Cog's Corner

@greenmagic-oilspill / greenmagic-oilspill.tumblr.com

A Final Fantasy blog (which used to be about FFXIV roleplay but who am I kidding it’s just my personal/general FF blog now) that's totally about a goblin tinkerer named Cogflox Twinklygears and her eight "assistants." {Baithin Alberona} {Azionne Melisandre} {Edge Marbrand} {Talon Oakes} {Granny Moss} {Linini Mooglesworn} {Siz'ir Johcandalo} {Yue Dustdreamer} All on Balmung!

Gonna make a pinned post I guess

Name: Matt, sometimes I use Cogs (as in a XIV OC, Cogflox), Baithin, or Flibbertigibbi on other sites though

On tumblr since: like 2010 (🤮)

Currently writing: Opera Omnia: Opus Divinitas, a fanfic continuing the story where Dissidia Opera Omnia left off at the end of Act 4. Also dabbling in some original fiction.

Hi! This is my tumblr where I mostly reblog posts about various FF games and occasionally yell about them in the tags. I have played every single main game and almost every spinoff and I genuinely love them all. Occasionally you’ll see other fandom posts but it’s mostly FF.

Favorite games: XIV, X/X-2, and XII

Currently playing: FF Explorers, last played FFXIV Dawntrail

I’m also a bit known for Distorted Reality, an Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfic.

XIV characters: Edge Marbrand, Baithin Alberona, Azionne Melisandre, Granny Moss, Talon Oakes, Linini Mooglesworn, Siz’ir Johcandalo, Yue Dustdreamer (Balmung), and also Pachi Jovas, Majv Saga (Zalera). I also used to be Gogonegi Momonegi, but he has been retired.

FF games I still need to play/finish: Dirge of Cerberus, Lightning Returns (mostly done), Dissidia Duodecim (mostly done), FFXV Comrades DLC, My Life as a King/Darklord, Chocobo Fables, FF Explorers, Vagrant Story (I’m counting it)

Sorry, I do not have a consistent tagging system because I’m just too lazy.

“gale is disabled with chronic pain” i say into the mic. the crowd boos and jeers.

“no she’s right” a voice calls from the back. i look up. it’s gale dekarios himself.

One of the many things I love about this game is that MOST of our companions are disabled in one way, shape, or form. This is appropriate for a story so much about bodily autonomy and its limits, a story that begins with a quest for a cure. Our companions' disabilities vary dramatically from more metaphorical to more literal, more chronic to more acute, disabilities of the body vs. mind vs. a bit of both. Likewise, each companion varies on whether the happy ending for them is cure for the disability or care for the disability and whether that disability is treated as inherently traumatic or as a neutral fact about the body and mind. The result is a game with a very nuanced and thorough exploration of disability, one that I think deserves more love. Some companion disability breakdowns under the read-more, because apparently I am obsessed with this.

I love Soken’s music and memes as much as the next FFXIV player but you WILL start to respect Takafumi Imamura so help me god. If among your favorite tracks are Scream, Blinding Indigo, One Amongst the Weary, or Wrath of the Harrier, that’s his work. I suspect he did a lot of the composing for Dawntrail’s dungeon themes, especially Vanguard has his flavor. Daiki Ishikawa also has composed multiple incredible songs (tho I personally vibe w Imamura more). Soken is a legendary composer but there’s a reason their in-house music production is the trifecta. All three of them consistently bring their A game, and many of the tracks dubbed the best in the game are the work of two or all three of them.

one of Daiki ishikawa's notable tracks in dawntrail is the dungeon theme for The Skydeep Cenote ('Lost in the Deep') because it gets used several times in the story too! definitely one of my favorites on the DT soundtrack:

LONG POST AHEAD!!

Finally can post my pieces for the Dissidia Opera Omnia zine! For who that don't remember, or didn't know, Crystal Memoria is a zine made to appreciate the game Dissidia Opera Omnia, where we had a bunch of characters from almost all Final Fantasy series, and unfortunately was shut down on 2024...Thanks to everyone's collaboration, we managed to raise $1000 to donate to Able Gamers. So now I will show you what I've made.

In my first piece I wanted to draw my fav team to play in the game. Those beautiful women destroyed almost all bosses in the game, they were so much OP! I loved them, and I miss them...

My second piece is this one, some of the music squad! This one was really difficulty. I had so many thumbs, but none of them were good enough... But in the end I found a good composition for them, and an easy one, but it was finally made!

With those two pieces I wanted to show they interacting. Just in a Dissidia game I could see my fav characters talking with each other. Rinoa's LD with Yuna made me cry the first time I saw it. Love the scene where the monks do a competition, partners that I didn't saw coming, Selphie and the others doing a movie together and THE FUCKING WARRIOR OF LIGHT, the first Warrior of Light of the series, acting in the movie and taking it very serious. lol! There was so many other interactions that I wanted to see...

My sticker was of Lulu. We wanted to do the stickers like the emotes in game, so we picked up the characters that didn't had emotes. It was really fun doing this one. I am venturing myself in doing some stickers nowadays, and it was a good training! It turned out small, but as I said, I was training lol I still have a lot to learn.

And those are my pieces for the Collab that we did for the Zine, it was like a big poster with other characters painted by the other artists. Selphie and King for this one! Loved King charging his guns! I used them a lot too. Wanted to have more time and draw more characters for the collab, but I think I showed my appreciation for the game nonetheless!

Tried to draw more characters besides FFVIII, since it was Dissidia theme. I think for this I did a good job lol But still, I am a little guilty for not having draw Quistis lol It was also difficulty to put ideas into paper. I had so little time to do those, but I wanted to do more for this game...

But either way, I am really grateful and glad to have participated in this zine with a lot of other amazing artists! I learned so much that I tought I've really know, really helped me grow! I am really proud of our work! And I hope Dissidia can come back one day.

so FF: Record Keeper has full battle sprites for a lot of characters (vaguely in the style of the FF6 sprites). This includes status effects so there are some true gems here in the FF4 set including

tiny golbez

ethereal moonlight frog (regular and DS remake colorways)

festival yukata gang, including a glimpse at how insane super famicom cecil's hair looks when you remove the circlet

tellah's average mood

and my personal favorite

the cooler edward
