Poisson d'Avril

"In 1508, French poet Eloy d'Amerval referred to a poisson d'avril (April fool, literally "April's fish"), possibly the first reference to the celebration in France." Wikipedia

Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now

He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.

He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor

Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going

For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.

He has yielded the floor at 25 hrs and 4 mins. His eyes are so wide they look like they’re going to bug out of his skull so I don’t blame him for stopping. He said to go out and get in some good trouble.

Bravo, Cory Booker. Let the resistance take the momentum started by AOC and Bernie, add Cory and Chris Murphy, encourage all Democrats to speak out, and keep these fascist Republicans on their heels.

Punch back.

Cory Booker fasted and stood all day and all night and spoke till his voice nearly gave out for his constituents. And Republicans can't even show up to town halls. The contrast could not be starker. Let Senator Booker be an inspiration to us all. "The power of the people is greater than the people in power."

this weird “get a real job” behavior towards anyone working in retail, fast food, etc is always been disgusting to me. because say those people “get a real job” who is there to stock the necessities you need like groceries, clothing, hair care, and more? people love to try to bring these people down but when they need them?

From the March 31, 2025 interview with Wendy Weiser, vice president for democracy at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School :

:The SAVE Act would require a passport, a birth certificate, or naturalization papers to register to vote in federal elections, which is a vote suppression measure that could block millions of eligible Americans from voting. Just over half of Americans actually have a U.S. passport. To the extent that the act allows birth certificates or other documents to vote, we’ve run studies with the University of Maryland and other data analysts and found that more than 9 percent of voting age citizens—that’s 21.3 million American citizens—don’t have a passport, a birth certificate, or naturalization papers readily available.
Seventy-nine percent of married women change their names, so their current names are not going to match the names on their birth certificates. So to the extent that a passport or a birth certificate are required to register to vote, it’s going to be especially harmful for married women.
In addition to disenfranchising up to 21.3 million people, the SAVE Act would also completely upend voter registration. It would end mail registration. It would end voter registration drives. It would end online registration and make it much harder to do automatic voter registration, because it requires voter registration to happen in person. You need to show those documents in person to an election official, you can’t mail it in. So rural voters, voters with disabilities, older voters are also going to face special burdens, in addition to the tens of millions of Americans who don’t have these documents readily available.

This is not right or left,

it is right or wrong.

This is not a partisan moment,

it is a moral moment.

Where do you stand?

Big shout out to all the aides and interns and others in Senator Booker's office who did the work compiling the letters from constituents, poems, and more, into the binders that he is currently reading from during his marathon. I don't know you but I see you.
