feeling frankly insane about 2x18 the age of dissonance.

dan is actively being groomed during this plotline. he is in a secret relationship with a teacher at his school who initiated multiple meetings off school grounds, read his essays and his stories and praised him for his maturity, used him as emotional support when she felt alienated in new york (tapping into his own alienation, giving him someone who “gets it”), and then had sex with him the literal same night she was fired from her job. then, when she returns to her job, she has sex with him again while on school grounds behind the stage at his school play. because he’s in high school. he’s a high school senior.

dan cannot see how he’s being manipulated and how harmful this is for him. his dad begs him to not be “short-sighted” and to think about what he’s doing by engaging in this relationship, and dan essentially tells him that he’s an adult and will make his own choices. he’s not alarmed by multiple adults getting involved in 2x17, because he seems himself as an adult.

the act that finally makes dan realize that ms. carr isn’t a trustworthy adult is her targeting blair. he learns that ms. carr is sending information to yale and to… gossip girl …. (so crazy girl aren’t you like 25 why are you talking to gossip girl) to ruin blair’s future and he immediately does a complete 180 on ms. carr. he firmly tells her “blair is a high schooler, you’re an adult” when she tries to justify her actions, and that’s the last conversation he ever has with her.

he can’t extend that own sentiment to himself. dan is ALSO a high schooler, and yet he describes blair in that way almost as if it’s separate from himself. he doesn’t say “we’re” high schoolers. blair is a high schooler. he doesn’t see the issue in ms. carr having sex with him twice, meeting him outside of school, wanting him to call her rachel. in fact he blames himself! he thinks he’s the one who’s done wrong in the situation and defends ms. carr to everyone! but when her manipulative behavior is directed towards blair, he sees it clearly and puts an immediate stop to it. cuts it off with rachel, warns blair, and even gives blair information that could hurt his future at yale if it got out.

it baffles me that people dismiss blair and dan’s dynamic pre-season 4 by saying that their friendship/romance “came out of nowhere” like……..dan time and time again draws a line when he sees blair being treated unfairly. he expresses disappointment in serena, chuck, and now ms. carr when he feels that they’re being unkind or unforthcoming with blair. he extends to her an empathy that he doesn’t even extend to himself. it’s insane. dair forever and ever and ever until my dying day

Incredibly cool character and the only one with a brain cell - Vanessa

Really sweet character who’s capable of murder - Serena

Only one capable of keeping a plant alive - Eric

Furious bisexual - Dan
