The Curious Case of Kaitou Kid

(UPDATED 11/27 JST. Sections with significant new portions will be bracketed with a ☘️)

We love alliteration in this household.

To start with an anecdote, I went to the main Animate store in Ikebukuro some 2-3 weeks after M27 began showing in theaters. I had two reasons to be there: hopefully grab some copies of the Magic Kaito Treasured Editions, and grab what movie-related merch I could. The former I managed, but the latter was a lot harder. Despite them devoting nearly an entire wall on the right side of the first floor to Detective Conan merch, every single piece of non-blind box Kaitou Kid merch had been snatched up already. This trend of Kid’s merch being sold out seemed to continue for at least a couple weeks afterward, at least in and around Tokyo.

This demonstrates something I think we all already know: Kaitou Kid is a crazy popular Detective Conan character.

…Detective Conan character? Yes, but… No. But definitely yes. But… yes?

Kaitou Kid - real name Kaito Kuroba - is such a funny character if you think about him for more than a few seconds. So I chose to think about him for a few, uh. Days.

When I say he’s funny to think about, I don’t necessarily mean in terms of who he is as a character - which is admittedly also fun, because I think Gosho Aoyama is the king of gap moe - but more in terms of his placement in the greater DCMK canon. I mean, the fact that we have the “DCMK” acronym at all signifies the importance of tying these two series together. Even though they technically take place in different worlds. You know. Technically.

So I want to (mostly) chronologically go through Kid’s history in Detective Conan, how it relates to his origin as Kaito Kuroba in Magic Kaito, and amuse myself with the strange relationship he (and his source manga) has with the juggernaut that is Detective Conan.

Before we jump into this, some basic notes:

-I don’t mean for this to come across like some academic thesis. Nor did I actually think this would hit over 18k words. I’m just Like This.

-Any translations you see here are done by me, from the source Japanese.

-There will be concrete mentions of events from M27. They are comparatively trivial in terms of the mystery the film offers, but there will be spoilers for certain major parts of the plot as they relate to Magic Kaito elements. This will be clearly demarcated, should you wish to avoid those spoilers.

i feel like i just need to come out of the woodwork to regularly exclaim that weird platonic/familial shinichi and kaito is, in fact, my favorite dynamic in dcmk

i've always felt shipping has sort of poisoned parts of fandom discussion (not all of it, mind! i definitely have my more straightforward ships as well), but there's a very fun non-romantic/weird platonic dynamic to be found in kaito referring to characters like hakuba and shinichi as lovers he wants to avoid at all costs lmao. i see the vision. i just wish more people saw the vision.

i have a bunch of notes written up for a longer kai+shin fic i'd love to write, but work involves a lot of sitting at the computer and using my writing brain so it's always so hard to get the motivation to do fic

I love Soken’s music and memes as much as the next FFXIV player but you WILL start to respect Takafumi Imamura so help me god. If among your favorite tracks are Scream, Blinding Indigo, One Amongst the Weary, or Wrath of the Harrier, that’s his work. I suspect he did a lot of the composing for Dawntrail’s dungeon themes, especially Vanguard has his flavor. Daiki Ishikawa also has composed multiple incredible songs (tho I personally vibe w Imamura more). Soken is a legendary composer but there’s a reason their in-house music production is the trifecta. All three of them consistently bring their A game, and many of the tracks dubbed the best in the game are the work of two or all three of them.

Magic Kaito canon is such a mess though. There's the manga, two anime adaptations and the Detective Conan anime, movies and ova's. Sure, you can go back to the original manga but that one started out as a gag comedy and didn't even have a plot until chapter 19.

Both anime adaptations have some overlap in the heists they cover, but do it in widely different orders. The twelve episode one from 2010 introduces a villain (Spider) that's exclusive to this adaptation that changes the plot of several heists and Hakuba‘s entire character. At the end of the 2015 one (Magic Kaito 1412) the Kid Capture Brigade is formed which doesn't happen in any other version.

The Detective Conan manga and anime constantly borrow its characters but never expand on them or give them a story since they're apparently not set in the same universe. The detco heists are probably only canon to Detective Conan except, of course, the few heists that also happen in Magic Kaito 1412.

The movies and ova's are all non canon, except when they are. (How does Kaito and Shinichi being cousins affect either story when they're not even set in the same universe? I don't know, and neither does Gosho Aoyama probably.)
