Warning: Most posts are UNTAGGED. Sci-Fi Fan, Realm Grinder Casual, Starsector Player, College Student Cisgender, Male, Assexual,He/Him Proship sympathizing. Antis will be ignored, as they have failed to convince me. Will block if antagonized. Blog look not final.

That Tumblr death note poll having over half of voters say they would use it to purge their political enemies puts so much of this site into context. Almost nobody here is progressive you're all just aspiring inquisitors and tchekists looking to purge the world of the unholy through fire and sword. The only guiding moral principles on this site are that might makes right and that the strong should do as they please while the weak suffer what they must. It genuinely contextualizes all of the awful behaviors that are accepted as normal here.

You know, there's something else interesting and insidious revealed by this.

Imagine the most horrific, harmful person you can. I'm going to go with Elon Musk, who somehow manages to get worse every time he breathes. Billions of lives hang on this man's every whim and he treats it like a game.

So let's do a thought experiment. Please set a timer for three minutes before you continue to read.

Your most horrible person is in front of you. You can hear a car go by; the wind blows. Somewhere a bird chirps. It's not too hot out, just warm and breezy. You can smell somebody grilling dinner somewhere. The sun is that syrupy late-afternoon light. There's a radio playing a block down and a couple of kids laughing, but where you are, the street is empty.

You can kill this person. Right here, right now. Nobody will stop you. You may be pursued, but you will not be caught. The only catch is this: you have to do it with your bare hands. Put them around this person's throat, feel the flesh give. Watch them slowly turn red, then blue, then purple. See their tongue swell and protrude, their eyes bulge, their mouth foam. Watch a trickle of blood from their nose or a corner of their eye. Listen to their last gurgling breaths as they wheeze, then choke off entirely. Watch them flail, then sink to their knees, then crumple. Maybe they beg. Maybe they call for a parent or loved one, voice trailing off to a whisper and then a croak. You have to see the fear in their eyes, watch it slowly fade into confusion as asphyxia sets in and then see the light die as they become not-a-person and turn into just-a-body. You have to feel their pulse turn rapid and frantic under your fingers, trying desperately to race oxygen to a brain that can't receive it.

Go look at your timer.

The time left is how much longer you have until the person you're strangling falls unconscious.

They're not dead yet. You have to keep going. Depending on your hand strength, this could take up to an hour.

How do you feel right now? Uncomfortable? Uneasy? A little nauseous? I read a lot of mysteries and listen to a lot of true crime at work, and this was not an easy post for me to write. If you don't have that kind of tolerance built up to hearing graphic descriptions of violence it's probably worse. Sorry.

If this sounds totally okay to you, even on a "well, if it was so-and-so" basis, you need to seek psychiatric help, because what I just narrated to you is a composite of various serial killer descriptions of their own kills during their psychological evaluations.

But if you're sitting here going "Jesus fuck, you think I'm some kind of psycho?!" then let's move on to the next part of this experiment. No more gory descriptions, I promise.

No, this one is easy.

You have the ability to kill this person, this horrible person, with the stroke of a pen. You never have to look them in the eyes. You don't have to watch them die. Everything I described above will still happen, of course. You just won't be there.

Will you do it?

If your answer is yes, you still need psychiatric help. Because the normal amount of being willing to kill someone, outside of last-resort self defense, IS ZERO. Soldiers literally have to be trained to overcome that.

If you think sounding like a serial killer is a good idea, something is really fucking wrong with you. Period.

On native-land.ca the only “indigenous territory” in the Middle East is “Palestine”

Unlike every other indigenous territory they show “Palestine” has the exact same “traditional borders” as the current state of Israel- including the Golan Heights which was not actually part of the British mandate for Palestine (I made a mistake- that’s no the Golan my point still stands though the historic borders of ancient Palestine thus is not (like why don’t they include any of Jordan in the supposed Palestine when Jordan was part of the mandate for Palestine))

Also note how supposedly there are no other indigenous people in the region. No Kurdistan, no Assyria, no Druze region.

