Hello, my name is Angle!

I have an ongoing comic series “The Devil is a Handsome Man” (TDIAHM) updating only on Patreon

I also draw BG3 related things and my durge character Cae

Other than that, you’ll see me doodle whatever I feel like, whatever tickles the neurons

I love the solid black shading in your work, what inspirations did you look at when developing it?

I'm not sure there's a specific name for the technique, but I really want to try my hand at it. Lately I feel like I've been so caught up in color, my line art needs some love, lol

I’m not a professional but I believe what you’re referring to is inking skill. For me, it’s a combination of growing up with and loving comic books/manga and continually not having confidence in my own coloring skills.

When I was younger- western comics had only just started being digitally colored. Before that, the standard was either black and white or solid color shading. So that surely kicked off the way I tend to line/shade things. I still look back at some of the big western names from time to time- Joe Sinnot, Frank Miller, Mark Farmer, just to name a couple. But for manga (which was probably a bigger influence to me) there’s wayyy too big of a list

If you’re intent on honing that skill: what I think is really important is to first completely enjoy a piece of art, without the intention of studying it. If it stands out to you, go back and figure out WHY you connected with it. When you finish a comic- pick apart what makes it work. Note where the shadows fall, the line weight for certain scenes, the use of action lines, blank spaces, etc etc

Inking *can* be forgiving. It may not entirely matter if everything is “in the right place”, because humans’ eyes tend to try to fill in the gaps. For example you can go the route of entirely blacking out sections of a subject. Inking can also be extremely unforgiving and showcase your inability to understand lighting and contrast 🤪

⬆️ Note that I wouldn’t use this particular drawing in a standard panel setting. Because of the harsh lighting/contrast it gives a serious tone and would be reserved for an intense scene

Coloring this type of lineart has also proven to be difficult in my experience and experimentation. Maybe this is just me, but I think more saturated colors compliment it well

However, this level of detail suits a one-off illustration better. I can’t imagine coloring an entire comic in this style unless there was a whole ass team working on it 😅

My god you capture so much character in your expressions it’s so compelling!!!

And biggest Karlach go brr so hard my brain is cooked

Thank you!!

Expressions are really important to me, so I super appreciate the compliment! I try to push them a bit more on the cartoony side

@hellothisisangle , thanks you for giving us the template for this! and thanks you @kawareo for giving me the idea to do this (saw your version with Strike, and I love it, so, thanks)

It's a bit of a interesting concept to make, so, when I saw this challenge, I couldn't resist, so there they are!

first of all, as you see, green and red are HUGE part of all of version of Jacq (because I love those color). the colors topical of the races are a bit off, because Bhaal know shit about them.

His background doesn't change, he is raised by a human woman and a hobgoblin for 6 years until the cult take him back. he still became a druid after the tadpole (part of my canon), but the classes before it are differents.

His personality doesn't change a lot, but there are parts of it that got more prominent depending on the race.

here we go:

Lolth-sworn Drow: (cleric of the death domain) similar to his tiefling form, he is a pretty big guy, his skin is a weird shade of green, very different from the others drows. he's a bit more calm and suave than the original version.

Forest Gnome: (ranger gloom stalker) this little guy he's the most composed of them all, and the most malicious. He is quite tall for a gnome, but all version of Jacq are quite bigger than the normal, so is to be expected.

Ghit: (monk of the way of the shadow) this little shit is sassy, and is not afraid to show it. as a ghit raised in Baldur's Gate, a lot of people were curious about him, but this version of Jacq is an isolationist, he just disappeared when people got to close (the society of brillants wanted to study him, but it didn't go well).

Human: (paladin oathbreaker) oh, he was a paladin of Bhaal, before the tadpole, and after that, without even knowing, became a oathbreaker because he is nice with people. he is like the original version, even if a bit more grumpy.

Orc: (sorcerer draconic bloodline) same as the original version, but more chill. he is a mountain of an half orc, really intimidating but nice guy inside.

High Elf: (bard of the college of swords ) ohhhh, he is charming as hell this guy, and a bit arrogant. he prefer the violin and the arp as instruments, and he is a good dancer. he is the least bigger of them all, but he is freaking tall and creepy.

Mountain Dwarf: (rogue assassin) found it funny that he is a REAL cannibal, because is a dwarf who eat others dwarfs , lol. he is a proud little guy, who stab people just because. Gale go crazy because of that.

Black and green Dragonborn: (barbarian berserker) should I explain how this motherfucker is a big intimidating machine of death ? the biggest Dragonborn in circulation, he can transform in a real dragon if he want, and he bite. it became a competition with Astarion for how many people they bite.... he is very intelligent despite been barbarian.

so, here we are.

Raphael eyes OP here - Thank you for sharing the artistic reason. The comic style and distinguishing between characters makes. I like it. I’m sorry if the question put you on guard!

Late reply, but I’d just like to say to everyone that you can’t offend me with genuine questions/comments! Unless it’s some truly horrific shit that would obviously result in a block, but seriously I welcome criticism and debate

Online inflections are difficult to get across and understood accurately! Overall, I’m a pretty unserious person, I’m here to have fun drawing what I like and enjoy the company of people with like-minded interests :)

*I do tend to rewrite canons and change the visions/designs within fandoms. It’s supposed to all be in good fun, not a slight against the original writers or artists
