gonna be real I have no earthly idea. I hope it'll be something cool that will seem to come out of nowhere but when we look back it was foreshadowed the entire time

Hey, so I saw your post about Suselle and I found it really interesting about what you said about it seemingly being the meta-textual “canon or approved ship by Gaster” or something like that and it reminded me that there’s lots of ppl who also believe that Suselle might be averted as a sort of subversion. Idk how to feel about it, since I’m not a shipping person myself, but I’m genuinely curious how’d feel about both if Suselle did become canon or not since I love your analysis of the characters.

well the thing is, I don't know! it's still too early in the story for me to make a judgement like that. but if I had to guess I'd say our vague options are that either it will be a subversion in that they don't end up together, or it will be a subversion in that they DO end up together but the nature of their relationship has changed drastically based on story events. given that all this cutesy flirty stuff has already started happening in just chapter 2 of 7(?) there's a lot of room left for it to go some crazy places.

for my part, I don't super care about shipping in this instance either. the only outcome that would disappoint me is if suselle is endgame but in a way I find boring. like if nothing really happens to deepen or complicate the relationship and it stays at a baseline "they're teenagers who like-like each other". I really don't think that's going to happen though. so like, right NOW suselle isn't that interesting to me in comparison to some other relationships, but I fully expect it to get more interesting to me as the story progresses. if I had to pick an ideal endgame ship at this point I guess it would be krusie? but I also think none of these kids are really ready for a serious commitment like that and even if two of them start dating by the end, it doesn't necessitate they'll be together forever.

Your last two analysis posts seemed really interesting and eloquent. May I ask then, what you think of Berdly's crush on Susie?

Avatar

erm hold on I watched a really good video that talked about this recently. this one. I basically agree with everything that person said and have nothing of my own to add. it definitely tracks that berdly is a person who interprets any positive or affection feelings between peers as having to be romantic, especially when between a boy and a girl, and that he would view his changing opinion on susie as himself falling for her. but also if it turns out the crush is genuine I still think that's fine. like most things about berdly I found it annoying at first but came around to finding it funny. I think it's both a good vehicle for jokes and character interaction and says something interesting about berdly and his relationships.

not as relevant but I do think there's something to how susie is becoming this like, hot commodity. everyone wants susie. I don't know what that "something" is yet but I'm filing it away for later

please stop sending me messages about ena: dream bbq I've gotten three messages about it today already. it looks very cool and I'll play it when I feel like it but I'm not very concerned with checking things out the moment they're relevant. also I'm a contrarian bitch and the more anybody tells me to do something the less I want to

I wanna say I was happy to see you Drew Kikaider and I know you didn’t enjoy the manga but low key if you have the time I would recommend the anime, while it’s short it genuinely fixes most of the issues with the manga- but I get if your not into it enough to care I just thought I recommend it cause it low key gets overshadowed but it’s a good adaptation. Thanks for drawing the robo blorbos either way ❤️

hey, that's no fair, haha! I never said I didn't enjoy the manga, completely opposite actually. see👇

and I liked it enough to draw fanart, after all. I had a lot of criticisms, sure, but sometimes dissecting something's flaws can be just as fun and helpful as discussing why it's good. and there's a lot else to like about kikaider even if I didn't think the writing and pacing were always fantastic.

leading off of that- what if I told you I'd already started watching the anime lol. I'm being slow at it (especially since I've been occupied watching the figure skating world championships all week....) but so far I absolutely agree with you, I think it's a lot more polished and focuses on character writing in a way the manga needed to do more of, as well as actually discussing the concepts brought up rather than just kind of looking at the audience and going "so that sucks, right?" the manga definitely succeeded in making me want to seek out a version of the story that feels like it wants to be told (I have in no way researched this but just from how it was written I got the feeling ishinomori didn't really enjoy writing kikaider). I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it.

Pls(jk no pressure I am just interested) talk about how noelle relationship with Kris contrast with Noelle relationship with Susie

no problem, I think it's pretty straightforward! it's basically just the exciting but dangerous unknown vs the comfortable but stifling known. susie is "the new girl", she came from outside hometown and seemingly didn't arrive until after the dreemurr-holiday split. in contrast, kris and noelle are not only old childhood friends, their family histories are so intertwined that up until dess's disappearance they might as well have been one family, and there's no indication that either have ever lived anywhere but hometown (in fact when you think about mrs. holiday being the mayor and asgore the (former) chief of police, they were almost like the matriarch and patriarch of hometown). when kris and noelle are alone together, noelle seems to think and talk almost exclusively about the past, while with susie she's focused on her own desires and dreams.

Any specific thoughts on Noelle’s seemingly one sided crush on Susie? Ur analysis are always real neat

Avatar

hm! well I kinda already talked about this but only in a tag essay like 2 1/2 years ago (here) so I can get into it again.