This indigenous advocacy group is working to further the aims of a colonial empire.

Colonialism is ok when arabs do it

It gets worse if you look at the source page for Palestine, unfortunately.

Also zooming out, how on earth are caucasus blank. Like no one cares about Armenians? Armenians aren't an ancient ethnic group with ancient connection to their land? Armenians aren't an ancient ethnic group--indigenous to the caucacus--that were colonized by Russia and genocided by the Ottomans? Really? This map is bullshit.

And jews are indigenous to Judea; the Romans renamed it Palestine. When. they. colonized. Us.

Also Siberia and Central Asia (looking at it again all of Asia where is Tibet) feel strangely empty to me?

And what about Crimea? Crimean Tatars are an indigenous people.

Or you know Tatarstan?

What's funny is that for The Hausa of Nigeria they cite the Joshua Project which is an evangelical site focused on conversion of all non evangelic christian people

For reference here is what they say about the Hausa

Idk about you guys but really???

Yeah, even ignoring the massive red flag that is the anachronistic palestinian claim... You can poke holes big enough to sink an aircraft carrier on their claims, and their coverage is more spotty than service in a horror movie.

Where the hell are the Circassians, for example?

You are not safe from this. You, the person reading this, are not safe from this. No matter how educated or open minded you think you are, you are not safe from this. The moment you think you are safe from it is the moment you become the most susceptible.

Its similar to why you cannot put bad people in a class of their own. The moment you do that you stop being able to see the bad things that the people closest to you do a la "my best friend couldn't have said that racist thing, they're not evil."

The moment you think you are immune from this type of backslide into right wing nonsense is the moment you stop questioning yourself enough to keep yourself from backsliding into right wing nonsense a la "I mean im not antiscience, im vaccinated, I just think that fluoride in our water supply is imparting children's ability to learn as fast as they otherwise could without it."

Remember, being progressive means progressing, its about always moving forward. The moment you rest on your laurels and stop putting in effort to keep the progression is the moment you start becoming left behind.

"New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncouth;          They must upward still, and onward, who would keep abreast of Truth..."

Hot take, but cis people have gender identities. They aren't the gender they identify as because of their genitalia or what their birth certificate says. They're only cis because they identify with a gender and it happens to match their government documentation. Cis men aren't men because they're "obviously" men for having a penis. They're men because they identify as men. It's the self-identification that dictates this, not any other factor, even for cis folks. And we should be framing it this way. A cis man identifies as a man and a cis woman identifies as a woman. There is no automatic or inherent gender.

You are not "born a boy/girl." Infants don't have a gender. You acquire gender when you identify as it. No such thing as "biologically a man/woman."

"I don't identify as anything, I'm a man."

It sure sounds like you identify as a man, bud.

Giving a brownie to cis folks who rb this.

Gonna admit the "this isn't a hot take it's obvious" comments from a dozen or so people are grating on my nerves, so I'm gonna address that.

Just say you've never had an actual conversation with a cis person outside of a very leftist circle lol. Obvious to you. To you, fellow trans person. I wish I got paid every time I had to hear a cis person say they don't have a gender identity or don't "identify" as anything they just "are" a man or a woman.

Sometimes you have to stop and ask yourselves what group of people a post is mainly directed at.

I really don't understand how "without getting kudos or comments a fanfiction author is going to assume that people who clicked their fic didn't like it" became a controversial take.

I don't know why some people think an author should imagine, or guess that people who click their fic enjoyed it it when nobody is telling them that.

If you're re-reading a fic constantly, or leaving it up in your tab so that it re-loads every day for a hundred days the author is not going to know that unless you tell them. They'd love to hear it. It would make their day.

And if you don't tell them you liked their fic, there's no reason for them to assume you did.

