Character lore under the cut!

Samwise Gamgee is the ultimate icon for friends of people with disability imo. I can't take your arthritis for the day, but I can walk behind you up the stairs and make your coffee. I can't take your adhd while you're working on this assignment, but I can help you stay on task. I can't take your depression upon myself for a bit, but I can come over to your house and help clean your room and listen to you. No, I can't absorb some of your memory loss issues, but I can remind you of things and save you a seat when you're running late. Yes, I know it's a lot, and yes, I know it's a heavy burden to bear, and no, I can't carry it for you. But I can carry you.
Once again thinking about the βTolkien elves are physically superior to humans in every wayβ thing as a disability parallel
Tolkien really said: a group of people are born with bodies that are weaker, slower, less dexterous, more breakable. They can't do many things that others take for granted. Their bodies are vulnerable and fall to wounds and illnesses that the other group is baffled by. They are physically less able and there are barriers that they will never be able to overcome. They have no magic powers to make up for this difference; they just live with it. Their lives are shorter and they will die earlier.
Still they are heroes, lovers, craftsmen, villains, musicians, warriors, poets, adventurers. Still their existences matter. They are essential parts of the universe. Their lives are meaningful and worthy of honour, however brief they may be.
[Transcript: a reply to this post that says "I love reading LOTR takes from people whoβve never read the books #the elves are angels darling he was catholic and people are just people #I think if you're looking for that analogy you might have better luck with the hobbits #still not there tho"]
Words cannot possibly explain how funny this is as a Silmarillion fan
Dare I ask Maglor.....
hi hi anon!
Substance use and diagnosis head canons for Maglor :)
i think basically all the Silmarillion characters are diagnosable with a trauma disorder or two, so assume thereβs background PTSD.
my deep belief is that (even in Tirion!) heβs got some ways of thinking and tendencies that in the modern world would be diagnosable as OCD. deep down he feels he needs his rituals, usually fairly subtle ones, in order to keep himself and his people safe. a lot of this is mental efforts; thinking specifically βgoodβ thoughts about his father, including specific chord progressions in morning songs, etc. what his thoughts are like changes depending on setting. in tirion his fears and rituals are mostly centered around success, though as conflict escalates this changes. in amon ereb he is compulsively precise about Maedhros, with the belief that is he, say, lays Maedhrosβ food on the wrong side of the plate his brother will have a fit of madness. he braids words of protection into maedhrosβ hair.
substance use: this guy has tried everything he had access to! in his youth he partook often and with great satisfaction in hallucinogenic mushrooms. as life got worse he began to drink, more heavily than he really noticed; by the kidnapping of the twins he certainly had an issue. heβs a quiet, sleepy drunk, and often drank before bed.
during his wandering he largely abandoned drinking and returned to shrooms.
heβs always happy to smoke as a social thing but doesnβt do it alone
when youβre rΓΊmil of tirion and the tiny prince of the noldor keeps barging into your house to Yell About Orthography so finally you give up and make him some tea
[Image description: black and white art of RΓΊmil and young FΓ«anor having tea together. RΓΊmil is sitting in a wheelchair with a cup of tea in his hand, smiling slightly. FΓ«anor sits opposite him, cross-legged in the chair. He is a child/young teenager. He is talking passionately and gesturing with tea in one hand which is spilling out of the cup.]

"'But I shall leave you only with Sador, and blind Ragnir, and the old women,' said TΓΊrin. 'Did not my father say that I am the heir of Hador? The heir should stay in Hador's house to defend it. [ID: an edit comprised of four posters in shades of brown, white, and grey.
1: Two brown circular frames connected by a rectangle in the center. The upper left shows Rudy Harding, an older barbadian model with dark brown skin, a shaved head, and a white beard. He wears a black, high-collared shirt and looks down seriously at the viewer. The bottom right circle contains an image of woodworking tools. The background is a black and white photograph of a plain and snowy mountains. The part of the background in the rectangular frame is in color. Vertical brown and cream-colored text on the right side of the rectangle reads "sador" / 2: A black and white image of a small building made of stone and thatch, amid mountains. A brown frame surrounds the picture, and brown and cream text on a semi-transparent white rectangle reads "Sador had been a woodman, and by ill-luck or the mishandling of his axe he had hewn his right foot, and the footless leg had shrunken. He worked in the outbuildings, to make or mend things of little worth that were needed in the house, for he had some skill in the working of wood." The text is framed by large quotation marks / 3: Same format as Image 2, but the background shows a clearing in a coniferous forest, and the text reads "His blind eye making him an indifferent woodman, Ragnir turned instead to the arts of healing and the cultivation of herbs and remedies. He took joy in this work, wherein he had great skill, and his nursing is thought to have delivered many from the foul breath of Angband." / 4: Same format as Image 1, but the upper left circle shows hanging bunches of herbs, and the lower right frames Fikayo Ifarajimi, a nigerian model with dark brown skin and dark hair in short twists. He has some stubble on his face, and one of his eyes is cloudy white. He looks seriously at the viewer, turned slightly to the right. The background shows the wooded shores of a lake, with one tree higher than the rest //End ID]
