The cast of Severance (Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower) took over a glass-walled replica of the Lumon Industries office at the Grand Central Terminal in New York, USA. For over two hours, they stayed in character as their "innies," working at their desks, doing yoga, and engaging in other office activities, just like on the show
I was struck by another thought. Mark Scout's arc is completely apolitical: he simply wants his wife back. As viewers, we also root for him for apolitical reasons: in every iteration of this story, we will always want Orpheus to bring back Eurydice. Incidentally though, Mark Scout's goal would have a political outcome: bringing Gemma back might help dismantle Lumon.
On the other hand, the situation of the innies is viscerally political: they're the dispossessed, the dehumanised. When as viewers we care for them, we do that also out of political reasons: we recognise Lumon as monstrous because we see the innies as humans. However, there's virtually no goal achievable by the innies which could have a progressive political outcome: the company literally created them; to bring down the company would mean to kill them.
If we care for the oppressed, this show forces us to root for the survival of the company. It's very good writing. And it's unspeakably cruel.
on my severance s2 rewatch and i really do think the focus on romance this season makes sense from the viewpoint of the final scene (which was what the entire season was based on) but i also think by doing so it undermined a lot of the relationships i loved in s1. like i do think we needed to see the romantic arcs of both innie and outie mark to feel conflicted in the finale, but i also think it came at the expense of a lot of nuance that i feel was missed (their reactions to irving dying, the fallout from tent scene, dylan basically being isolated from the group for most of the season and no one asking him about where he was going because no one even noticed). in s1 there were turning points for the characters to trigger the otc (burt retiring, dylan finding out he has a son, mark reading the you you are) but this season there was a sense of urgency in the beginning to find ms casey, then they all get distracted by romance (which, again, i understand why) before they rally in the finale...
also yes i understand the season happened in a matter of days and the fact that there were only 10 episodes but is it so bad to expect more from a show with such an excellent s1?