Writers on AO3 when they see the hit counter on their fic go up and get an email that someone left kudos or a comment: Yay! People like my story! This made my day!

Writers on AO3 when they see the hit counter on their fic go up but the number of kudos/bookmarks/subscriptions/comments doesn't change: Oh. People are reading my story, but I guess they didn't like it.

Writers on Tumblr when they see notifications on their story: Yay! People are liking my story! Oh, somebody left a nice comment! Oh, they even reblogged it! That was so sweet of them!

Writers on Tumblr when they see 0 notes on their story: Nobody read it.

Also, just for fun, here are the stats for my fanfic with the most hits:

Almost half of the comments are my replies, so there are actually 27 individual comments. And almost 27,000 hits. So, basically a 1:10,000 ratio.

Do you still think writers are being unreasonable?

While 27 comments may not be much when someone gets them gradually, it's a lot to read through to make sure you're not contributing to unintentional spam.

unintentional spam?? I'm sorry this is just such a foreign idea to me.

I promise you there are vanishingly few authors who would be upset to receive more than one comment saying the same (positive) things!

If I receive multiple emails of comments on something I write, there is an actual zero percent chance of me being upset by it. Literally would make my day, week, month. Love your authors! Comments do not have to be detailed analysis - something as simple as “<3” conveys so much. (In fact, the very first comment I got on AO3 was “<3” and I treasure it.)

Spam your local fic author with comments. You never know what could happen.

They might fall in love with you.

Happened to the Goob author. Happened to me.

I made one of my dearest friends this way. And I bet she'd be completely unsurprised to know I still have her comments saved.

Tell 'em how long it's been, @sparklingganymede.

I always feel like my comments are terribly bland but I try to write one anyway. Most of the time it’s just stuff like “I really enjoy this.” But I hope it still makes a different

I assure you quite warmly and sincerely that it does.

I value comments much more than kudos.

"Ao3 should allow multiple kudos" "I want to be able to leave more than one kudos"

COMMENT ON THE FUCKING FIC

I SWEAR TO GOD NO ONE COMMENTS MUCH NOW WHEN THE ONLY WAY TO SHOW APPRECIATION FOR A SINGLE CHAPTER IS COMMENTING AND I AM NOT HAVING THIS BULLSHIT BE LIKE TIKTOK WHERE NO ONE EVER COMMENTS POSITIVITY

FOR FUCKS SAKE JUST COMMENT ON THE FUCKING FIC YOU DON'T NEED A MULTIPLE KUDOS BUTTON YOU NEED ACTUAL WORDS

TRUST ME ON ANY WEBSITE OR APP I POST COMMENTS AND WORDS ARE 10X BETTER THAN ANY PLAIN LIKE AND WORDLESS REBLOG IF YOU LIKE SOMETHING LEAVE WORDS

COMMENT

FICS

hey folks if you have an android phone: google shadow installed a "security app".

I had to go and delete it myself this morning.

And several others as well. Clear data, disable, uninstall if you can.

It wasn't on my homepage, but it WAS in my list of apps in my settings, for those that can't find it. It took me 30 seconds max to remove it.

Had to remove it myself.

I've been trying to keep this blog more fandom-focused, and keeping political stuff to my main. I don't always succeed, but I try.

But for a moment, let me just get up on my soapbox and give a quick message.

I am a Jew. I am a "Zionist" in the direct and explicit sense of "I support Jewish self-determination and sovereignty in our historic homeland from which we were exiled" and nothing more. I do not support Netanyahu, and would dearly love to see him jailed. I am not an Israeli citizen. I feel that war crimes have been committed during Israel's war with Hamas, and those crimes should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

However, I view accusations of a "genocide" against the Palestinians by Israel is nothing more than Holocaust Inversion, and an insult to survivors of actual genocides. Were there horrible, terrible things happening? Yes. Was it a deliberate and organized attempt to wipe out the Palestinians? No. You can tell, because they're still alive.

