a journey into sound but the sound isn't there

So the Come On Die Young boxset just got released to coincide with the album's 15th anniversary. It's unfortunate that this record got so much backlash with how different it sounded compared to Young Team, but it's great seeing it get the recognition it so rightly deserves as what I believe, at least, to be Mogwai's finest album.

Anyway, this is a really nice track that comes as part of the 'Appendix' disc of the deluxe boxset. It was originally recorded in the same sessions as CODY at the Chem19 studios and appeared on a Matador compilation that had other great artists like Yo La Tengo, Pavement and Guided By Voices on it.

The song sounds a bit like a slower, more tentative version of New Paths to Helicon 2, but with some rare vocals. It's unfortunate that this wasn't included on the album itself, it sounds like the antithesis of the dark, claustrophobic mood of the album and would've been great as a closer to the trio of Ex-Cowboy, Chocky and Christmas Steps. It has a really nice balance of vocals and guitar and has one of the most amazing crescendos I've ever heard in a Mogwai song. Kind of predates third-wave post-rock even!
