we learn to keep track of the weapon in our hand

Like a lot of people I have a tendency when thinking about systemic bigotry and abuse to look to who materially benefits from the subjugation of its targets. And it is a useful corrective to remember that historically (and in many parts of the world today!) left-handed people—a minority it is trivially easy and straightforwardly socially useful to accommodate in daily life—have been subjected to abusive “handedness conversion therapy” as children, inflicting permanent neurological damage, for no discernible reason beyond that they use their upper limbs and digits weird

I genuinely believe that the new SW trilogy wouldn’t have flopped out into irrelevance like it did if they hadn’t dumped Finn on the side of the freeway like a new pet rabbit the week after easter

Well, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.

Cuckoo chick pushing warbler eggs out of a nest By: E. A. Janes From: Natural History Magazine 1989

i love getting exposure to misc fetishes that im not into because imo it's really interesting to see what the invented scenarios, art pieces, stories, etc reveal about the primary concerns of the fetish-holder, like the specific traits that are necessary to make the fetish "work"

like as an example, one would expect the bimbo fetish to exclusively involve the "bimbo" characters being uhh Universally Uninformed, but there are novels & comics etc that depict like.... Bimbo Scientists. but the Bimbo Scientists' projects are like "how can i make my boobs bigger" "how can i invent a really attractive man" etc. it casts the fetish in this really fascinating light--like, the character *can* be Conventionally Smart, as long as she uses her education for like vapid & trivial ends, which forms this really interesting like Reconfiguration of the conventional images & signifiers of "un/intelligence", like as if to say that for at least some adherents of that fetish, the values & concerns conventionally associated with Foolishness & Vacuity are more weighted than the actual primary traits associated with smartness

I think what I love most about mythology is that the “Trickster God/Spirit” is an archetypical character found in almost every body of folklore. It’s like “Oh, here’s our God of the Sun, our God of the Sea, our God of Fertility, and our God of Being A Wretched Little Gremlin Who Causes Problems On Purpose”

it's pseudo-historical fiction set in a made up version of 1880s-1920s eurasia examining the development of imperialism in this era + industrialization + the rise of communism. this is done primarily through the lens of a boy who was born a literal bear and violently forced into the role of a human prince of one of the imperial powers as part of the colonization of his homeland, is woefully mistreated by everyone and used as a pawn and so he becomes a class traitor (positive) and joins the revolution in his homeland and then marries this world's version of lenin who is a mongolian trans woman who can form soul bonds with animals & merge consciousness with them 🫶🏼 its both an examination of these various historical-material forces and a love story at its heart

they are lifelong friends and her story weaves in and out of his until finally coming together as they transition from being revolutionaries to building a socialist state, and i'm exploring how as they fall in love and their senses of self tangle and merge the limited third person pov expands to include her awareness. in this version of the world my "lenin" (she is not literally lenin, i'm taking inspiration from several historical figures for her, but her role in the history of this world is effectively that of lenin) lives far longer than 1924

the main regions/locations of focus are the eurasian steppe, the ottoman empire, and the british empire, with the russian empire and late qing china/warlord era roc as peripheries - albeit fantasy equivalents of all of the above as i'm taking liberties with some things lol. but i have been doing a lot of historical research on all of the above and having a great time with it. in this version of the world the first socialist state is not in russia but elsewhere in the steppe, and so i'm examining the material conditions that could have caused that to happen and forming the world around that + playing with the political economies of these made up countries

some things i'm exploring through the main characters' personal narratives issues like gender and sexuality including intersexism, class struggle and the role of the state in revolution and what is required not only to start a communist revolution but to maintain it against counter-revolutionary forces, the collapse of monarchism and how the world reached the crisis of imperialism that was ww1, anti-communist nationalism in the early 20th century, childhood abuse and the manufactured powerlessness of childhood as an allegory for being an imperialized subject, imperial and class collaboration vs resistance, and a bunch of other things. it spans 40 years of their lives so there's a lot to cover and many 'periods' of their lives

the world is heavily set in reality with only minor fantastical elements that fly under the radar, like the main character having been born a bear is not really the point of the story but exists to aid the themes. in this world the fact that sometimes animals can turn into humans and humans can share consciousness with other forms of life exists very much in the background. a lot of the story is focused on character development and the personal relationships between characters, set while all of the above is happening. balancing all of this and writing it in a way that the entire thing doesn't feel like a fever dream or a textbook is my ongoing struggle that i am sincerely enjoying

shipping isn’t about what the writers or actors say is or isn’t romantic. shipping isn’t even about romance a good percentage of the time. shipping is about seeing The Dynamic and going absolutely hog wild in your mind and your friends dms about it.

A recurring theme in late medieval literature is stories which are ostensibly tales of King Arthur or Robin Hood or some other popular or legendary figure, except in practice the narrative mostly concerns the tribulations of wholly original characters, with the figure the story is purportedly about appearing only briefly, often in a peripheral or supporting role, essentially as an excuse to use that figure's mythos as a framing device for original fiction.

You occasionally bump into a similar conceit in contemporary fan-media, but I have to wonder how widespread the device would be if it weren't for the warping influence of copyright on popular culture. Imagine if there was an entire body of respectable mainstream fiction, spanning a wide range of genres and mediums, unified solely by the fact that somewhere in the middle Batman shows up.

saying that the people who trad publish reskinned fanfic are “too weird” has to be one of the critiques most disconnected from reality that i have ever seen… everybody hates that shit PRECISELY BECAUSE it’s been whitewashed and mashed into a paste by the publishing industry and then extruded from it like toothpaste

“shitty no plot cishet hate to love enemies to lovers reylo fanfic” is the peak of normie. the absolute pinnacle. that was half the romance section even before the star wars sequel trilogy. like what the FUCK are you talking about
