Fir & Fireweed - IF Author

@fir-fireweed

Call me Fir | She/her/bruh to my kids | Author of “Viatica” and “Cantata,” both IFs available on itch.io | ko-fi.com

Intro Post for my new WIP, “Cantata.” If you haven’t yet read my completed IF, “Viatica,” you can find it here on itch.

A low fantasy IF loosely based on the Italian Renaissance period, with a steampunk edge.

SYNOPSIS

The story is set in Saleste, an empire with a long history of expansionism and colonization. It is a vast, wealthy empire, very much set in notions of classism and noble privilege. And its warmongering has only grown more brazen under the current regis (monarch). Saleste is currently at a stalemate with Tinebaille, a neighboring island nation the empire has repeatedly tried, and failed, to conquer.

Within the empire, technically citizens but not, are the Iredicci. The Iredicci are as much a religion as they are a race—less like priests and more like monks or shamans. The Iredicci can hear and feel the cordis, the harmonic pulse that connects all living things, and they connect to it through song. Iredicci have excellent hearing, but their defining feature is their voice—they have an echo to their voice, a resonance of two pitches at once. The regis asked the Iredicci elders to use their unique gift to help him conquer Tinebaille, but as a peaceful people, they refused.

A simple, nomadic people, the Iredicci were traditionally welcome in all corners of the Saleste Empire. But as steam technology progressed and the push for new resources grew, a prejudice developed against them. The regis spread propaganda against the Iredicci, painting them as an inferior, uncivilized people who leeched off the empire rather than aided it. Over the years they stopped being welcome. Eventually, their travel was restricted, and the Iredicci were forced to live in settlement camps.

You are one of the Iredicci, born into such a camp. The elders sing songs of past travels and wonders you have never seen. Ever the optimists, the elders tell you to take heart. To be thankful you are among friends and family. That things can’t possibly get any worse.

Until they do.

Hey, I'm the person who found Cantata and named their MC Sowa for Owl, I found Viatica and... It's (Contraction, ah-ha!) beautiful. I played it several times throughout today to see as much as I can, and each read-through made me care and love the world more and more. I loved Ferret the most in honesty, her story was absolutely heart-wrenching, and the ending with her and her daughter was so heart-warming. In fact, the endings were all perfect. I was so scared that this was going to end in a failed rebellion or escape, with Bear having betrayed them but I was so happy that wasn't the case, like you have no idea how much. Its made me want to write stuff for it, maybe a continuation of journal entries from the MC, going as far as maybe even 60 years into the future, see how the city grows in culture, government, the happy times, the hardships, exploring beyond the walls, just... Life. You have written something amazing and exceptional, I think true art and if Cantata is even only a third as good as Viatica is, I will follow its progress thoroughly. Thank you again for writing something so wonderful! :)

Hello, and thank you! I loved that you played through multiple times. Ferret’s rebellion ending is my favorite, too!

And you never have to worry about a bad ending from me, because I don’t like writing them, lol. There may be some angst and close calls along the way, but I like happy endings. 🥰

I don’t mind fanfic if you wanted to continue with these lovelies on their journey. I only ask that you credit my original work and don’t collect any money off it.

Thank you again for giving my stories a try and for your kind words!

I noticed in Cantata that when I chose attunement, it also chose eye color and skin color. Will the MC always have black eyes and pale skin, or are those options that I somehow missed? Or will be added in later?

Hi anon! You must have missed the choices. The immediate next passage after you confirm your attunement is where you see the skin and eye color options.

The colored and italicized words are actually links. If you tap/click on them, they’ll rotate through your options.

Hope that helps!

Hello, Fir. I am really nervous to ask this and I hope it will be answered with care.

I love your IFs Viatica and Cantata, and I was hoping I could take some inspiration from both. It would be like a blend of Viatica and Cantata in a sense. I would love to describe it, but I was going to personally write it first (maybe a premise?) before sharing. I would probably just write the first chapter and I could share it with you? I don't normally finish my stories, but I would love to share this idea.

I wanted to ask your permission first however.

Again, love your IFs and I looked forward to seeing more! Take care, Fir, and have a great day!

Hello, anon!

First and foremost… THANK YOU for asking my permission. I very much appreciate you doing so, and the respectful and delicate way in which you did it. I might add, you don’t expressly need my permission, but I deeply appreciate that you asked for it.

Second, you said stories so I’m assuming you meant traditional stories and not an IF? If you meant making your own IF that’s a blend of mine, that makes me a little hesitant. But if you meant a different media like a linear story, then that’s fine. And if you were thinking more along the lines of fanfic, a story set in my universe, then that’s fine, too.

Third, inspiration can be a loaded word. In most cases, no, I don’t mind at all. Viatica was itself inspired by works like “Fahrenheit 451,” “Anthem,” and “1984.” I think you can take inspiration from something and make it your own.

Cantata was inspired by the video game Jade Empire. In the game, the PC is the last of a line of monks who worshipped the Water Dragon and were wiped out by a power hungry emperor. See the parallels? 😉 But I took that idea and it evolved into what Cantata is today. So drawing inspiration is fine, as long as it doesn’t venture into plagiarism.

