If the breed featured has a debilitating health issues as their defining feature I will include a [link] to information of the condition beside the breed name.

This is not comprehensive, the abscence of a [link] doesn’t mean the breed is without issue. It may just mean there isn’t one, concise artle to link. Always do your research.

Here is some recommended reading.

If the color/pattern is relatively new, particularly rare, or affiliated with some sort of health condition I will include a [link] to information on the subject beside the color/pattern description.

The letter/number combination in the tags is determined using the Fédération Internationale Féline EMS system. I may also reference the EMS codes from GCCF, LCWW, WCF or WOF.

Here is a glossary of colloquial and breed-specific terms for colors and patterns. You can browse the different breeds, colors and patterns featured here through the tags page.

You can send in pictures of your cat if you like and I will tell you what they appear to be. It is helpful to include some history on the acquisition of your cat. It is helpful to include multiple angles, varied lighting, close-up of parted fur and especially nose and paw pads. Remember that this is an educated guess only.

I will answer genetics oriented questions to the best of my ability, I have a working understanding of cat genetics but for more complicated or in-depth questions regarding genotype I recommend asking @amber-tortoiseshell. I’m most confident with my expertise on phenotype (appearance) and cat breeds.

Disclaimer: This blog is to show cat colors and patterns, I share rare or unique colors and good examples wherever I find them. Inclusion on this blog is not endorsement of the breed or breeder.

Now introducing Fractious, the official mascot of the blog as illustrated by @jambiird based on the results of the Create A Cat poll series. Icon by @smallear.

They’re a blue silver classic tabby mitted mink longhair.

Don’t fucking put Harry Potter references on my posts or in the tags. You will be blocked.

How do you distinguish between lilac and blue? Especially in cool-toned lilacs and warm-toned blues, they look exactly the same sometimes. Is there any reliable way to tell the difference?

It’s hard for me to explain because I’ve been looking at them long enough where they don’t look the same to me but in a way that’s hard to put into words…

The nose leather in solid cats and the paw pads are a good guide - the caveat being lighting can be deceptive, I’ve seen blue and chocolate noses look black in certain lighting or with poor photo editing.

In general I would say lilac paw pads are shades of pink while blue paw pads are purple-ish to brown-ish and usually have a sort of rich color to them.

The agouti gene modifies the color of the nose leather but in solids lilac cats often have a sort of matte look to the leather and will be a muted purple-ish hue although it can look more dull pink-toned at times while blue cats have a more slate-y gray nose and tend to be more uniform.

In adult lilac points and lilac lynx points the points will usually be lighter than in blue points and blue lynx points.

Lilacs are sort of… dusty or pastel browns? But blues don’t usually of that dusty or pastel look to them, blue cats make me think of nature imagery - smoke, sky, river, etc.

Context clues can also be helpful… yes lilac can occur in random-bred cats andpeople can introduce lilac into breeds where it isn’t part of the standard but if you see a street cat or a Maine Coon and you’re not sure if they’re lilac or blue? Odds are they’re blue.

Warning: This post will contain mention of animal death, animal injury and burns. If you wish to donate without further information here is the link.

If you at all follow the animal rescue community online you may have already heard about this tragedy, I have even seen articles out of the UK and India about what happened - the international rescue communityis shaken by the enormity of this loss.

At around 7:15am EST yesterday afire occured at the sanctuary in Medford, New York on Long Island. It ultimately claimed the life of the owner and sources estimate at least 100 feline residents, leaving a potential ~200 more cats in need of aid.

This is local to me.

The clinic I work at is not one of the primary veterinarians that served the sanctuary, but some of our clients are volunteers there and would bring some of the cats to us… we have patients who we don’t know yet what happened to.

If you live on Long Island or the surrounding area there is a desperate need for fosters so the rescued cats have somewhere to go. I have seen The North Fork Country Kids and Strong Island Animal Rescue League put out a call for fosters.

Both of these organizations are accepting donations directly in addition to the main GFM.

There is also a seperate GFM for a cat named Crystal who was rescued from the fire and is being treated at an emergency and specialty hospital, the fundraiser was made by an employee of the hospital who is fostering her.

A Facebook group has also been put together to try and match found cats to the people who may be looking for them - volunteers, people who surrendered cats to the facility, etc. Do not approach the area of the sanctuary to search.

A link to this post will be added to my pinned and I’ll update this post as information becomes available.

I do not intend to turn reblogs on for the post, I don’t want to deal with comments… I’m just talking to my followers. Thank you for understanding.

04/01 Update [Link 🔗]

A warehouse has been secured in Holbrook, NY to work out of as a makeshift sanctuary to temporarily house the cats as they are vetted and fosters as sought. Paws of War is assisting with their mobile veterinary clinic, they don’t appear to be requesting donations for the situation at this time.
