I like Chiss a normal amount. She/her pronouns.

Finished a new piece. I think it speaks to my state of mind. Notice the fine details. :)

Something I found hilarious the other day was seeing one of those โ€œI bought this before Elon Musk went insaneโ€ bumper stickers, except it wasnโ€™t on a Tesla. It was on the most beat up 20+ year old Toyota Corolla Iโ€™ve ever seen that was missing three hubcaps and had no less than seven different dents in the rear bumper. yeah I do not doubt that you bought that one before musk went insane

How can I become a writer?

Write.

But I don't know where to start.

Write.

But I'm worried.

Actual advice if you have NO IDEA where to begin; no characters no plot no setting nothing:

Write your favorite story as best as you can, from memory. Do not check your accuracy. Put it away, don't look at it. Go read something - anything that interests you. Ideally fiction, but nonfiction is fine as long as it's longer than a tweet or a blog post etc.

The next day, write another of your favorite stories. From memory. Put it away. Read something.

Repeat this daily for at least a week.

THEN, when you've spent a whole week writing and reading, take out the first story you wrote and read it. See what mistakes and errors you notice. Write it again, better, but referring ONLY to the copy you wrote last week - not to the original material that it's retelling.

Repeat that for all seven of your other stories.

When you've got first and second drafts of all seven stories? When you've read at least 14 different things that interest you? Examine your stories for what you like about them; compare and contrast them. Look at the characters, the plots, the settings.

THEN, after you've done all that, write a story Like That. Do not worry about it being either good or original; it's an exercise. Worry only about it sharing qualities with those other stories that you picked.

Repeat as necessary until you're able to write the story that you want to write.

had a dream that someone was showing me this camera that could render anything it photographed "flawless." So like it could remove blemishes from people's faces, but also if you took a picture of a cracked glass there would be no crack in the resulting image.

Obviously this is kind of existentially horrifying but that's not the point of this post.

The point is that when dream me got the camera I immediately turned the lens onto my cat to see what she would look like "perfect." And she looked exactly the same.

So I have read several people complaining that they canโ€™t be expected to know the โ€œunwritten rulesโ€ of fandom. So hereโ€™s what I wish people knew:

Fanfiction is fiction.

Fictional people are not real.

Fictional people do not have rights.

Fictional people cannot be abused.

Reading or writing about something does not mean the desire to do or support it in the real world.

If I find art upsetting/triggering/disgusting/outraging/unpleasant/squicky/distressing/offensive, it is on me not to read it, not the creators and hosts to remove it.

Curate your own experience. The back buttons exist for a reason.

If you donโ€™t trust yourself to do that, get someone you trust to do it for you.

Fandom is an adult space. Adults create and own and host fandom spaces. If minors want to participate, then the onus is on them and their parents/guardians/trusted adults to ensure they participate appropriately, not on strange adults to stop being adults.

You often donโ€™t know the assault status or mental health status or neurotype or race or nationality or religion or gender or sexuality or age of a creator or consumer, and they do not have to disclose to you to justify their fantasy.

AO3 is not a safe space. It is not intended to be a safe space. Proceed accordingly.

Just because you donโ€™t like something or find it offensive doesnโ€™t mean it is a โ€œproblemโ€ that โ€œhas to be dealt withโ€.

Most characters in anime are not white.

There is no onus on you to reblog or share anything.

Everyone makes mistakes in fandom and is less than their best self sometimes.

Persistent pseudonyms encourage long term relationships.

Ship wars are stupid.

Someone else enjoying things does not impact on your own enjoyment of other things.

Tagging and warning is a courtesy, not a requirement. Assume any fic might contain untagged content.

Rating is an imprecise art, not a science.

Donโ€™t hassle IP creators.

Most people who are in fandom are hoping to make connections based on a shared passion.

Trying to profit from transformative fanworks puts us all at risk.

No one is obligated to share your head canon or fanon.

Being kind rarely fails to pay off.

It is okay to block and remove people who make your experience unpleasant. You donโ€™t have to placate them. (Learn from my mistakes).

Britpicking is a good thing.

You donโ€™t have to justify why you like a canon/pairing/trope/kink. Sometimes navel gazing is fun, but you donโ€™t have an obligation to explain yourself, especially to strangers. I share the overwhelming desire to refute an unfair accusation, but the people accusing you are rarely doing so in good faith, so youโ€™re batting a losing wicket.

Iโ€™m not your Mum. (Well, okay, a very few of you can call me Mum or Mom, but if you are one of them you already know who you are โค๏ธ)

If you arenโ€™t mature enough to take responsibility for your online experiences, you arenโ€™t mature enough to be in fandom spaces.

A new national day of protest is set to sweep across all 50 states on Saturday, April 5, with demonstrations organized under the banner "Hands Off" targeting threats to democracy, bodily autonomy, and climate justice. Organizers say the protests are a direct response to figures like President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, accusing them of undermining key democratic principles and freedoms.

"Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them. Theyโ€™re grabbing everything they can, and itโ€™s up to us to push back. On April 5th, weโ€™ll take to the streets with a clear message: Hands off!" ~ ThirdAct.org

A map published by the event's website, HandsOff2025.com, shows protests stretching from Anchorage, Alaska, to Miami, Florida. Some of the largest gatherings are expected in cities like Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Philadelphia, while smaller events are planned for college campuses and public squares nationwide.

"Across the country, grassroots activists, workers, community leaders and everyday people are coming together to say that it's time for billionaires and extreme lawmakers to take their hands off our healthcare, our wages, our safety, and our rights," the spokesperson said. "Trump and his billionaire allies are openly planning a power grab to roll back our rights, strip workers of protections, and dismantle the foundations of democracy in service of tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. The stakes couldn't be higher."
