  Chapter summary:

Rarely did he feel like he had the solution to anything, but with Enjolras, it was as if he held the answers to all the questions he’d never dared to ask anyone else. Jehan once said they complemented each other.

Chapter 4 of The long road up to recovery is up now! <3

Today, as a treat, I am going to walk on well-tread ground and rant about how Grantaire symbolizes the People of France. And how it is this that makes this chapter so sublime.

Three chapters before this one, Hugo speaks about how Revolution does not always find a welcome audience. How, without the People. an emeute is just that. It may have loft ideals attached to it, but it must fail. If the people aren't ready, if they lock their doors and rail at the revolutionaries outside in fear and apathy and anger, then nothing can be done.

Hugo admits that this is natural. We must let humans care about their own lives and not just the future. All of this can be handled, as long as in the end Progress continues.

"A people, like a star, has the right of eclipse. And all is well, provided the light returns and the eclipse does not degenerate into night. Dawn and resurrection are synonyms. The reappearance of the light is identical with the persistence of the self." [5.1.20]

This is reflective of Grantaire's apathy, his defining trait as a nihilist. It also reflects Hugo's implication that this is not Grantaire's natural state of being. Remember:

"Besides Enjolras, Grantaire became someone again." [3.4.1]

Not only does this tie Grantaire's existence inextricably with the Revolution, but it implies that this existence is superior, is more natural than his current one.

Grantaire also has more interactions with the People than the rest of les Amis do. See when he was meant to stir up revolutionary ideals and instead went to play dominoes. Yes he failed, but he also reflects the prevailing thought. France was not ready for a revolution. Enjolras ignored this. Lofty ideas could not reconcile themselves to the reality.

‌

All this paints a very bleak picture of course. And yet, in Grantaire's death we get that undeniable hope, which makes it all so beautiful.

We, as real people reading this book, understand that Grantaire is probably still drunk. Yet Hugo impressing upon, insisting upon Grantaire's clarity is so crucial. This, at the moment of his death, is the most lucid Grantaire has been.

Another thing that strikes me, is that thought Grantaire asks permission to die with Enjolras, he seals his own death warrant before doing so, by crying out 'Vive la Republique.' He doesn't actually ask permission to join the movement.

When the People rise, they will do so spontaneously. That crucial ingredient that is missing amongst the population has been lit in Grantaire, and it is a sign of what is to come, it is hope. He's leading the pack with his singular death, and like he measured the mood beforehead, his death can be (and to me is) read as an omen of what is to come. The eclipse - in Hugo's words - will end.

Of course, asking permission to die with Enjolras is also crucial. Not only because of the poetry of them being narrative foils, but because it works as a surrogate for the people of Paris acknowledging the bravery of those who push forward towards Progress while they refuse to budge. Again, as Hugo writes:

"However that may be, even when fallen, particularly when fallen, august are the ones who, all around the world, with eyes fixed on France, struggle for the great work with the inflexible logic of the ideal; they give their life as a pure fit for progress; they accomplish the will of Providence; they perform a religious act." [5.1.20]

Through Grantaire's death, the People come out of their fear and recognize this. Not literally, but in spirit. And if not to all of us, then to Enjolras.

Because Enjolras is, of course, crucial to this reading. Speaking of Grantaire as the People when he is merely one of many characters who are the People, it's important to ask for whom is he? Because he's certainly not for Valjean. Or Marius. Or Cosette. Or Javert. Or even the National Guards or the King or perhaps not even to the audience (if you think I'm overdoing it I respect it). But he is to Enjolras.

Enjolras is stoic throughout the whole ordeal. He speaks of glory in death. He is still devoted to his mistress, Patria. And yet his ideals have been shattered. The People were not ready. The Revolution will not come. He will die bravely, but he will have failed.

But then Grantaire stands up and says he's with them and requests permission to die by Enjolras' side.

