David Fincher is directing a sequel to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” with Quentin Tarantino writing the follow-up to his Oscar-winning epic at Netflix, where Fincher has a first-look deal. Brad Pitt will reprise his role as stuntman and potential wife-killer Cliff Booth.

It’s an especially unique production — not only because a high-profile director is helming a sequel to another high-profile director’s film, but also because of the property’s shift from a theatrical studio to a streamer. (The shift is especially pertinent as news of the project emerged during the movie theater industry’s annual weeklong gathering at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.) “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was released by Sony Pictures in 2019, but Tarantino negotiated a deal that would return him ownership of the film’s underlying copyright after a number of years. Since this follow-up is being set up under Fincher’s first-look deal at Netflix, that likely indicates that sequel rights may already be privately retained by Tarantino.

The project comes together after Tarantino scrapped plans for what would’ve been his 10th (and allegedly final) feature, “The Movie Critic.” A script had been written and Brad Pitt had been cast in the lead role. The story was said to take place in the ’70s and follow a film critic who wrote for a porn magazine. It had been rumored that Pitt would be playing some version of his “Once Upon a Time” character Cliff Booth, who in Tarantino’s novelization of his own feature was revealed to be quite the movie buff.

Now, Pitt will officially reprise the role, which won him an Oscar for supporting actor. The project reunites Pitt with Fincher, who have each made some of their most acclaimed films together: the seminal thriller “Se7en,” cult satire “Fight Club” and Oscar darling “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” It seems less likely that Leonardo DiCaprio or Margot Robbie would reprise their roles for the sequel.

‘John Wick’ Animated Prequel Film in the Works at Lionsgate.

The untitled animated feature will flash back to before the events of the first “John Wick” movie from 2014 and will look at how Wick worked to complete the fabled “Impossible Task” that has been teased in the franchise. It will depict the ordeal that required Wick to kill all of his rivals in one night, a task that won him his freedom from his obligation to the High Table and let him live with the love of his life, Helen.

Keanu Reeves, who has played Wick in all four live-action features and the upcoming “Ballerina,” is expected to return to voice his signature character.

The film is directed by Shannon Tindle, who directed Annie Award-nominated “Ultraman: Rising” for Netflix last year. Tindle’s also an animator who has worked on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” “Coraline,” and “Megamind” and served as an executive producer and showrunner on the Emmy-winning series “Lost Ollie.”

Vanessa Taylor, a writer on “Game of Thrones” who also wrote the screenplay for the Best Picture winner “The Shape of Water” and films like “Divergent,” “Uglies,” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” will write the script for the animated John Wick film.

The producing teams that have shepherded the entire franchise are all back for the animated project, including Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski, and Reeves himself. 87Eleven Entertainment’s Alex Young and Jason Spitz will executive produce.

Donnie Yen has been set to direct Lionsgate’s standalone film centered on Caine, the blind assassin he played in John Wick: Chapter 4. As previously announced, Yen will also reprise his role as Caine in the English-language project which is billed as a Hong Kong-style action thriller. Production is due to begin in late 2025.

Mattson Tomlin, writer of the upcoming The Batman Part II and the adaptation of the Keanu Reeves-created comic book BRZRKR, has joined to write the film. The previous draft of the screenplay of the new film was written by Robert Askins.

The as-yet untitled film’s logline is being kept under wraps, but will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.

The film will be produced by franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (John Wick: Chapters 1 through 4BallerinaMonkey Man) through their Thunder Road shingle, and by Chad Stahelski (John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, Day Shift, John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina), who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner. Yen will also serve as an executive producer.
