Moving

Since I can't export my blog bc it's like 90GB in one file... 😒

I'll be slowly moving my stuff (fics, moodboards, etc.) to dreamland-library.tumblr.com and I will be posting new stuff there from now on

I won't delete anything here bc I don't wanna lose the lovely comments and silly tags I sometimes leave for myself to remember a WIP but I won't be posting any new fic here either. So this will remain my main blog where I reblog stuff I read or come across my dash and the taglist will be the same too but if you are only here for the fics give the sideblog a follow 🙃

I also apologize in advance for kinda spamming the tags with the reposts as I move stuff. The OCD wants everything in one place 🙈

okay this is just me being genuinely curious and wondering how people think: Do some people see Sauron and Mairon as two separate entities, if so, why?

Because to me, they're the same person, just a different name. Like how regardless of what nickname you call someone, they're still *their name* (chosen or given, whichever they use). I don't see them as Jekyll/Hyde or anything like that. Mairon, to me, isn't a persona it's just another name for the same person.

Idk i'm just curious to see how everyone feels about this bc I've been seeing mixed interpretations.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot wrt how does he refer to himself in his mind? it’s all the same person inwardly for sure. in my mind his different names are related to how he is perceived, not really his identity.

none of the names seem to fit with his self-image though? I wouldn’t think he still feels like ‘mairon’ since that’s the name he had in the beginning, in aule’s halls. and he certainly doesn’t like to be called ‘the abhorred’. annatar was just a temporary disguise…

i just don’t know!

I'd say that, in his mind, he still refers to himself as Mairon - or maybe the original Valarin equivalent of that name, since Valarin was his "first language". If there is a non-lingual version that precedes it, and that we mortals could never grasp, it might be that as well.

Let's call all the above "Mairon". I do think it's the most natural option of how he might think about himself.

I have no proof, though. He refuses to tell me. :-)

My headcanon is that he no longer refers to himself as any name at all. Like helenvader mentioned - Mairon is most likely not his original name since it's in Quenya. He might internally refer to himself as his Valarin name, whatever that is, but he's been changing identities back and forth since pretty much the beginning of time itself. I think ROP was really onto something with his increasingly mournful "I have many names" variations. He always deflects the question, and by the end of season 2, he's no longer acting smug about it. Does he even know who he is behind the masks? Is there anything left of the Ainu that once had a voice of his own?

In The Silmarillion, it's firmly stated that the Ainur who entered Arda had a clear sense of gender, so we know he's a "he". We know his virtues are a "love for order, planning and coordination" and a dislike of "confusion and chaos". Those are probably the only things he's got left of whoever he was before he started changing identities. Does that part of him still have a name? Does he still consider that his "true self"?

When I write fic from his point of view, I stick with "he". It's messy, but I feel like it's the only word that fits him at this point. He's got many names, but none of them are his.

I definitely think of Mairon, Sauron, Gorthaur, Annatar, Halbrand if you swing that way, as separate entities in an important way — but I do this to myself, too! Me in my 20s in Vegas is a different animal from me in my teens at home, is a whole person apart from me in Chicago or who I was in Brooklyn later. So much of our self-image and presentation and even what we value are malleable! And if it’s true of me, imagine spending a whole Age in one form, place, company. How you would shape and be shaped.

I think there’s a core of him that strives for validation, seeks order, and believes in his own superiority. That never changes. But every form he takes is a new start, and he fucks up every time trying to get to beauty and harmony.

This makes him many different individuals, but always a skrunkly meow meow.

It isn't often Robby does this. Find himself at a café, first and foremost. No less than on peak rush hour on a Saturday, when everyone who considers this a hobby is here.

He has a life outside of the Pitt. He would at least argue that's the case. Although, like most of his peers, his work-life balance may not be a top priority for him. A consideration, maybe. But certainly not properly prioritised.

With his position comes advantages, such as having most weekends off. It's not set in stone. The ED is understaffed, even he cannot escape the fact. And though he doesn't even want to get into the politics of gun laws, mass shootings like Pittfest were more probable to occur during weekends than weekdays.

The Fox Fairy/Spirit has a lot of variations throughout East Asia. I chose to base mine off the Huli Jing, and Tang dynasty dress. The shapeshifting, predominately female nine tailed fox also takes the form of a Kistune in Japan and Kumiho in Korea.

One of my favourite interpretations of this being is Good Hunting, the short story by Ken Liu (though not the Love, Death, and Robots inspired short animation! :( )

Original art by me! More phenakistoscopes on my page.
