Here are six varied sketches I made for unrelated projects or simple, fun warm-up exercises! I think they look pretty together :)

What I was thinking for each sketch:

1. Noldor elves/ Feanor/ 2. I love oak trees!/ 3. I love storms/ 4. THRANDUILION! Legolas and another brother riding through the woods. Inspired partially by encountering and reading the lovely deep-lore fics of @sotwk which centre around Thranduil and his family/ 5. Yes Uve been re-reading the Iliad and re-watching Troy (2004) and it shows lol/ 6. I was thinking about the Anduin river and how it might look from a boat, near the wide shore.

I'm SO excited to receive the artwork print I purchased from @g-m-kaye's Etsy store!!! She paints gorgeous Tolkien artwork, mostly for The Silmarillion, but here is a rare painting of Mirkwood, with two Mirkwood elves/princes riding through the forest!

@g-m-kaye is so enormously talented and very sweet, and I'm so honored to have her as a friend! Highly recommend checking out her shop; if you find any art on her blog that you want to have as a print, she might even be able to accommodate your request (like she did mine, LOL!). She even included an extra art print (Finrod and Beren!), and I'll treasure her personal note as well!

Having artist friends is just the COOLEST EVER. AHHH. MORE PLEASE!

Thank you SO much for such a warm and beautiful review, my dear friend! 🤍

Sketching a rough concept for ASTERIA, mother of HEKATE 🔮

ASTERIA (aka Delos) was the Titan goddess of falling stars and perhaps of nighttime divinations such as oneiromancy (by dreams) and astrology (by stars). She was the mother of Hekate (Hecate), goddess of witchcraft.”

Would anyone be interested if I made this sketch available as a small print? 🤔

Please do come and follow me on Instagram if you’d like to be mutuals there! https://www.instagram.com/g_m_kaye?igsh=aW1rdWhwN2NtdXls

I’ve been away recently illustrating, editing and formatting my poetry for publication :) This weekend, at an autumn Arts Festival near Cambridge, I finally exhibited quarto 1 of 4 that will comprise my “20 Years By Moonlight” anthology! 🌕 Slowly, projects are coming together.

Apologies for my absence - I’ll be catching up on correspondence here now I have some time and space! Yay! And posting new art. Bises x

Gondolin before the fall- (concept)

“The world was fair, the mountains tall,  In Elder Days before the fall  Of mighty kings in Nargothrond  And Gondolin, who now beyond  The Western Seas have passed away:  The world was fair in Durin’s Day.”

Hallo! Happy to say that this OG Gondolin painting of mine is finally available from my artist’s shop as a fine art giclée print! A4 and A3 available.

All my new art listings are now printed by me in my home studio :) I always print on thick 350gsm museum etching archival quality paper. I use a beautiful 10 cartridge inkjet printer that produces professional giclée standard prints!

Ships worldwide! 💫

I now have a Folksy shop where I sell my prints! It’s essentially like Etsy used to be 🤍 and it is based here in the U.K.

Cottage industry businesses like mine are fighting for oxygen in a space now clogged with mass manufactured goods that drown out our work with mass marketing and spam.so please consider supporting small creative businesses! :)

I’ll be adding lots more of my illustrations in coming weeks, too. Please take a look & share/ like 🍀 every interaction helps so much for a small creative business like mine! Thank you!

(I now print my own fine art prints of my illustrations, since I purchased a beautiful pro inkjet printer for top notch giclée printing. I use fine art, heavyweight museum etching paper of archival quality 👌✨)

Hello! I absolutely love your art, especially your Lord of the Rings art. Your landscapes and backgrounds are gorgeous, with so much detail and life! As an artist who is good at characters but bad at backgrounds, do you have any advice about how you make yours look so eye-catching and realistic? And how to make the characters in them seem natural?

Hello there! Firstly, please allow me to apologise for this ridiculously late response 😵 Secondly, thank you very much for your lovely compliments and intelligent questions! I’ll answer both in turn:

- the trick to eye catching scenery (and any art in general!) is to have a firm grasp of visual composition. There are techniques/ rules that balance the scene and “lead the eye” and are pleasing to look at - things that make the viewer say “oh wow that’s cool! But I’m not sure why..!” :) This alongside a strong use of what artists call “values” in the industry (essentially light and darkness). For more detail on this please feel free to message. Or I’ll do a post on it sometime if people are interested!

- the way to make characters blend seamlessly into a landscape or scenery is to view them *as part of the landscape* even if they are a focal point. The compositional principles carry through to the characters :) paint them in and plan them at the same time as you’re painting and planning the scenery. As in traditional painting. If you’re adding them in afterwards, follow the composition.. and make sure (if working digitally) that you match and colour grade the characters to blend with the background. Again this is a brief reply, with little detail, but that’s the general advice! Let me know if you want more detail! Xx
