strangely common misconception that words have basically the same meanings in every langauge and that translation is just a matter of identifying which exact word in the target language corresponds to the word in the original language

Good Omens saves me and you help me to find my path. Since I have joined you I made new friends, I learned a lot of english..., I traveled, I've done things I never thought I could do my whole life and above all you gave me the possibility to do what I love : create and bring hope and joy for everyone.
It's not always easy, as people know I struggle with my health, I have no proper job and I fight for LGBTQI+ rights, especially trans right and I try to be a good ally in all the other fights. For that I'm volunteer in the first LGBTQI+ association here in my city, I'm an activist and I recently created my own association with some friends.
When I started Teach Me I had no idea the impact it will have on trans people, mostly trans masculin people. I received a lot of good comments, lot of love for the story, lot of good feedback. But the most important and priceless messages I got was from young (and less young) trans people who found themselves, who found the strenght to came out, who started their own transition .. just because this story. I have no word to say how much I'm happy and proud for this.
And none of this would have been possible without @goodomensafterdark , the people who created it and the people who give their time to allow it to exist. It's not easy, it's a lot of work and they do it for free, for us, to make it a safe place for everyone.
Recent event in the community put this place in danger, pointing out the mods and pretending a certain complacency with problematic people, I even read they get artists (by artists they mean just illustrators.. to be clear. I include writers in artists anyway) preferential treatment?? Finally blame GOAD to claim being a safe space when it's not...
So I just want to remind you there is no perfect safe space as long as there is more than one people in it. We are human, we are all different, we can agree on many things but we are not perfect! No one is. We all make our best, even the moralizers.
Places like @goodomensafterdark might be not perfect but they are precious, especially now!

GOAD is chalk full of lovely people. I’ll highlight two podfic works I did which link back to a couple of the amazing trans creators above!
A long time ago I read a story based on @gahellhimself-blog Teach Me universe—written by @blackjeans93 — which I fell in love with. It revolves around young trans Crowley, his struggles with perception throughout early childhood, and his friendship with adorable Loki who becomes his brother. This was one of my earliest podfic works, and I’m still very proud of it.
Features a couple cute baby squeaks from my little Nosling as Baby Crowley!

J'ai vraiment besoin de ton retour d'expérience sur le cancer du sein, l'interdiction des traitements hormonaux et comment tu es parvenu à faire ta transition contre vents et marées. Bravo !
Tu l'auras compris, à part la batterie, nous avons des choses en commun et je ne trouve personne comme moi.

Hello, je me permet de te répondre en publique au cas où certain.e.s se trouverait dans le même cas.
Le cancer hormonodependant ne pose pas de problème et n'est pas incompatible avec un traitement hormonale masculinisant. La testostérone se transforme certe en œstrogènes quand elle est présente en trop grande quantité mais cela reste infime et il existe un traitement (letrozol) qui coupe l'aromatase et qui est souvent déjà prescrit dans l'hormonothérapie contre le cancer du sein. Le mieux c'est de se tourner vers un endocrinologue spécialisé dans les transitions de genre et consulter plusieurs specialistes jusqu'à en trouver un compétent qui sera d'accord de t'accompagner.
Si il faut encore un argument, on m'a expliqué que si je voulais encore avoir un enfant plus tard il y avait des solutions, qu'on me suivrait dans la démarche.. je ne suis pas médecin mais je pense qu'une grossesse est infiniment plus productrice d'œstrogène que les résidus que laisserai l'aromatase. Il me semble donc que la justification pour mettre un frein a une transition sur cette base est, sinon transphobe, au moins un vrai manque d'information.
Si tu es en Belgique je te propose de te rapprocher de la maison arc en ciel de Namur où je suis volontaire, on t'aidera du mieux que l'on peut.

I haven't purchased a HP item in close to a decade - I use the books I already had as doorstops or to prop a laptop up for meetings nowadays.
There is NO "death of the author" with JK Rowling - she controls and continues to profit from her IP, and uses that money to fund hate groups.
Here's your periodic reminder of why it's so important not to buy any Harry Potter merch or watch anything JKR profits from.
It isn't about cancelling problematic media, idgaf. We're capable of reading books we already own with a critical eye.
It's about not giving more power to someone who is using it to materially harm our community.
And yes that includes that shitty video game, yes that includes the Lego sets, yes it includes visiting the theme park. Stop giving Transphobia Georg money.
actually, funnily enough, it does not include visiting the theme parks. i have read JKR's agreement with Universal Studios: she does not gain money from ticket sales or people riding the rides.
she gets money from merch sales in the parks.
literally anything hp branded or purchased in hp land, even bottled water, she makes money off of.
if you are already at universal, riding the hp rides or whatever does not give jkr any money or, in fact, any tangible benefit at all. simply do not buy anything.

Writing is political.
January 20, 2025 To some extend, everything is political - wherever people get together, live together, build communities, all of it is political, because there are so many things influencing each other. Also, your private life is political. Don't believe me? Think about health care. About care work for children or the elderly. Who does household work? Who works and under which circumstances? Also think about relationships, even these have political aspects to some extend, just think about reproductive rights in the US and other countries. Think about other human rights which get threatened all over the world.
Even saying you are not interested in politics is a political decision in one way or another. This is mostly done by people who are so privileged that they do not have to care about politics much, because the political system works in their favour.
Likewise, stories are political, because they are reflections of the human experience, of societies, of private life and public life in communities. The existence of queer people and other marginalized people is political, because while there is equality for everyone on paper (or it used to be), reality looks very different. Queer and marginalized people get discriminated, bullied, gaslighted, manipulated, and worse. There is a growing right-wing backlash to progressive politics.
Lately, I have written two fanfictions and I couldn't help myself but bring politics into these. "Beau and the Beast" has anti-monarchist ideas in it and a bit of a queer, inclusive utopia. In "The Story of Alexander Lemtov", which is set in 2024, the Russian protagonist starts to question what to do with his immense wealth and cuts ties with his home country because he can't tolerate and accept the war against the Ukraine.
I often write queer or otherwise marginalized characters and I am going to keep doing that, showing their joys but also their struggles.
