The sound of pen scribbling filled the small office space. Sniffles and shallow sighs briefly interrupted the silence that engulfed the room.
The girl looked up from her journal, “Yes, Dot?”
“Come take a look at this, will you?” Y/n pushed her glasses up on the bridge of her nose before getting up from her seat. Y/n worked at the Temps Commission as a desk agent. Her days were filled with paperwork and watching people screw up the timeline day in and day out. Dot was her friend at the commission, someone she felt she could confide in when it came to the latest workplace gossip.
“You remember that one anomaly The Handler told me to keep an eye on?” Y/n nodded as she stood behind Dot’s desk. Dot began to explain the things she recorded over the years. “I thought this was a man that just survived the apocalypse, but look,” Dot showed a photo of a boy dressed in arctic wear, but his face was visible. Y/n took a look at the photo, examining the boy in the photo.
The girl did not know what clicked in her brain, but something shifted, and she wanted to figure out who he was, “Do you have any other information on him?”
“Nothing really, he was only discovered a couple of days ago, everything is still fresh.”
Y/n nodded in understanding, “Keep me posted.”
Dot nodded. Y/n retreated back to her desk, but she found herself not able to focus. Something about the boy’s face caused her mind to wander.
She tried to get work done, but all she could think about was the boy from the photo. There was something about him that sparked her interest, and she did not know why. With a sigh of boredom, Y/n rubbed her face and continued with her work. The woman continued to type away at her typewriter as she filled out the report for the field agent she was working on.
“Charles?” Y/n held up a small stack of papers that were neatly organized. “Here are those files you needed. I organized them all, so go over them and tell me if they need to be changed.”
Charles smiled as he took the papers, giving them a short skim. “Perfect as always, Y/n,” He praised. “Thank you, I’ll get these over to Prudence ASAP.”
After years of grueling paperwork and office meetings, Y/n had found herself completely immersed in the case Dot was assigned. She had learned that the boy’s name was Five Hargreeves and he had survived the apocalypse in 2019. Y/n did not know how, but she figured it was dumb luck. As the days went by she continued to learn more about the boy and his circumstances. She was beyond ecstatic when Dot told her that The Handler was willing to go out and make him a part of the Commission team. She rarely interacted with the boy but always kept an eye out for him as much as she could.
“Did you hear?” Y/n turned to Dot as they walked the halls of the commission. “Five is climbing the ranks of our field agents.”
Y/n listened to Dot tell her about their upcoming field agent. “He seems to be doing well.” Y/n praised, “He’s only been here for a couple of years and he’s managed to climb so high in the ranks.”
She continued. “You think Harvey is angry his spot is being taken? I mean, I know I would.” Dot nodded in agreement. The two walked through the halls to the cafeteria.
Y/n let out a yawn as she looked around trying to figure out what she wanted to eat, “I think I’m gonna go get some coffee.”
“But it’s your fourth one of the day.” Dot said in a worried tone. Y/n shrugged as she walked off to the coffee bar.
“One more won’t hurt.” The woman grabbed a cup from the large stack that were displayed on the table. Her brain was on autopilot as she made her fifth cup of coffee; she barely even noticed the person who had begun to get a cup of coffee beside her. Y/n looked up and noticed a man dressed in a suit was grabbing a cup of coffee, ”Hello, Mister Hargreeves.”
The man looked up from his cup. “Hello, Y/n.”
“How’s the field?” The woman asked trying to build small talk with the commission celebrity.
“You know…” He started as he placed a lid on his coffee, “Busy, bloody, the usual.”
Y/n nodded. She had finished making her cup and Five had seemed to finish making his despite not adding any sweeteners or cream to his cup.
“See you around.” The man said as he walked off with his cup of artificial fuel.
Y/n watched as he walked off, mentally boggled. She just spoke to the Commission’s best field agent, and he knew her name. ‘Dot is going to lose it.’ She thought.
