The Shmoo

Created by Al Capp and first appearing int he comic strip, Lil’ Abner, a Shmoo is a cuddly fantastical creature that desires nothing more than to be a boon to all of humanity.  They can be whatever one might desire and are the metaphorical representation of the limitless bounty of the Earth in all its richness.

In the comics, the Shmoo are plentiful and reproduced so prodigiously as to threatened capitalist economies.  In its animated form, however, The Shmoo is a singular being that share adventures alongside Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble in the 1979 cartoon series Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo.  Later that year, Hanna-Barbera produced The New Shmoo, a Saturday Morning cartoon in which the Shmoo is a friendly bulbous creature who can stretch and shape his body into any form he wants.  The Shmoo uses this ability to help a group of teenage detective solve various mysteries.

Time Squad

Created by Dave Wasson for Cartoon Network, Time Squad follows the adventures of a trio of hapless ‘time cops’ living in the far distant future who travel back in time attempting to correct the course of history. The team is made up of the bespectacled young orphan, Otto Osworth, recruited on to the force due to his excellent knowledge of history; the aggressive and impulsive Buck Tuddrussel, a square-jawed veteran officer who is as dim-witted as he is braggadocios; and Lawrence ‘Larry’ 3000, a bored and prissy android who is endlessly annoyed by having to participate in missions.

During their adventures, the squad encounter numerous historical figures, including Julius Caesar, Abraham Lincoln, Sigmund Freud, Leonardo da Vinci, the Founding Fathers, and Moctezuma.  These individuals have in some way deviated from their fates as dictated by history and it is the mission of the Time Squad is to guide these figures onto the correct path and ensure the integrity of the future.  Despite the heroes’ frequent ineptitude, they always manage to succeed and right the course of history.

Time Squad features the voices of actors Mark Hamill (as Larry 3000), Pamela Adlon (as Otto) and Rob Paulsen (as Buck). The series premiered in June of 2001 and ran for two seasons.

Mightor was of course featured in Future Quest where some aspects were expanded on him. His Club's power was actually derived from the Eldritch monstrosity Omnikron & he used that power to fend off The monsters for years, until perishing in one final battle against Omnikron (sealing the monster away for the time being) & losing the club in a tar pit. Millions of years later a young boy named Ty accidentally touched the club becoming the Modern day Mightor & helped the other HB heroes fend off Omnikron for good.

I loved Future Quest. Such a fun comic and Evan Shaner's illustration was just brilliant.

Time Squad sure was one of CN's more interesting shows & it's sad it doesn't get as much recognition compared to what else was out. Granted I also think there's some unintentional dark humor to this show with these guys having to correct history as it's written. I mean buy in large they're behind Amelia Earhart disappearance, The Boston Teaparty, The Battle of the Alamo, & Making sure Al Capone & Blackbeard fulfill their roles history. Also they turned Paul Revere into a horse thanks to Sigmund Freud.

The show also showed us what it would have been like had Mark Hamill been cast as C3P0 instead of Luke Skywalker...

I got so used to your villain cut out series that the cartoon characters keep throwing me off. "What do you mean Ariel is evi-oh wait that's right."

lol

making cut-outs of heroes has been a lot of fun... but I must admit I do miss the villains.

Ariel would eventually have a daughter named Melody in the sequel. She ended up having a little too much of her dad in her as she barred her from ever going to the sea for 12 years (even hiding her mermaid heritage) in order to hide her from Ursula crazy sister Morgana, but things worked out by the end.

neat!

It's been years since I've seen The Little Mermaid. My cousin loved it so much... I think she watched it on video every weekend for a year straight. We'd have to refer to it as the 'little M' because if we said 'mermaid' around her she would lose her mind until we put it on for her...

I should add that she was four ;)