And in that moment Enjolras' convictions are justified. If someone who has been the object of scorn, who has been apathetic, who has done little at all except annoy Enjolras and fail to stir up revolutionary thought; if Grantaire can rise up and die with him, then others will too. Perhaps not now, but in the future.

Grantaire becomes someone again when he dies next to Enjolras. And someday the people will rise.

i will find you in every lifetime (threat) is actually very enjoltaire coded when you think about it

Les Mis Shipping Showdown Semi Finals: Official Winners Reveal

(crawls onto the blog tastefully hungover) sorry this is late, lads. next time i will remember my vital modly duties before making social plans for the exact same night steals expire

Anyway, onto what's really important in life: The Les Mis Shipping Showdown semi finals.

Without further ado, the winners ARE:

Enjolras/Grantaire (83.8%) vs. Joly/Bossuet/Musichetta (16.2%)

In the end, Enjoltaire nation managed to extend an already resounding popular vote lead through the power of steals, securing their place in the grand final. JBM nation also produced some fantastic steal works, and it was amazing to see both fanbases get properly involved in the stealing game after being rather quiet in preceding rounds! But here we are, the most popular Les Mis ship on AO3 (by some 10,000 works) is in the final. One could say this was inevitable all along, but whether or not they take the overall victory is still up in the air, considering the formidable opponent they'll be up against...

Cosette/Éponine (67.8%) vs. Enjolras/Combeferre (32.2%)

You wouldn't guess it from how close this result is to the original popular vote totals, but this was an INTENSE AND PROLIFIC steal game from both sides. We already knew it would be, with both ships successfully stealing their respective quarter finals in their favour, but the numbers say it all - Team Eposette produced 59.3 points' worth of steal works, with Enjolferre nation's grand total coming to 54.4 points. In the end, the leaders of the tournament's overall steal points championship won the day, and it looks like we'll be debating an age old question in the final: yaoi or yuri? 🧐

Now onto the admin side of things:

TROUBLESHOOTING

To our knowledge, every steal submitted for this round has been counted into our total and either reblogged or queued. If you can't see your post on this blog yet and are worried it's not been counted, please follow these steps in order:

  1. Check your notes for a like from my main (@lonelyroommp3) - if your post has been seen and queued (but not reblogged here yet) my url should be in there :)
  2. Make sure neither myself or my co-mod @glindalesbian are blocked - we can't see your steals if this is the case
  3. If, and ONLY if, you come up short on these options, send us an ask so that we can double check if your steal has been counted. Your deadline for checks & appeals is 22:00 BST (UTC+1) TONIGHT. After that point I will be taking the results as official and queueing the final polls.

FINALS SCHEDULE + SPECIAL MOD NEWS

The GRAND FINAL POLL will be dropping at 20:00 BST (UTC +1) this Friday, 10th April. This will be a week long poll as usual.

There will also be a third place playoff poll between Enjolras/Combeferre and JBM dropping at 19:00 BST (UTC +1) on Friday, 10th April. This poll will only run for three days.

As a friendly reminder there is NO POLL STEALING in the final or the third place playoff. You've made it this far with a little help from your incredible fanwork making capabilities, but now you're on your own - it's time to settle this the old school way, with good old votes and propaganda.

Also, please note that both mods will be away this weekend and not able to answer asks with any regularity, if at all. This is for a VERY important reason: @glindalesbian is GETTING MARRIED ON SATURDAY!!!!! Everybody send them your congratulations and best wishes. Or else đŸ”Ș

(So basically, please behave in our absence and only message us if it is genuinely, truly urgent. We’re like your parents leaving you alone in the house for the weekend and begging you not to throw an absolute blowout discourse rager)

STEAL OFF 2 REMINDER

Finally, a reminder that Steal Off 2 opens for submissions at 00:01 BST (UTC+1) on Monday 21st April. Start getting your final works ready, and check the linked post for more details & rules.