‘So that’s what happened…’ Y/n thought as she read over the file of Mr. Hargreeves. One of the many perks Y/n found about her job was that she had access to files many people did not. She wanted to learn more about Five and see what exactly was up with him. She learned he was not just some kid with dumb luck, he actually had shitty luck; he just had a second chance at things to make them right. Y/n continued to learn more about the boy, subtly pressing Dot for information on him, reading up on his file, and even going so far as to search for files that had to do with him.
“Y/n what are you doing?”
Y/n froze in fear as she realized she had been caught going through files in the file room. Y/n turned around and was met with a woman in a fashionable outfit with red heels.
“Oh! Hello, Handler.” The woman greeted nervously, “It’s good to see you.”
“What are you doing, Y/n?” The Handler wasted no time trying to get to the bottom of the woman’s antics. Y/n showcased an awkward grin.
“I needed to grab a file, and since I was coming down here Dot asked me to go ahead and grab one for her as well.” Y/n lied through her teeth.
The handler nodded, suspicion oozing from her facial expression as she looked at the woman. “Well…” The handler started. “We may have all the time in the world, but that doesn’t mean we should be wasting it, now should we?”
Y/n nodded and closed the file cabinet with her hip and walked off. She had a small pep in her step, eager to get the Handler off her tail. ‘That was close…’ she thought as she made it into the clear. She looked down at her hands and realized why she had even gone into the file room in the first place.
A grin plagued the woman’s lips as she ran her finger along the manila folder that held information about Five Hargreeves.
“Good thing I finished my follow-ups today, now I have time to read all about you,” She mumbled to herself as she walked back to her desk file in hand.
As the years passed Y/n had still kept an eye for the highly acclaimed assassin. She began to notice weird behaviors he was showing, and he always seemed to be muttering to himself and jotting things in a book. If Y/n had not known about him before, she’d almost think he was a crazy person.
“Looks like he’s going through one of his “episodes” again,” Y/n turned away from her colleague and watched Five mutter to himself as she did. The girl chuckled to herself as she watched the man walk by. “What do you think he’s obsessing over this time?”
Y/n took a sip of her coffee and shrugged, “Couldn’t tell you.”
Y/n knew exactly what the man was fixated on. She had watched him and picked up things that he would do as well as having the fortunate event of bumping into him on her way to her cubical.
The man had been writing in a journal, from what Y/n thought, as she was skimming through a folder that contained new details for one of the anomalies she had been assigned to.
As papers scattered all over the floor, Five had dropped his book. The man was not a monster; he helped Y/n pick up her papers trying to organize them as best as he could, almost forgetting about his journal until Y/n picked it up. The woman noticed all the writing and saw something that caught her eye.
“Dropped this,” She handed Five his journal back and the man handed her the rest of her papers back. “Sorry,” Was all he said before walking off, leaving the woman to her own devices.
She looked down at her hands to realize she was now holding an array of unorganized papers. “Shit.” She groaned as she finished her walk to her cubical. As she tossed her stack of messy papers and plopped down at her rundown swivel chair, Dot was quick to notice her friend’s attitude.
“Five, Happened.” Dot quirked an eyebrow, “He had his nose in that stupid journal he’s always writing in and bumped into me and now this file is out of order and I have to reorganize it before I can even think about processing it.”
Y/n ranted as she sat up in her chair. “Looks like drinks are a no-go tonight,” The woman sighed now wishing she could have a drink at that moment
After a minute of self-pity, Y/n took a deep breath and sat up straight in her chair beginning on the mountain of work. If there was something that Y/n enjoyed, it was organization. She found that it cleared her mind and brightened her peace, but as she organized the papers, her mind was not clear; it was focused on what she had found in Five’s journal.
That lingered in her brain as she continued to work. What could be so important in that year? How was he even going to get there? She knew he could get caught using one of the briefcases for matters not pertaining to fieldwork.