And the only way for people to square that circle of "Why are there any Palestinians still alive if Israel is trying to kill them all, given the military power Israel has?" was to engage in disgusting antisemitic conspiracy-mongering.

If any of this offends, there's the Unfollow button.

Now, I bring this up presently because I got a lot, and I mean a LOT, of antisemitism aimed at me from people I once considered acquaintances, associates, even good and dear friends.

One of my less... salutatory character traits is that I hold grudges. I'm not as bad as my father, who holds grudges until they die of old age and then has them stuffed and mounted, but it's something of concern to me.

That being said, when I see on my activity page a notification for a New Follower, and I recognize the name as someone who accused me of supporting genocide, or even personally killing Palestinian children...

Yeah.

I feel that grudge is warranted.

It's the audacity of coming back after more than a year and expecting everything to be fine when they called me a monster, a murderer, and worse, where I basically go, "Nope. You can fuck right back off."

To many of them, this was a fandom.

To me, this was personal on a level they cannot comprehend.

Aww. This is so heartwarming. I especially love how it specifically goes against the old transphobic gotcha about bones.

That being said, does no one else have ANY questions on why they are going through the effort to ressurrect random millenarian skeletons?

Sometimes tweeter people know their stuff- this is the right kind of toxic angst I want to read.

Shipping doesn't mean you think it's good, it means you think it's interesting.

And sometimes, the story that interests you is an insanely nasty trainwreck of a greek tragedy that would make Oedipus look healthy.

Some people just want to watch the world burn, and that's ok.

Many of those convicted of storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, have celebrated the pardons or commutations that they received this week from President Trump.
Not Pamela Hemphill. A retired drug and alcohol counselor who lives in Boise, Idaho, she pleaded guilty in January 2022 to a misdemeanor offense for entering the Capitol during the riot and was sentenced to 60 days in prison and three years of probation.
She said she did not want a pardon.
“Absolutely not,” Ms. Hemphill said in an interview on Wednesday. “It’s an insult to the Capitol Police, to the rule of law and to the nation. If I accept a pardon, I’m continuing their propaganda, their gaslighting and all their falsehoods they’re putting out there about Jan. 6.”
Ms. Hemphill, 71, who was called “MAGA Granny” in some news headlines, has said that she no longer supports Mr. Trump or believes his lie that the 2020 election was stolen. She said that a therapist had helped change her view of the attack by telling her she was “not a victim of Jan. 6; I was a volunteer.”
“I lost my critical thinking,” she said on Wednesday, reflecting on her involvement in the riot and the “Stop the Steal” movement. “Now I know it was a cult, and I was in a cult.”
Her wish to reject the pardon was previously reported by The Idaho Statesman. Ms. Hemphill said she had spoken with a lawyer about spurning the grant of clemency but had not taken any legal action to do so.
It is not clear that she can legally reject the pardon.
“It would be a novel act to file a court case to reject a pardon of a misdemeanor, in part because of the low stakes,” Mark Osler, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, said in an interview.
There is some legal precedent, however, suggesting that any such request could face an uphill battle.

Always a reblog

I'm an atheist but also, I feel like G-d being a writer would resolve basically every atheist objection to the idea of god, from the actual philosophical arguments against the concept (the omnipotence paradox, the problem of evil, et c.), to the really specific yet also surface-level Bible nitpicks

"How was there a day-night cycle before there was a sun?" actually, when you're worldbuilding it can actually be a good idea to figure out things like your planet's rotation and orbit, or the atmospheric composition and the main surface liquid, and only then deal with the cosmic neighborhood so you can make sure you have a star that works well with all that (i mean, assuming you're worldbuilding the whole planet, there's nuances to this stuff)

This is not an actual view that I hold nor an actual interpretation of Genesis that I subscribe to but I do think it's philosophically satisfying and also kinda funny

