I'm legitimately considering making a social media platform where you can only post PDFs.

Would you use this, and how much would you be willing to spend per year on it (i.e. $0.10)? Please answer these questions in the tags.

Notes:

  • It would be paid; I don't know any good ways to make something like this free, except (potentially) a non-profit. Being paid also slows bots and crawlers.
  • I don't like the idea of it being federated. That's non-pdf content right there!
  • You would have a variety of customization. For example, putting a PDF as the background image of your profile page.

Nobody (else) is dumb enough to actually do this, so I'm putting my idea out here.

I don't wanna be cynical about this (esp since i think i've mentioned this idea before but idk (i will at least refrain from making the tumblr next pdf joke again)) but for myself i have concerns,

  • I'm not inclined to pay for a service like this, not necessarily for financial reasons but primarily for privacy/opsec ones.
  • Creating and uploading pdfs takes too much time for regular posting
  • considering the above & quite possibly limited amount of people who stay after the novelty has worn off, I don't know if enough would happen on the platform to make me come back to it (regularly)
  • Being paid also slows bots and crawlers Is everything behind a paywall? Then I wouldn't join out of principle
  • You'd have to figure out moderation which probably requires novel techniques

Of course these can all be addressed & won't keep other people from using it so don't let me stop you
