Q: how many #vintage #DeluxeReverb #amps can one #guitarshop have in stock?. . A: three (duh). . Here are 3 #Fender DRs spotted a @capsulemusic #Toronto on the weekend. . Pic 1 shows a 1965 model, all original except for the reverb tank. This one is in clean condition and is the most expensive of the three. . Pic 2 shows a 1978 DR that has been quite literally given the ol’ “#blackface mod” right down to the faceplate and grill cloth. A really affordable alternative if you don’t want to pay the big bucks that an original blackface Deluxe Reverb commands. . Pic 3 shows another 1965 model. This one is priced between the ‘78 and the ‘65 in pic 1 - it’s more affordable largely due to the beat up condition of the Tolex. But as my friend @gianni_gcp has wisely said “tone doesn’t come from Tolex!” . There was a transitional period before they completely switched to black Tolex where you could get a black faceplate with smooth white Tolex and a wheat grill! #TurtleTuesday 🐢 Here's Ric, my stuffed #turtle sitting on my recently acquired 1963 #Fender #Princeton (which is sitting on the very clever tabletop #ampstand by @atlasstands). This little guy (the Princeton, not Ric) is going to have to move over some when the new #Marshall hardware arrives later this week... 😁 But seriously, I can't recommend a #vintage #blackface Princeton (the non-reverb model) enough. They are cheaper than the more popular #PrincetonReverb model, and the 10" speaker in a decent sized box makes it sound bigger than it actually is, and the output power (12 watts) is more than enough for general use - don't try and play any of your stadium gigs with it, but if you are rehearsing, playing at home, or in a small nightclub, it's just right. PS: Ric likes to sit up there on top because he says the vibrations from the amp make him feel "all funny down there" (his words, not mine...). I haven't done a #LesPaul Special in front of 3 #vintage #amps in a while... 😁 2009 #Gibson Custom '60 #LesPaulSpecial TV #VOS Amps stands and pedalboard by @atlasstands. The #amplifiers are by the "#Fender Electric Instrument Co", which tells me they all predate mid-1965, when the faceplates began to read "Fender Musical Instruments". A quick way to approximately date a #blackface #fenderamp: if it says "Fender Electric Instrument Co.", it was made sometime between late 1963 and the summer of 1965. If it says "Fender Musical Instruments" it was made sometime after June-ish of 1965. If you want to date a Fender amp more precisely, look at the date codes on the transformers. Also find the two letter code on the tube chart in the back. The first letter tells you the year, and the second tells you the month. Google "Fender amp tube chart date codes" and there are several websites that will tell you what year and month each two letter code signifies. So there you go. A #blackface and a #tweed. ('64 #Fender #Champ & '63 #DeluxeReverb). Yes, I said tweed! Sure it's not *covered* in tweed...but it is still a Fender #5F1 Champ, unchanged from the #narrowpanel tweed #amp period of the late 50s. When Fender updated every other amp in their lineup, they totally ignored the poor little Champ. It stayed exactly the same for the following several years. But things got totally embarrassing by 1964. So even though the redesigned, front-control-panel blackface Champ was still a year away Fender FINALLY did SOMETHING and changed the covering from tweed to black #tolex in '64. But like the tweed version, it still has the same control ("control" singular...there is only a volume knob.