I do have 2 requests though. One, that you credit/tag my original works in some way. Two, that you don’t make any money off of this.

I would love it if you shared with me, I really appreciate the offer. 😊 Thank you again for asking me first!

Just found you today and by god, Cantata is gold. Haven't checked Viatica yet, but plan to soon. I gave my boy Nox the fake name of Sowa because it's Polish for Owl, and I kinda imagine him just being Owl-like. The Ferret's name is Tin. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think Sowa just decided upon a random word and stuck with it. I'm really excited to see where all this goes and can't wait to burn the empire down. (Sowa is not fire attuned, he's wind, he will still burn the empire down regardless) :)

Hello, and thank you! I saw your second post about Viatica, I’m just still catching up on asks, lol.

Nox/Sowa sounds wonderful and he can most definitely burn the empire down. 💪🏻 Or go full on big bad wolf, too, lol.

Thank you for giving my story a try! I especially love hearing from readers who aren’t familiar with my previous work. 🥰

Oh hey, I guess I'm still sending back to back asks, but I have a question about the worldbuilding. An oddly specific one, again haha.

So, what are non-Iredicci people called? What I mean by that is that Iredicci are not a non-human species, right? The way I understand it, they are another "race" of humans. But that means I guess it's not like "humans and Iredicci" the way another fantasy setting could have "humans and elves/dwarves/orcs/whatever else", since we're not talking about entirely different species. So what's the official terminology for the non-Iredicci people?

Avatar

Hello again! 👋 I confess, I’ve only got some vague thoughts on this right now. 🥴

You’re right, everyone is human so there’s no different species. At this time, everyone else is either Salestian (a citizen of Saleste) or Tinebaillese (citizen of Tinebaille). Saleste is an enormous empire, and that includes other conquered peoples and lands. The empire has a strict policy of assimilation, repressing and denying the cultures of conquered peoples. The Iredicci are unique due to their magic and their dominant genes; the empire can’t assimilate them as they have done other races. But that uniqueness is what made them a target.

There will be instances when other nationalities/races come up. There was a nation on the eastern plains, for instance, that will come up that I haven’t named yet. And Thaleia is descended from a southern (as yet unnamed) desert country.

I do plan to introduce these cultures eventually, as the resistance grows and the cracks in the empire begin to show. So stay tuned!

About hobbies, since people are talking about that.

It's funny because I usually pick more artistic hobbies in IF, when given the choice, but in this case I picked cooking. Not only I think my sweetheart MC just wanted to help his community by making delicious meals since it's always good for morale (and well, the game indeed more or less references that so that's nice), but also I sort of imagine a fire attuned iredicci who loves touching stuff also likes the feel of all the aliments and what not when preparing, so it must be an exciting experience every single time.

I usually pick music if there’s an option for that, go figure. 😁

I love that description of your MC, it suits him! I also love hearing the thought you (and other readers) put into creating your unique MCs. I’ve really tried to include more customization options this time around so it makes me happy to see the results! ❤️

Hngshuwjwh!!!!💗 You have no idea how precious calliope is to me, Love her character so much def gonna romancing her later!! (I like girl who love to yap!)

I can see her like to tinkering stuff, is that her hobbies? If you dont kind me asking can you tell me what are the other RO's hobby is?

Yay! A Calliope romancer! ❤️🙌🏻

Tinkering is more Calliope’s job than a hobby, but she enjoys doing it so I guess that counts as both? She enjoys cooking, too, though she’s exceedingly bad at it. She’s also a voracious reader.

Corinne likes playing chess. She’s also a history buff, particularly military history, and her office is filled with books on the subject.

Vicente is an artist, like his mother before him. He prefers pencil sketches over painting, but is actually quite skilled at both.

Bayram is a very active and physical guy, so his preferred pastime is swimming or sailing. He also enjoys music, and plays a wooden flute popular among his people.

Anonymous asked:

What is RO's favorite food/drink?

(Love youre story btw >^< 💕💕)

Hello anon! I haven’t thought about this beyond generalities, nothing specific. So we’ll be discovering that together as I write the IF. 😁

But generally speaking… Calliope likes hard candy, as you’ve already seen in Chapter 2. It’s not just the sweetness of it, it’s also that she’s constantly doing something, and that includes always having a hard candy to suck on! She likes sweet drinks, too.

Corinne really likes baked goods, like pastries, cookies, and sweet breads. In those rare moments of downtime, you’ll find her in her office with a cup of tea and some kind of doughy goodness.

Vicente doesn’t drink alcohol but they do enjoy a good cup of coffee. They prefer savory over sweet foods; not necessarily spicy, but lots of flavors and herbs going on.

Tinebaillese cuisine is rather spicy, so Bayram does prefer spicy food. Their cuisine is also more appetizer like: a variety of small dishes shared by many people, rather than single big meals.

And thank you!

