Sonic
He has a weird thing going on with his outfit but we can excuse it. It's a sleeveless bodysuit with thigh-highs and this is mostly for fashion purposes and so he's not entirely naked under the hoodie and shorts. It's my favorite weird fashion choice for most designs so what can I say he gets it because he's my favorite. I typically make him wear reds with some brown for Shadow and Tails respectively, the brown tying to Tails' goggles and red because. come on. He can wear whatever though, I sometimes have him wearing sports fits or streetwear so play barbie with him and dress him up however idc <- me at my brain

BUILT.... LIKE BULLET TRAIN. or something. His outfit is. weird. but whatever. I just needed him to wear something. I mainly draw him in hanboks (modernized or traditional) and I tend to go for more fashionable trends for him since I like to think Rouge drags him out clothes shopping whenever he gets a minor growth spurt and suffers growing pains. He loves styling his hair, though, it's the best thing. He prefers wearing it up in a make-shift bun or smoothening it down. He wears dark blues similar to Sonic's quills and black to blend in better during recon missions for Zavok and with Rouge. he doesn't wear anyone else's colors because everyone else is dead to him. literally. i personally think he would rock KDA's fits

I decided to go for a more humanoid attempt at him and. God of Destruction who is always crying and mourning the loss of his freedom whilst being angry at the world, yes, Tikal you brave girl look what you have to deal with. I like to think his body blends in with nearby rivers or lakes so it starts flowing downwards like a long stream of hair. Yes he's the one tormenting Sonic. Yes he will never let him go. Yes weird "you don't know me. but i know you." dynamic ass. Paralysis demon.

This is Molly. Molly wanted to kill Sonic. Molly did not succeed. Molly now sticks near Shadow to give him bad omens of things. Molly is an allegory for PTSD. Molly wants to protect you. Molly will end up hurting you instead. They will cry about it and make you feel bad even though you are in pain. Molly.

Imagine if a god looked at you and said "Be Not Afraid" and you trusted them and suddenly you are over run with emotions and instability and the Chaos Emeralds hate you and you cannot outrun this and you want to stop dreaming of all the timelines you've gone through and Why Are You Still Here and also Light Gaia is trying to warn you about an incoming doom but won't elaborate. Seriously tho, it hurt just right, the fact that I can feel the exhaustion on sonic when he says he's tired is just... exquisite. I love how you described how... mentally far shadow is in his Hyper form, how for just a second of lucidity he just felt wrong and that wrong could have gone to guilt or sorrow or who knows what, but it doesn't because for how much Hyper Shadow is shadow, shadow is not really there, so there's no space for conscious thought.
I been lurking in your ao3 for some time now but the anonymity of tumblr just may help my anxiety rest and let me articulate how much I love how you write, how it feeds my need for good world building and well composed characters, and I hope you let me come back to talk about your fics because you simply have a talent that need to be praised 🖤

Obviously, Sonic has potential since he’s rotating between negative emotions including a heavy depression. But Shadow does, too. As you said, his mind is extremely gone. It takes getting tackled through literal buildings for the briefest, tiniest speck of a fleck of awareness to piece through the hyper-state’s fog. And it still isn’t enough

I’m just getting a little self-conscious about writing so much for your AU and with so little time between each other. But your permission makes me feel a lot better :D
I love Hyper’s mind. The most unhappy he gets is confused, and even then, it doesn’t last long. There’s a nuanced sort of angst in being delusional and out-of-touch. There is a balance to be struck since as an author, I need to make sure the audience knows Shadow isn’t seeing reality correctly by showing or implying that reality without making it seem like Shadow knows any of this. I’d argue it’s more challenging than Sonic’s headspace, but that might be because I have a lot of experience writing Dark Sonic’s specific brand of angst
That’s exactly what Sonic was talking about! He’s so sick and tired of being angry, sad, confused, etc. He tried fighting Shadow to a) hurt Shadow but also b) hurt himself (and maybe to feel more normal by “sparring” with Shadow). But Shadow just wouldn’t take the bait. He thought it was a game, and then he “comforts” Sonic. It just broke Sonic, left him feeling hollow and exhausted
This is all my opinion: I think that Sonic will threaten Shadow’s life. He’ll try. He might even get close. But he wouldn’t be able to do it. No matter how angry or confused or upset Sonic is, he’s still Sonic. He still thinks there’s a solution out there. He still doesn’t like killing unless he has to. He still loves Shadow (even if he can hardly process it).
It’s the same reason he can’t kill himself and has to goad Shadow into doing it for him. And maybe the part of him that still wants to live is what make him go to Hyper Shadow, someone he knows is incapable of murder

