I think a lot of a disco fans in addition to their cruelty and base bigotry…plain just don’t understand alcoholism. so many fics where it’s clear the author's understanding is limited to ‘guy who is just belligerently drunk 24/7'

and that leads to Harry’s status as an obsessive workaholic (who has rapidly declined in the last few months) being totally ignored because they believe he just…isn’t working. because he's drunk. so many stories that depict Harry as this after school special caliber 'lazy addict' who doesn’t do anything and makes Jean do all the work. (which is very funny because in the game Harry is the only one of the two who is doing anything and we have Harry’s ledger)

the game lays out Harry’s self medicating cycle pretty plainly too it’s just…many players are frankly very stupid and don’t want to engage with anything outside of the harmful stereotypes they’ve chosen to believe in

I agree completely that most people have very little knowledge of how alcoholism impacts people’s lives. However, I think this discussion is complicated by the fact that Harry’s job is being a cop. A lot of people find him far more sympathetic the less they picture him doing police work. In the ledger, we obviously see Harry clear a huge number of cases, quickly. Additionally he closes cases no one else cared to/could with a level of obsessive dedication:

“DAMAGED LEDGER - Threatening, fines, dragging them to the station, locking them up in the hell holes they live in, locking them up in the station, hypnotherapy -- even trying to get a local gang of *zemlyakis* to take them out (the zemlyakis gave them ethanol so Burke and Leslie would expose and rampage even harder) -- you tried it all. And still the complaints wouldn't stop. As they hadn't stopped for *ten years*.”

The “unsolvable case” For example. It’s clear Harry is absolutely a workaholic, obsessed with closing every case. While his actions here are morally questionable/wrong, no one could say Harry isn’t working his ass off. Like other people have pointed out, he’s using drinking as a self medicating tool as part of his obsessive and unsustainable work flow. However—

“But the joke's on him -- you're also drunk. Drunk out of your mind on Potent Pilsner. You slam the hardened plastic board in his face; then proceed to beat him unconscious with it.”

The way his alcoholism allows him to work and quickly close cases involves insane amounts of violence. There’s a reason the alcohol in the game gives you a boost to physique.

All of that to say: YES, people wrongly characterize Harry as lazy, when, in actuality he is obsessed with his job. That said, I think people down play his work and clearing of cases because it is much more uncomfortable to confront a cop that closes cases at all costs. An incompetent police officer who does little work is less threatening than one who will beat a civilian for public nudity and property damage. When the job in question is policing, being a workaholic is actually a negative trait.

Yes, Harry does good things while on the job too: being on top of building codes is definitely a great thing! But, anyhow, what I’ve observed with people who depict Harry as avoiding working/spending all day drinking at home, is that actually they find him MORE sympathetic the less work he does.

I know the bringing of the law (law-jaw) was meant by the creators as a fun movie reference more than anything else but it's one of the more widely acknowledged parts of canon and as someone with a partially paralyzed jaw I'm curious how that could play into his choice of facial hair.

Like Harry, my paralysis is from a young age (around 7 for me though, not from infancy), so both sides of my face look pretty distinct from each other (obv everyone has variations on either side due to dominant chewing and swallowing but they're usually relatively similar). Due to the heavy overcompensating by the muscles on one side, you end up with one very full looking cheekbone and one very high looking cheekbone in an almost comically distinct way, one that I imagine would be extremely emphasized on Harry's bloated face.

If you get a style of facial hair that only really reveals the orbital area (zygomatic bone and upper maxilla) and can be shaped to form an artificial buccal endpoint (the hollow of the cheek) you can end up with a mostly normal looking face, and one that would be in stark contrast to a clean-shaven one (or even just with less).

This also helps (to me at least) to explain why Kim reacts so strongly to your shaving. Even shaving a bit of hair does make you look very different, that's true, but he seems surprised by the "damage" in an unexpected way. The only thing that the hair would hide is further facial puffiness and rosacea, some even paler skin, and maybe some visible veins and wrinkles, none of which should be anything particularly surprising for someone who knows about your history with addiction. A stark asymmetry in the face, however, would be very unexpected imo. Many interesting implications... to me and me alone.

Had this bizarre dream about meeting Kim Kitsuragi in my apartment building at 4 a.m.(with a blizzard howling outside, it's a crucial detail)

Probably the most comforting dream I've ever had

(He had a plastic bag full of midnight snacks!! and his goggles were fogged up+he had snow all over his big stupid head. And all he told me was "Go to sleep")

Now how come i only JUST realized you can hide details on fayde… i feel ive been made a fool

(yap incoming 💥💥💥)

I don't think we as a fandom talk enough about how both Kim AND Harry both had dreams of working in fields related to the Pale as children and how that interest carried on through both their lives.

As stated, Kim wanted to become an aerostatic pilot before becoming an RCM officer. Aerostatics were specifically designed to traverse the Pale, and in game Kim wears an aerostatic pilot jacket, despite not being a pilot.

On the merch website, (which, would not recommend supporting, but I'm putting this in as a little tidbit anyways-) we can see the actual stats + description for Kim's jacket.