She needed to figure out why that was so important to the man and what exactly he was going to do to get back to 2019. As the thoughts swirled her mind she almost felt as if she was putting a puzzle together and the pieces were not fitting. As the thoughts continued to fester in her consciousness it all came to a stop when she saw a glimpse of a purple dress.
Dot looked up as she was sitting down in her chair. “I need you to tell me everything you know about Five.” Dot’s eyes widened and then contorted into a confused expression.
“What do you wanna know?”
“Everything that you haven't already told me.”
Dot pursed her lips, “Is something wrong?”
Y/n felt herself growing impatient. She loved Dot with her whole heart and cherished her friend, but at times like these, she found the woman too curious and grew impatient, “Nothing is wrong I just want to know about him.”
Dot nodded, still keeping her confused and concerned expression. She began to list off everything she knew about the man from watching him from years when his file was open, “He’s really sensitive about his family though, I’ve tried to ask about them, but he always seems colder than normal when I bring them up.”
Y/n nodded taking in all of the information. She thought and filtered through everything Dot told her, trying to see what pieces of information fit the puzzle she found herself desperate to solve.
He wants to get back to 2019 to get back to his family, Y/n thought to herself.
“Thank you, Dot.” Dot stopped talking and smiled her signature smile, “You truly are the best.”
As time went on Y/n held onto the information Dot told her and even learned a few tidbits about him due to talking to the man herself during morning coffee, and for Five his afternoon and nightly coffee. The woman found herself not just growing fond of Five but also felt a sense of protectiveness over him. She knew that he was more than capable of taking care of himself, he proved it every day, but Y/n found herself sticking up for him and even figuring out equations in her spare time for Five so he could get back home sooner.
Five would return to work with a slip of paper on his desk that contained an equation he had been stumped on for days or weeks. It was perfectly solved and he had no idea who or where it came from. Five thought it was someone who was listening in on his daily ramblings, he now saw he had to be more careful and more tight-lipped about his plan.
He was so close, yet so far.
“What are you working on?”
Y/n jumped her seat, messing up the equation she was drawing out. Y/n turned to her side to see Five holding a cup of coffee. Y/n’s demeanor lightened as she realized it was only Five. The woman stopped her writing and took a sip of her now lukewarm coffee.
Y/n cursed herself out as she realized she was writing an equation that Five needed. She had planned on dropping it off later in the day so it would not get noticed, but she was now at risk of getting caught.
“Dot needed me to work on this equation for her. It was a doozy.” The woman lied through her teeth.
Five looked at the equation she had written her journal. It had a stray mark from where she was startled and her neat handwriting was so clear to read Five was impressed. “Well I don't want to bother you, So see you later for coffee?”
Y/n nodded. “You’ll have coffee and I’ll have dinner.”
Five waved one more time before leaving the woman to her own doings. Y/n let out a sigh she was holding in. He did not suspect anything, and she was in the clear. She continued to write out and solve the equation until she was finished.
She sighed in contentment, looking over her work. She grabbed her journal, ripped the paper out of it, and dumped her now cold coffee in the waste bin before leaving off to Five’s office. She snuck her way to his office careful to not run into him. She placed the paper on his desk and left as quickly as she could, she was almost in the clear until she bumped into someone.
The woman looked up to see the person she was trying to avoid.
“Funny, I was just going to put my stuff down and go to the cafeteria.” Five told her.
“Here let me go to my desk and put my coat away, come with me.” Y/n was going to try and make up a lie, but it was already too late. She followed the man to his desk, feeling her stomach churn in anxiety.
Five put his coat in his cubical but noticed the slip of paper on his desk. He picked it up and read it; it was another equation he needed. He continued to analyze it and realized the smudge in the equation and the prestige handwriting, “How did you solve this?”
“How did you solve the equation?” Y/n did not know what to say to the man, “You knew about my plan, didn’t you?”
Y/n sighed. “I figured it out.”
Five looked at her now realizing all of the times he was coincidentally helped it was Y/n who did it.
“I’m going to assassinate Kennedy.” Y/n’s eyes widened, “I want you to go with me.”