Anonymous asked:

Is there gonna be a moment were mc mouring like I mean the mc was struggling to move on from their past? Will there be a strong impact because of it with their mental state?

Hi anon! There’s going to be moments that trigger grief, like you saw in Chapter 2. For example, seeing the imperial soldiers for the first time in 5 years triggered the MC’s nightmares.

I can’t honestly say whether there will be a full on breakdown moment if that’s what you’re asking. I don’t plan one, but moments of grief usually happen organically in my writing as I’m constructing a scene. I can tell you there will be more moments where the grief returns, but how impactful those moments are, I can’t say.

Hope that was clear. A lot of this story is writing itself at this point and I’m discovering it along with you! 😁

Hello there fir!!! I've just played chapter two cantata and I'm in love with this IF- gosh I'm speechless...the worldbuilding is so creative- um, this is my first time encountering this kind of IF theme so I'm very intrigued and excited to wait for the next chapter!!! Hehe

Of all the mc's I've seen on your cantata story blog (I love them all, they're so unique btw 😋) I'd also like to introduce my mc- his nickname is "irama" which means in Indonesian rythm/rime. She's a really awkward and stiff person haha- my girl doesn't know how to take compliments.

I love eva she took my heart and reminds me of my older sister 🤣🤣 and calli is really cute can't wait to be her best friend in the future!!! 💗💗💗

And um- I'm really looking forward to her interaction with bayram in the future tehehehehe- I mean imagine a person like bayram meeting a "ball of anxiety" "dont know what tf is going on" mc (I really like the Opposites attract trope 😭😭😭😭 ) i think my mc will have to proceed her feelings towards him 😔😔

Ekhem- despite all that, your story made me interested in playing viatica as well. So thankyou for reading my yapping sorry if my english was bad, love you 😭💗💗💗

Hello, and thank you! I love when readers introduce their MCs to me. It is lovely to meet Irama, too! I love all the thought and meaning everyone is putting into their names!

Calliope will definitely be your best friend! I’ve already written a brief scene where she and Eva tag team as your wingwomen and it’s cute! I do have to be careful when writing her, though; it’s easy to slip too far into best friend territory with her and I don’t want everyone friend-zoning her, lol.

Bayram, unfortunately, is the one RO who doesn’t return in Chapter 3, but I can promise in Chapter 4 and beyond you will have as many opportunities for awkward and playful interactions as you want! 🥰

Thank you for your kind words! This was a lovely ask to receive!

Anonymous asked:

are we going to get a glimpse of RO's childhood in the future chapter?

Not as flashbacks or full scenes, no. As you interact with and get to know the ROs, they’ll open up about their past. The glimpses will be similar to the one you already had for Calliope: seeing her bond with her father and learning that they tinkered on projects together. Expect little bits like that.

Thanks for the ask!

Anonymous asked:

Does the MC keep up with their hobby after being adopted? It wasn't mentioned after the family moved away from the city, so I wasn't sure.

Hello! The hobby was mentioned in Chapter 2, although briefly. You engage in your chosen activity for a quick moment of relaxation in the scene at home, after returning from town seeing the imperial soldiers.

The hobby will also come up in interactions with the ROs and moments of downtime. There may not be much of the latter in the next few chapters, as events will start happening quite rapidly.

Keep in mind, we’re only 2 chapters in to an IF that will probably be close to 15 chapters (rough estimation, don’t hold that as gospel). But the point is, there’s plenty of time for many things to occur. 😊

Anonymous asked:

Can we change what we wear later?

You can eventually, but not for a while. There are two planned opportunities for attire changes: at one point you will go to Tinebaille and you can choose to wear their native clothing; and after your secret is revealed you’ll be able to choose whether you want to wear traditional Iredicci garb.

Those are the only 2 costume changes planned for now, but I may add in others as the story evolves. Thanks for the ask!

All the RO’s introductions were so natural, and it flowed so well. It was a really nice way to show their personalities both in description and in dialogue!

This is a really cool IF and I think MC is quite cheeky (throwing the barrel into the ocean) which is really enjoyable!!

You’re doing great and I hope you have a great day/night ✨✨

Barrel? What barrel? MC was a total angel, no one saw a thing. 😎😇

Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I know it was just a brief introduction, but there’s plenty more in store!

I hope you have a great day/night, too!

Anonymous asked:

After reading the intro post, I wasn't expecting Vincente to be as cute/soft in his introduction as he was 🥺. I think being saved by them and then him using sign language to tell the MC his name (when he didn't even tell Calliope) would have made my MC a little heart eyes over this person she knew for like 1 hour lol. Ignoring the whole imperial soldier thing...

Aww, I’m glad you thought so!

I characterize Vicente as ruthless, which is really a loaded word. While some people might think it synonymous with cruel or evil, I think of it more as single-minded or unrelenting in his pursuits. He’s not ruled by emotions, not brutal just for brutality sake like his father. There’s a purpose and rational thought behind it. He was only 17 when MC met him, too, so his personality wasn’t hardened completely.

I can’t wait for you to see the characters grow! Thank you for the ask!
