Heidi Balch in a family photo
Heidi Balch (January 7, 1964 - c. February 20, 1989) was a young woman whose severed cranium was found on a golf course in 1989. Additional remains were also recovered. Joel Rifkin, a New York-based serial killer, confessed to murdering her, along with sixteen others. She is believed to be the first victim in his murder spree.
On October 31st 1994, 7-year-old Tony Bagley was out Trick or Treating with his family dressed up in his favourite skeleton costume. Excited at the prospect of candy, he ran ahead and stopped at the end of the street. Just then, a car pulled up alongside the little boy and opened fire. He was shot in the head and died later on in hospital. His killer was never found.
On the early morning of February 17th, 1974, just after midnight, Carla Walker was abducted from the passenger side of her boyfriend’s car after a struggle with the perpetrator left him wounded and unconscious. She was found three and a half days later in a culvert next to a lakeside road.

In November 1969, Mary Scott arrived home to her San Diego apartment after her shift as a cocktail waitress. The next day, her best friend checked on her after she learned that Mary didn’t show up to work. When her friend entered the apartment, she found that her friend had assaulted and strangled to death. With little evidence to go on, the case remained unsolved for the next five decades.

Reet Silvia Jurvetson was an Estonian-Canadian woman who was murdered in California in November 1969 at age 19. Her body remained unidentified for 46 years, until an online mortuary photograph was recognized by her family and friends in 2015.
