You can call me Nonna 🧿 I'm an adult

a good stepping stone towards stealing from stores is to act really suspicious in stores without stealing. put something in ur bag, walk around, & then take it out in a blind spot. see how often retail workers will just let you go even if they think you're stealing.

i cant properly put this into words but. what is this never ending trend of hating or being suspicious of ppl who find joy or connection in the things that have brought you suffering.

like how most (if not all) terfs believe that womanhood is analogous to suffering/ oppression, they think trans men just want to escape misogyny, and conclude that trans women couldn't possibly actually want to be women, there's gotta be some nefarious plot going on there.

or how ppl with trauma-based DID think endo systems cant be "real" bc that would imply there's something good/ beneficial/ natural about systems.

god forbid if someone aspires to be fat, or be an amputee, have non-conforming genital configurations, etc.

i understand that we latch onto bad experiences, bc they are so easily ignored by ppl with privilege. but im so tired of it bleeding beyond that. being homeless is horrible for so many reasons, but ppl completely and wholly ignore me when i gush about how wonderful my social life was when i was homeless. they dont want to hear it.

yet it's so easy to acknowledge that, yeah office jobs are soul-sucking, but some ppl still want to be office workers bc the cons are worth the pros. there's a million hallmark movies romanticizing rural life & ppl will gladly criticize that, but there's billions of ppl who romanticize city life despite its cons, and there's no one saying you're "appropriating" or "fetishizing" or ignoring the struggles of city life.

why is that? ppl are only allowed to find worth in things that society already finds worthy? that we tolerate non-conformity only when it's accidental/ naturally-occurring?

“Meatless alternatives are getting so good, you should try them! I bet you wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference! In fact….”

Please

Please

Please stop trying to sneak-feed me meat alternatives.

I am willing to prepare and share a vegan meal with you, I’m willing to skip animal products in our group spaces.

Please.

Stop trying to sneak-feed me meat alternatives.

Mycoprotein is fucking cool, vat-grown meat is fucking cool, believe me I am fucking down for figuring out efficient calories and I’m interested in attempting to reduce or eliminate animal agriculture but you wouldn’t want me to sneak-feed you cricket flour, you don’t get to sneak-feed me your stuff.

I wouldn’t mind if you snuck-fed me cricket flour, actually. If cricket flour is indistinguishable from regular flour then sure, go for it.

I really don’t know what the initial gripe is about, though. The anonymous person you quote is not trying to sneak-feed you anything. They outright say “meatless alternative.” Is your problem that they may have GMOs? I genuinely have no idea what your complaint is, because you’re talking about people sneak-feeding you meatless stuff but your pics are all about GMO corn starch or whatever.

I have celiac disease and a corn allergy and a relative who wanted to try to pass off impossible burger as ground beef to prove how good meat alternatives are.

I don’t care about “gmo” and I dont care about the fact that it’s “textured protein” I care about “corn” and “wheat” and I care that people without food allergies rarely know how inescapable some of those allergens are.

“Oh, I checked the ingredients, it doesn’t have corn”

Okay but does it have maltodextrin, modified food starch, xanthan gum, caramel coloring, dextrose, or glucose syrup?

If it does have any of those things do they specifically say “from potatoes,” “from tapioca,” “from cane sugar” or “from rice”?

If it didn’t did you check the manufacturer’s website? If that didn’t say did you call the manufacturer?

Sometimes I’ll use almond or coconut flour as a replacement for wheat flour when I’m cooking. I do not try to pretend that my alternate flour chocolate chip cookies are wheat flour chocolate chip cookies because most people don’t expect to run into coconut or almond when they pick up a chocolate chip cookie. I don’t try to hand them to people, wait for them to eat a cookie, and say “hah, bet you didn’t think gluten free cookies could taste good, huh?” because if I did that to someone with a severe allergy it could kill them, but also because people should have a say in what they’re eating.

I’ve got no problem with beyond beef or impossible burger describing their products as meat alternatives, I’ve got no problem with GMOs or the fact that quorn is made out of a heavily engineered protein. That’s all very neat, actually.

But I do have a problem with people trying to sneakily serve meat alternatives without considering that doing so is shitty for a number of reasons.

Also, insect protein can cause severe reactions to people with shellfish allergies, so that’s another reason not to feed cricket flour to people without telling them.

It might also be against their religious beliefs. I was in therapy with a muslim girl who regularly had people forget/“forget” she ate halal/vegetarian food when she was out on assignment and hours away from any other food option. People who would get McDonald’s and literally come back with just Big Macs. Not even fries. “Oh, we’re getting subs” and somehow they’re from the only sandwich joint in the greater Brussels area that only had ham and pork salami as options, and refused to let people just get veggies and sauce. Might have been malice, might have been ignorance, might have been budget reasons, but the result was a 19-yo going without food for 8 hours.

Got a cousin who can’t have sweet bell peppers. It’s not an allergy, her body treats them like a virus if they make it to her gut. And people respect that. So did her ex-MIL, who was a very sweet and well-meaning woman, but who was also from the boomer ranks of “you can’t live off tomato soup for the rest of your life”. And she couldn’t fathom that it wasn’t an allergy, so she regularly prepared bell pepper dishes with the most common allergy triggers (seeds, skin, ribs) removed and then didn’t say until just before people were about to eat. Her son and Cousin ran out of ways to explain that she could use literally any vegetable but bell pepper.

The number of people who assume that 1) this is a entirely personal choice you made only based on your own preferences, and 2) that is not a good enough reason to exclude certain foods from your life, is staggering.

Oh, and do you know what happens if you do notice someone fed you something else than what they said, or added an ingredient they know you didn’t want?

They throw a tantrum.

You are too sensitive. You ruined their fun. You need to expand your palate. You didn’t die/end up in hospital, so it’s all fine. Honestly, you are such a fussy eater. How were they supposed to know you were really allergic to the food you said would put you in hospital? They put so much effort into making this especially because you were coming over, and this is the thanks they get. It’s just a harmless prank. What are you going to do, just never eat any [pineapple] for the rest of your life? Be reasonable.

Really a core tenant of good bdsm is deciding what emotions you want to evoke in each other. Humiliation, fear, anger, and helplessness are all just as valid goals as comfort, relaxation, and security by way of experiences you want to have. Feeling otherwise overwhelming emotions in a situation you have some semblance of control over can be deeply cathartic, if done properly.
