Getting ready for Hermit-a-Day May 2025!

WELCOME TO HERMIT-A-DAY MAY 2025!

Another year, another Hermit-a-Day May! I'm so thrilled to be able to bring this event to you all for the third year in a row.

THE RULES: 1. Any type of fanwork is welcome so long as it features, or is otherwise inspired by, the Hermit of the day. 2. Tag #hermitaday to have your fanwork reblogged, or submit it directly to the blog (Please note that while we recognize the value of fanworks involving more mature themes, and they can certainly count toward challenge completion if you're keeping track for yourself, content on this blog will be kept "PG-13" so that all may enjoy.). 3. Fanworks for one Hermit posted after the day rolls over to another Hermit's day (per the US Central time zone) will be reblogged in one big queue in June. 4. Traced or stolen work is NOT welcome. If we discover you have posted traced or stolen work, you will be given one chance to delete it and apologize, or you will be blacklisted from the blog. AI-generated/assisted pieces are similarly unwelcome and will not be featured on the blog. 5. We are not interested in seeing captions or tags in which you disparage your art/skills, and will not be reblogging posts where this happens. We're all improving all the time. Be kind to yourselves. 6. Technically not a rule, but we strongly recommend adding alt text or description to all images. Click here to learn more about writing alt text - it's pretty easy!

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE? To show love to every Hermit, from the most to least subscribed, from those who have been on the server from day one to those who only joined this season! And because challenges are fun! And because we are once again out here for a good cause: we're running another fundraiser for Gamers Outreach, featuring art incentives by nine amazing artists. Learn more about our incentives in these posts:

WHO’S RUNNING THIS? Hi! My name is Luna! You can use ze/hir, she/her, he/him, or ro/ros/roseself pronouns for me. My main blog is @as-if-unreal. Helping me out this year is the incredible Mod Sky ( @skyspersonalhell ), who uses any pronouns!

I think the link for the fundraiser in the pinned post isn't working? Tiltify said the page wasn't available when I clicked the link ^^;;

The donation page isn't available yet, it will be made public a few days before the start of the official event on May 1st!

Hi, I'm opening commissions for a bit! I currently have 2 slots open. Please dm me on here if you're interested! If you want something thats not explicitly listed here (like a pet portrait or a reference sheet) don't hesitate to ask and we can discuss that.

The turnaround time should be about 2 weeks, a bit longer for highly detailed illustrations. If the comm needs to be finished by a certain date, you need to inform me beforehand.

For all commissions, but especially for detailed illustrations, it's important that you're detailed with your request and provide visual references if possible.

If you have any questions, send a dm or ask! :)

(also btw just in case someone wants a full-body drawing of a hermit, you should wait until late may and donate 50usd to the hermitaday gamers outreach fundraiser instead, thatll also get you a hermit drawing from me :P)

I've put the HADM '25 calendar on our Bluesky, if you'd like to share the challenge on another platform!

Also in that thread, the following announcement:

I'm excited to announce that by this time next week, I'll be on my way to Michigan to volunteer at Gamers Outreach's Gamers for Giving event! I'm really looking forward to meeting our charity partners in person. Keep an eye on [our Bluesky] if you want to see what I get up to there!

as a first time hermit-a-day-may artist is doing some pieces ahead of time like alright? cause i don’t know if it goes against the whole point of the “day” part i just don’t wanna burn out or not finish a piece

Absolutely! This is why the calendar was posted so early. May is a busy month for a lot of people, so we want to leave y’all some flexibility in how you prepare and participate. All that matters is your fanwork is posted on the correct date (and even that we aren’t terribly inflexible on - if you’re a little behind, well, that’s the point of the June Queue).

Shout out @hermitadaymay for putting on such an awesome event every year, it takes a lot to run an event like that, particularly with the charity involved, so you guys deserve ALL THE KUDOS!!

everyone reading this should think about donating to gamers outreach during the even this year in may too :]

This is so cool! I usually don’t tend to take part in these things because the rules are often unclear, but you’ve made it very obvious which makes it way easier for me to do it! Thanks so much for putting in the effort :D

Thank you! We're trying really hard to be as clear and accessible as possible! Really happy to hear it's paying off, and I hope you have fun!

gah i think it's so cool you all are doing this, especially with the bonus of donating to gamers outreach <33 it's so crazy knowing that such a generally silly event can generate so much money for an amazing cause <333

Thank you! Community is a really powerful force. I’m so grateful to be in a community willing to employ that force for good.

Obviously the donation page isn’t published yet, and won’t be until only a few days before May, but our fundraising goal this year is $3,500 - approximately the total creation, shipping, and setup costs of one GO Kart - and I really think we can do it! Because YOU all are so cool.

Introducing the Raffle Artists of HADM '25!

Hello one more time, Hermitcraft fans! March is almost over... which means Hermit-a-Day May is fast approaching! As we lead up to the April 1st release of this year's schedule, I'd like to take some time to introduce the nine amazing featured artists helping us out with our fundraiser incentives this year!

Today: our Raffle Artists, belmarzi, sand-stinger, FantasyKiri, and ethosiab! The raffle is new to Hermit-a-Day May this year, and we hope you find the prizes we have on offer as cool as we do!

Last year, Hermitcraft fanart and animation legend belmarzi blessed us with an amazing milestone reward animatic - and this year, she's back to kick off our first raffle with a bang! Bel's raffle offering is a commission slot for a digital full-body portrait painting, like this one she did of Cleo:

Next up, from the coolest segment of the streamathon:

Sand is crocheting an amigurumi Jellie plushie for their raffle offering! While we don't have photos of the final product yet, you can check out this post to see Sand's awesome crochet skills in action. Jellie will be a little over a foot long (including the tail) and made of super soft yarn for maximum cuddliness! We will cover up to US$25 shipping to get the plushie to wherever the winner is.