Analysis of Finally Stop Dreaming by Dylan Gossett Through a Sonadow Lens
Now, I’m not saying Gossett wrote this song with two gay hedgehogs in mind, but the song fits pretty well. I’m going to prove it. This is my first song analysis, but I’ve written songfics before (How To Rest by the Crane Wives is so movieverse coded that I’ll do that next), so let’s do this.
Finally Stop Dreaming by Dylan Gossett (reading the line as Sonic, as Shadow, as both)
Cigarette smoke silhouettes most under streetlights and lampposts
When the sun's down outside of town where the lonesome lose all hope
I’ll be frank, there isn’t much that’s specifically Sonadow-coded in these opening lines since it’s mostly setting the scene. I do think a Shadow interpretation can be made, however, since he would be the one to “lose all hope” while “lonesome.” There’s also the matter of him being connected to humanity through its vices—smoking—and elements of a city—streetlights and lampposts.
I was born to run, you were made to stay, so hold me close
This line is quite literally why I decided to do this analysis because even forget this romantic aspect, this phrase (I was born to run, you were made to stay) is quite literally just Sonic and Shadow.
Sonic was born. He’s naturally made (either actually birthed or chaos energy just blipped into existence lmao). He’s a runner. It’s how he solves problems, and how he finds them, too. It’s his favorite activity. He does it all the time.
Shadow was made. He was created by Gerald in a laboratory. He was made to protect Earth, so stay there, but more than that, he was made to stay with Maria. He was meant to help her.
And that moves into his current lifestyle. He stays to fulfill her wish. He stays with G.U.N. He stays with Team Dark. Yes, he runs, but more importantly, he stays. That’s Shadow.
From this lyric, the one asking to be held close is Sonic. There’s not much to be said there, but let’s continue
Can't lose you and I choose you, so don't let me go
Do you guys know just how many times Shadow “dies”/disappears? There’s also the matter of him teleporting away. Sonic can’t lose Shadow because of that.
I think a big part of Sonadow is the fact that more than choosing each other, they choose to make it work. Both of them have other options, but it’s always them two.
I'm a dreamer, a faith believer, and I'm always gonna need a little more
Sonic is the dreamer. He’s the optimist. He’s the one who enjoys everything to the fullest and always tries because what’s there to lose?
The faith believer is a little trickier to swing, but that’s if you only think of faith as religious. This song certainly does, but for Sonic, I think it comes more from him being a believer. He believes in himself, obviously (his ego, remember?). But he believes in others, too. He believes in his friends and their capabilities. He believes in his enemies, too, that most of them can one day find their way to the ‘good side.’
His belief in people is what allowed him to become friends/allies/neutral with Knuckles, Blaze, Silver, Sage, and ofc, Shadow (among others).
Him needing a little more is just his thirst for adventure, for more out of life
On a highway, southbound driving, you still feel like home
I'm trying to live outside my head, I'm on the road
Holding on tight, hope I don't lose sight of where I'm tryna go, oh-oh
The song uses the imagery of driving because most humans don’t run everywhere, but let’s brush past that to examine the actual meaning
With the first line, it accurately describes how I think a canon Sonadow would go. Sonic will adventure, and Shadow will go on missions. They’ll be apart and away from each other a lot. But when they are together, that’s home, and it will always feel that way no matter how much time has passed. That’s safety, comfort, belonging, and a place to go when there’s no where else to be. They are that for each other. No matter where they go or what they do, they can always go back home/reunite
Sonic is big on freedom, moving on, and being in the present. That requires him to live outside his head. It makes him reckless, but he also doesn’t overthink. One way he does is by running, by reminding himself of what this freedom/moving on/being in the present feels like
But you can also lose yourself like that, so have to keep sight of a destination. It might change immediately when you get there (like having a new goal immediately upon completing the last), but it helps ground you. That is true balance, and that’s what Sonic hopes to achieve
Lay me down, my dear, when I finally stop dreaming
I'll go with no tears, I'll leave here without screaming
I really like this line for Sonic. When he leaves, he just goes. There’s no teary farewell or anger if he’s forced/told to leave. He simply goes, free as the wind.
He’d be the same way if Shadow was the one to tell him to walk away (and mean it, ofc).
And all the way, I think of the times where I wasn't always bleeding
