I believe when Volume 10 returns, it will be animated in Blender instead of Maya
I don't know enough about animation engines to argue but aren't they very close in capabilities?
As someone that uses both, Maya is more industry standard for large scale. So I guess the question would be is if they are going to treat RWBY as a large or small scale operation. Animators would only use Blender if they can't afford Maya since Blender is a free Open-Source program. And while it's not bad (modelers and animators have done wonders with it), it's very limited and importing other kinds of files is a bitch. A lot more indy projects opt for Blender. Rigging is where Maya really thrives since it can incorporate smoother Motion capture abilities and RWBY v1-9 uses A LOT of MoCap in their dialogue driven scenes. Also Maya can use a lot of 3rd party tools.
With CRWBY, they used both 3D Max for most of the character modeling and imported it into their environments built in Maya (at least according to their CRWBY Behind-the-scenes videos). Plus the lighting configuration is so much better in Maya. Viz is backed by 3 established Japanese companies (Shueisha, Shogakukan, and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions.). So it's not like they wouldn't have any funds.
Though it's possible Blender could be in the mix if it's outsourced to South Korea. If they're using any studio in SK, their industry standard is usually Toon Boom Harmony, Animate and After Effects (Adobe Creative Suite) for 2D but for 3D they use a combination of Maya and Blender.
Bottom line is that Blender is much easier to use since they made it more adaptable for beginners. Maya is one of those programs that is a lot harder to learn on your own which is why some go to school to learn this. There are pros and cons for both but again Blender is a tad bit limited.
There's also character sculpting in ZBrush so that's an option or at least use that for sculpting Grimm.
Just some personal thoughts:
One thing I would hate to see is less polygons if they still use 3D to model and animate. Maya uses this rendering program called Arnold and it's pretty sharp and detailed. I'm hoping that Blender can use that same pluggin as well someday because the rendering output is vastly different,