I think noelle's crush on susie reveals a lot about noelle as a person, though the story and framing so far have kind of conditioned us to just look at it as a surface level "omg mean tough girl x sweet shy girl! lesbians!!" and maybe even subconsciously connect it to alphys/undyne and just brush it off as the type of wholesome relationship toby likes writing. I also don't think the crush is necessarily one-sided! you could argue that susie felt pressured into saying what she did on the ferris wheel, but susie is all about breaking the rules and doing whatever she wants so that wouldn't make much sense to me. her responses seemed very genuine. it could turn out to be a fleeting feeling or susie mistaking a desire to be friends as a desire for romance, but I don't really have enough information to speculate much on that yet.

back to noelle, pre-chapter 2 noelle's attraction to susie seems far more based in fantasy than anything, kind of objectifying susie's violence. which is fine, she's a teenager, it doesn't make noelle a bad person, it just indicates that the crush is very shallow to start off. susie is also a symbol to noelle, someone she definitely sees as representing freedom and defiance, which is something she craves. noelle does end up very open to the possibility of getting to know susie as a real person once she learns susie is "nice" but her priorities are still more with her own feelings than susie's.

this is tricky to talk about as an adult, so first I'd like to remind everyone that I have Been a teenage girl and I remember very clearly what it was like, haha. anyway I would argue that noelle's interest in susie is also undeniably sexual, even if she doesn't fully realize it. I think we all kind of know that but it's uncomfortable to just say in plain language. (this is an aside but I think the way toby implies this from noelle's dialogue and internal monologue is REALLY smart from a writing perspective, it leads the brain there without getting weird about it.) in addition to freedom, susie also represents adulthood to noelle in that way. she represents the future, one where noelle can fully express herself. at the same time, noelle associates the feeling of fear with being protected by somebody else in her childhood, the past. susie is "the good kind of scary", both sexually exciting, an "adult" feeling, and nostalgically comfortable, a "child" feeling. susie could be the bridge between past and future that noelle, who is notoriously frozen in her own childhood, needs to move forward. I think that could apply even if the two don't end up together, just from noelle working through her own feelings about it all.

I could also get into the implications of suselle being "the narrative's approved ship" or how noelle's relationship with susie contrasts her relationship with kris, or even how we're conditioned to see lesbian relationships as either inherently more "wholesome" or the taboo and exciting "toxic yuri", but this is getting really long already. idk where it all will end up going but I think theres already a lot to dive into if you look past the surface!

Do you still make fanmixes? I remember ADORING the art you would make for them as well as the amount of thought to stay in line with the characters

haha well, sort of. I still make playlists like, constantly, I have hundreds of them, but since there isn't really a place where people can rate and leave comments anymore I mostly just make them for myself. which means they're very haphazard, meant to be put on shuffle rather than listened to in order, and hours long since they're more for bg music while I'm drawing than anything. I can share a few of my favorites with you though!

bad relationship masterpost (I have been adding to this playlist for ten years now LOL)

these last two actually are polished and in order 8tracks-style:

also just feel free to dig through my spotify if u want, I have over 700 playlists at this point some of which are based on characters or stories I like but a lot are just based on moods, concepts, or even to help with my own writing. the ones I like best tend to have actual cover art added. all my old 8tracks mixes are also buried in there somewhere!

came across ur kriselle waltzing comic and i got blasted with how that post rewired my brain chemistry like 2 years ago genuinely the comic of all time to me.

i genuinely love any analysis of gender roles as it applies to characterizations because as much as we thing it’s progressive to ignore gender bias in tropes i don’t think it IS progressive if even possible, and the characters in deltarune are forced into SUCH traditionally gendered rpg roles throughout the game (even though these roles don’t often match up to their actual gender identity, but the identity doesn’t really matter as far as the narrative is concerned, just the role). but they aren’t like. tropes or stock characters; their complexity means these roles don’t really work unless the narrative/player/story enforces it. i think the game is largely about identity and lack of autonomy so when we get moments of subtext that helps give actual clarity towards how the “rpg setting” is completely separate from but forced upon the in game world, such as the tea showing that kris loves susie but not ralsei and the people in town pointing out how kris is acting off, it makes for a REALLY good puzzle.

it’s pretty late so this might all be nonsense but thanks for completely recontextualizing how i see deltarune <3

(sorry for taking so long to respond to this) brooooo yeah absolutely!!!! "as much as we think it's progressive to ignore gender bias in tropes i don’t think it IS progressive if even possible" EXACTLY!!! it's fun to be like what if the woman was the hero and the man was the damsel, what if this but lesbians etc, but at a certain point you gotta start thinking more deeply about it. taking tropes out of their original context doesnt make the context not exist. you dont have to do away with gender-biased tropes entirely but you should still think about why they exist and how we got here (that goes for all other character and story tropes too).

I don't have much else to say I just like, agree with all your points. you got it. and uhhhhh thank you/youre welcome? seriously it means a lot to me! I was not at all the first person to point out the romantic weirdness of the snowgrave route but I'm really glad I chose to take a risk and portray it that clearly and uncomfortably, it's still one of my favorite pieces of fanart I've ever done. watch revolutionary girl utena my final message goodbye