Hermit-a-Day veteran Kiri is offering a commission slot for a full scene of up to eight characters, in a similar style to the example below but a bit smaller-scope (and, presumably, less Moomin-y, but far be it for me to tell you what to do with your commission slot! Maybe Moominhermits is the crossover the world needs.).

Finally, our ninth featured artist this year...

Nic's raffle offering is a commission slot for a three-page comic! He will work closely with you to put to page your favorite canon moment, fanfiction scene, or just whatever plot bunny you have in mind! Here's a shorter comic exhibiting Nic's style:

All raffle entries will be $1 - so, for example, if you donate $10 and select the raffle for Sand's plushie Jellie as your reward, you will get 10 entries toward Jellie! You can donate multiple times and select a different raffle option each time, if you'd like. Note that raffle entries do not stack with Individual Reward commissions - you will have to choose one or the other for any given donation. Remember, all donations go to a good cause: the Hermits' favorite charity, Gamers Outreach!

yknow i never noticed the sheer rareness of images having ids or alt text on this website until i started adding alt text to my art (and trying to remember to add it to any images i post in general, especially text screenshots) and that makes me kinda sad

I feel like a lot of people just don't know how to do it or are intimidated by the prospect. I was too, actually, and I couldn't find any good guides on how to do it (beyond basic formatting) and most guides boiled down to "just describe what you see and important details!" I really wanted to add alt text bc accessibility is important to me, but I would always get kinda stumped on how to do it.

But then I saw this image, I think in a discord server, and I immediately started doing it. It kinda broke the ice for me

Most importantly, give context! If the image you’re writing a caption for is a visual gag, a newspaper comic, or a reaction image, the most important thing is explaining the context so that someone who can’t see the image can still understand the joke!

A visually impaired reader won’t get why everyone is using a photo of a cute kitten as a reaction image to a thread if you get too bogged down in describing unimportant visual details in the background that don’t contribute to the joke’s punchline. You have to straightforwardly tell them that the kitten is making an adorably grumpy face. If you leave that detail out, the image loses its intended meaning, leaving the reader who can’t see it feeling totally lost.

Introducing the Individual Reward Artists of HADM '25!

Hello again Hermitcraft fans! March is almost over... which means Hermit-a-Day May is fast approaching! As we lead up to the April 1st release of this year's schedule, I'd like to take some time to introduce the nine amazing featured artists helping us out with our fundraiser incentives this year!

Today: our Individual Reward Artists, Leopardmask, blocky-tides, and spiderziege!

When you donate $35 or more from May 1st through 11th, Leo will write for you a 200-300 word ficlet on the Hermitcraft-related subject of your choosing! Check out her style on her Ao3!

When you donate $35 or more from May 12th through 21st, Tides will create for you a collage of text and images on the Hermitcraft-related subject of your choosing! Here's some examples of their style:

Last but certainly not least, we have...

When you donate $25 or $50 (or more!) from May 22nd through 31st, Spider will draw for you a Hermit of your choosing! Each price point comes with its own style: for a $25 donation you get a "simple style" piece (left), and for a $50 donation you get a "fancy style" piece (right).

I also want to take this moment to thank Spider for once again granting us use of her art for our daily graphics!

Remember, all donations go to a good cause: the Hermits' favorite charity, Gamers Outreach! But what if you can't donate enough for one of these rewards, or if they just don't catch your fancy? Never fear, we have one more set of reward options coming!

Next time, our last four artists: our brand new RAFFLE team!

Introducing the Milestone Reward Artists of HADM '25!

Hello Hermitcraft fans! March is almost over... which means Hermit-a-Day May is fast approaching! As we lead up to the April 1st release of this year's schedule, I'd like to take some time to introduce the nine amazing featured artists helping us out with our fundraiser incentives this year!

Today: our Milestone Reward Artists, Evil Anvil and Pixiemage!

Anvil will be doing the main part of the milestone reward: a song in her signature quote-remix style celebrating Season 10 of Hermitcraft! As we hit milestones in our fundraiser, she'll add more length and complexity to the song, all the way until we hit our ultimate goal of $3,500, at which point we'll unlock a vocal feature by...

...talented fanwriter and parody musician Pixie!

$3,500 is a lot of money, but I believe we can do it together! Remember, it all goes to a good cause: the Hermits' favorite charity, Gamers Outreach... and not only will you be powering toward the Milestone Reward song with your donations, but other rewards will be available to you personally as well! Can you guess what they'll be?

Next time, three more artists: our Individual Reward team!

Hermit-a-Day May March updates!

Hey guys! Mod Luna here! We’ve started getting a few asks looking forward to May so I thought I’d round up some updates into one post.

First off, sorry I’ve been a little unavailable lately! If it’s any excuse, I just went to a con and then got a minor surgery almost back to back (both went very well; both were very tiring). I even saw some Life Series cosplayers! Check out this Pearl and Scar (blue_j12 on xitter)!

The schedule for Hermit-a-Day May has been finalized (barring any surprise new Hermits announced within the next month…) and will be posted at the beginning of April. No early peeks, sorry!

As there are now only 25 Hermits, it is impossible to fit all the bonus days on one day of the week so the 6 bonus days will be distributed as evenly as possible throughout the month - that is, every fourth or fifth day.

Neither Iskall nor Stress have days scheduled in the month, nor will they be welcome as features on bonus days (a slight policy shift from the last time we spoke on this, when we were uncertain about Stress’s inclusion in bonus days).

In less schedule-related news: details about our fundraiser incentives will be published very soon! Start saving now, because you may want to donate multiple times during the month to earn different rewards…