This is actually one reason among many that I believe G-d exists and also is a computer programmer, which very neatly explains "if G-d is so good, why doesn't He fix [insert terrible thing here]?" Well, because as any programmer can tell you, G-d could get rid of Ebola...except Ebola wasn't supposed to do what it's doing in the first place, and now it's a fucking load-bearing coconut and if He intervenes rather than watching and hoping we figure it out then half of Morocco is going to become a glacier. He could deal with poverty...except doing so, for reasons He still hasn't fully troubleshot, will make the planet stop spinning. He could fix these problems! He'd just have to break a bunch of other stuff first and the stuff that would break would be far worse than the stuff that's broken! And that's where we come in. We're the repair program. Whether we're doing our job or have turned full Trojan virus is yet to be seen. But we're here, to at least try.

I'm an atheist, but I kinda half believe this. Except that, not being Jewish, I don't need to stick to one God, so in my view there is a committee. Overworked, over budget, over deadline, and with varying quality levels of their work. So evolution is driven by backward compatibility, and the stars and planets were probably done by someone who is very precise, and life gets worked on by fuzzier Gods, and one of them is super into beetles. The human eye is a masterwork of engineering and also so fucked up that we can see our own optic nerve sometimes. Bipedal humans have so many problems due to our bipedalism it's a miracle we work at all -- but bipedalism solved so many problems and enabled us to be near-unique in the animal kingdom. Bees are fucking amazing. Whoever came up with the wasp life cycle or Cordyceps doesn't have a lot of compassion.

See, here's the interesting thing. What we know of Jews when we were still kinda-sorta-just-Canaanites is that the very very earliest Jews 4000 years ago were polytheistic. That's probably why one of the names of G-d is plural.

So from my perspective, the other programmers pissed off and left this one guy we call Adonai (that's not The Name but you know who I mean) who's now trying to run the whole damn show by himself.

Well, it went monolathric right after, so one could see it as Him as being a dev that was put in charge of work worthy of a several dozen-strong team, all by Himself.

And not only did He manage to get it working, but it is free of the more... Egregious game breaking bugs. Is it flawless work? No. But anyone else's work would've imediately crashed and burned, while His kept running indefinitely without major issues.

(TLDR: Seeing G-d as a blatantly overworked, yet flawlessly effective programmer that was theoretically in charge of the Canaanite Pantheon's project, just for literally everyone else to be a no-show, may be blatantly heretical, but is not nonsensical, and certainly is funny. They were there, but they didn't do a thing, so He ain't sharing credit.)

Media literacy is at an all time low

Just saw a post that said Kojima games have no symbolism or meaning beyond, "It looks cool".

Kojima is the worst fucking creator you can apply that logic to because characters will sometimes break the 4th wall to tell you what it explicitly means

Solid snake looking directly at the camera: genetics do not dictate one’s life, nuclear proliferation is bad, the advent of advanced technology is making it more and more difficult to differentiate truth from propaganda, borders and nations are fake, the war economy is a blight on the earth, the military industrial complex is a meat grinder that targets children and my dad’s boyfriend is a whore

A billion guys on Twitter for some reason: how apolitical and extremely heterosexual of you

Like, Metal Gear has all the subtlety of an air raid siren, while Revengeance has the subtlety of the air raid proper.

You could NOT be less subtle.

Conservative politics are an incubator for the worst people to manipulate the dullest of minds.

Conspiracy theories give the D-student oxygen.

We were all told as kids, "don't use Wikipedia as a source." But for the love of god, please support wikipedia. It provides so much free knowledge to the public. It is a public resource. I've seen how fast y'all will fund AO3. Do the same for Wikipedia.

Now, I have many, MANY grievances with Wikipedia. But no matter how flawed it is, having Wikipedia is better than not having Wikipedia.

(Still, don't use it as a source, nor be cheeky and say you used wikipedia's sources. Actually READ those sources, if you can.)
