Gossameru Fansubs

@gossamerufansubs

Starting a fansub group in 2023? Why not! I grew up on fansubs in the early 2000s and want to continue on the grand legacy of fansubbing.

Welcome to Gossameru Fansubs! I have done translation professionally in the past for other languages (French and German to English) but now just do it as a hobby.

I only translate and post items that are out of print and extremely difficult/impossible for people to find in English.

I am studying Japanese at the N3 level and use a combination of my language skills, auto-transcription, and translation tools to do my translations. They are amateur but I hope to continually improve as I do more of them! You can find most the ones I've done so far at this link on Archive.org. I also will have more comprehensive information, including credits lists and song lyrics from the movies, on my Neocities page.

I use a mix of Subtitle Edit, Aegisub, Handbrake, and Adobe Premiere Pro to do my fansubs.

Gossameru Fansubs is named after my cat, Gossamer.

Current projects:

  • Working on: Reina (1995)
  • On the docket: Something from Center Island probably?

If you know any other indie heroine 80s-2000s tokusatsu films that haven't been subbed, let me know! I can't guarantee I'll do them but if they look cool I'll add them to the list.

If you are on this page, you've probably already seen Hazel's video, where I first got the idea to translate these kinds of movies. If you haven't seen it and you're on this page, definitely go watch it!

I keep a list with 4 tabs: unsubbed films that I may do one day + what I've already done, already subbed ones I will get around to watching, ones I don't intend to fansub but hey maybe someone will, and a miscellaneous tag for my own personal recordkeeping. The lists may have some films that don't fit the above criteria but the majority do. If you also do translation, feel free to use my list to do your own translations (I just nicely ask that you not translate on anything I put in "working on" haha but anything else is fair game, just let me know so I can remove it from my list!)

Who was "Eiyu Club"?

Eiyu Club, simply put, was a small independent production company in the late 1990s to late 2000s who primarily did low-budget android heroine tokusatsu movies.

[A behind-the-scenes shot from Eiyu Club production Red Lilac: Dream of Shudder, presumably on the state-of-the-art landing pad for the action scenes.]

It's been difficult to find an English-language summary of who they are, so I've done a bit of a dive into their history and how they worked. Join me below the cut to figure out who exactly Eiyu Club was, and how they made their films!