Of course, the leaderboard has shifted a little over the course of this week with 4 ships submitting steals for the semi finals. Right now it looks a little something like this:

  1. Cosette/Éponine (168)
  2. Enjolras/Combeferre (88.6)
  3. Jehan/Montparnasse (76.1)
  4. Valjean/Javert (70.3)
  5. Turning Woman #3/Musichetta (19.1)
  6. Courfeyrac/Marius (18)
  7. Enjolras/Grantaire (15.6)
  8. Combeferre/Courfeyrac (5.5)
  9. Marius/Cosette (5.3)*
  10. Joly/Bossuet/Musichetta (5.3)*
  11. Éponine/Montparnasse (2.7)
  12. Enjolras/Feuilly (2.2)
  13. Combeferre/Grantaire (0.7)

(*technically tied for 9th place. we might figure out a tiebreaker system later)

William Finn's ability to write about human imperfection was so sincere, profound and succinct. It has not and will likely not ever be replicated. I am reminded of such simple lyrics like

'This here is love, when we're talking face to face' or 'God only knows too soon I'll remember your faults, meanwhile though it's tears and schmalz'

He is, to me, the composer that best understood the humanity that lies in making mistakes.

I'm so devastated about William Finn's passing. He was such a brilliant composer with a talent for vocalizing the best and the worst of being a human. I'd rather be sailing, The I love you song, What would I do? and so many others have been a beacon of understanding throughout my life and will continue to be. His legacy lives on.

May his memory be a blessing.

Grantaire moved to Berlin five years ago. He's happy, he gets to be a painter, he has a group of friends whom he adores, he's a well-adjusted adult living his dream life. The best part is, he still keeps in touch with all the Amis. They visit regularly and call often, they didn't stop being a presence in his life just because he's not in Paris anymore.

There is only one person that hasn't visited. For years, it formed a hole in his chest. After some time, he realised he may never fill that hole, but that maybe that was okay, that he could let bad things happen to him and not get stuck in misery. That he didn’t have to let life happen to him just because of the boy he fell in love with at 18.

So when he saw the text at the top of his phone screen he had to steel himself on the pavement and rub at his eyes to make sure he was seeing right. He didn’t feel like the lovestruck 18 year old he was when they met, or even like the hurt and resentful 23 year old he was when he left. He just felt the cold breeze, and half-stared at his phone.

Enjolras [17:03]: Hello Grantaire, it's Enjolras. I will be in Berlin next week - do you know any good hotels around the city centre? Thank you.

Third chapter is now up!! Also submitting it as part of the @lesmisshippingshowdown as a e/R steal

Oh no, Les Mis characters are your co-workers and you just sent out an email about a big project with the wrong attachment.

Jean Valjean: Waits to see if anyone else will point out the error and if no one does within 24 hours, he’ll reply directly.

Cosette: Immediately replies and includes a self-deprecating joke about how she messes up attachments all the time. Every sentence ends with an exclamation point!

Enjolras: Sends a Reply All which calls out the error in very direct terms and asks for the corrected info.

Javert: Same as Enjolras but he also adds the division director to the CC line.

Éponine: Sees Javert’s message and texts you to commiserate about that fucking guy. She keeps it out of Slack because she’s paranoid.

Fantine: Doesn’t notice that it’s the wrong attachment but does reply to volunteer her help with anything you need.

ThĂ©nardier: Doesn’t read the email and complains loudly at the next staff meeting that none of this information has been shared with him.

Madame Thénardier: Responds but only to send you a link to her latest MLM product page.

Combeferre: Emails you directly — and also asks whether this is the best approach to the project and make several suggestions which you will absolutely be ignoring.

Courfeyrac: Messages on Slack because he’s trying to put a happy hour thing together, and oh yeah, that might be the wrong attachment???

Grantaire: Only bothers to read Enjolras’ reply, then sends you a bunch of obnoxious gifs

Lesgle: Hunts down the correct attachment to send to the group, accidentally attaches the results of his latest STI panel as well. Good news is, he’s clean.

Joly: Doesn’t reply because he’s out sick today.

Marius: Didn’t read the email.

Bahorel: Never reads his email.