There’s something to this line. Sonic does not live in the moment because he ignores the past but because he reconciles with it. He accepts it for what it was and what it taught him. So, he obviously remembers a time when he “wasn’t always bleeding,” which I take to mean the time when he really was just a guy who liked adventures, when he was a nobody who didn’t sacrifice himself and hurt for the sake of others
Lay me down, my dear, when I finally stop dreaming
Been a minute since we talked about Sonadow, but here we are again
Now, “finally stop dreaming” is the name of the song, but what does that mean? Well, I’ve established dreaming to mean optimism, joy, discovery, trying, that sort of thing
So, when Sonic stops doing this, it means he’s settled. He stops searching and yearning. I don’t necessarily think it means he’s stopped being himself or that he’s sad, just that he’s calmed. Stopped roaming.
“Lay me down,” to me, has two meanings. The first is to lay someone down like on a bed. To put them to sleep. And there’s something comforting about that. Someone is there to take care of you and tuck you in and make you comfortable. When Sonic slows, he’s asking Shadow to be the one to help him fully relax and just stay for a moment
The other meaning is lay someone to rest as in the grave. And there’s also something comforting about that. Sonic wants Shadow to be there when he dies, to be the one to put him in his final resting spot. They’ve been together for so long, let them have this departing moment together
I'm runnin', you're gunnin' for somewhere new to be
Again, Sonic is running. No news there.
Gunnin’… you know like G.U.N…. And Shadow’s gun… haha
Kidding, there’s more depth here. Many of Shadow’s games and entries into the Sonic universe involves him searching for a place to belong. That’s literally what Shadow the Hedgehog (05) has him grapple with. He needs belonging after losing his place on the ARK. He searches for it, eventually finding it in Team Dark and in Sonic
Four wheels, concrete fields is all there is to see
More like “two feet,” but I digress. The “concrete fields” in this insistence seem to mean a city or roads in the sense of a car. But a concrete field in and of itself would be empty. I’m imagining a parking lot without cars. It’s loneliness, and that’s “all there is to see”
That’s what they get when they’re apart. The emptiness and loneliness, and specifically, a man-made quality to it. Since the singer is a human, I imagine he means that this concrete field was constructed by humans and metaphorically by him.
I might reading into that, but if we go ahead and apply it to our hedgies, we get the saying that they’re constructing their own loneliness
So let's make some noise and hope to God, He hears our plea
Right now, I know somehow, we'll make it and be free, oh-oh
We have many gods in Sonic but no capital G gods (as far as I’m aware? Is Vector actually Christian or am I brainrotted from Chaotix memes?), so let’s sort of smidge that a bit to a higher power or really just any force that can provide assistance
As for that last line, well, there’s Sonic for you. He might not know how it’s going to happen, but he knows good things are coming. In this case, he knows that Shadow and Sonic are going to last. They’re going to be together for a long time, perhaps all their/his (depends on if you subscribe to the immortal Sonic theory) lives
And most importantly, he knows they’ll be free. Even when together, even when apart, they’ll be free to be themselves and to find happiness and to accept the past in order to move forward. They’ll be free.

Well, Liberation is my favorite. I love my little ones so much from that fic.
As for second and third… ugh, I’m not sure. From a technical standpoint, I would have to say Helmet or Smile, You Hide It All or The Train Is Leaving the Station (please don’t go) (or especially the alternate version where Sonic does “step onto the train”). But I really like Brothers Are There To Protect You (even from yourself)

My favorite version of Sonic is definitely the games. I haven’t watched Boom, so I don’t have an opinion on that. I like Prime well enough, but there isn’t much depth to the character. While I’m fond of X’s depiction, there’s some parts about it that I don’t like so much. Movieverse Sonic is definitely a close second. On any given day, it might bump up to first, but for now, I say the games are my favorite version. Modern, technically, just because I like making him traumatized :D

While tinkering with Silver's bracelet, Tails accidentally sends himself seven years into the past. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, but he realizes this is about the time he first left for his own adventures. Sonic has been left behind, and he's not doing too well. Despite this not being his time period, Tails can't abandoned his brother. He's going to help Sonic, even if Sonic doesn't seem keen on getting help.
