions.

Now it's time for the top, red piece of the crown! This bits easy cause I just draw it peaking where the egg-shaped piece of the brim peaks. I exaggerate his pompom into this huge puffy mess all the time... I think it's fun. For a more accurate style just make it a smaller ball, obviously. (Or the spiky one from 64.)

Then it's time for his under-outfit... nothing much of note here other than remember to cross his kimono the right way if you give him one!

And finally, when you go to color him, remember to get his obi right! Red triangles point up, yellow point down.

When drawing him from other angles, I often give him more of a bean shape but it still uses a similar snowman-shape as a base.

You also might find it easier to draw the fur on his coat before his arms. I think I draw arm first & fur first just as often as each other.

And here's some random beak expressions?? I dunno.

Finally, I'd recommend checking out this!
