Inexplicable

@inexplicifics / inexplicifics.tumblr.com

Fell headfirst into the Witcher fandom, and not quite sure what I'm doing. inexplicifics on AO3.

Hello friends!

I am the writer of the Accidental Warlord and His Pack, which is probably how you found me. I am astonished and delighted by how much joy it has brought to everyone, and utterly gleeful at how many people have chosen to come and play in my silly AU. All my fics, Accidental Warlord and otherwise, are available on AO3.

My askbox is open! I am happy to answer most questions (unless they’re spoilers) and I cherish all the asks I get, even if I don’t respond. I am inexplicifics#2690 on Discord, and am always happy to make new friends there. I answer to inexplicifics or inex, and my pronouns are she/her.

If you would like to podfic, remix, make art of, or otherwise play with any of my fic, please feel free, and please do let me know so I can come and squee about it!

FAQ:

  • The goose trick is likely to remain a noodle incident, but many clever people have submitted ideas as to what it could be, all of which are tagged “#goose trick” on this blog. At this point, I think the winning theory is that Ciri is just going down a list of tricks, inventing new ones as the old ones are forbidden.
  • I am probably not going to be writing anything from Warlord!Geralt’s point of view, because I cannot get him to talk to me! Which seems fitting, somehow…
  • I do not have a kofi or a Patreon; the only payment I desire for my fic is happy comments.
  • There is a map of AW AU fans around the world - feel free to send an ask with your location if you want to be added!
  • And there is now a Discord server run by the lovely @serpencexalloid: https://discord.gg/NN3dDgynXU

Works inspired by the Accidental Warlord AU:

This has become such a long list that I’ve moved it all into a spreadsheet! Please let me know if I’ve forgotten anything, or if any of the links don’t work, and go give some love to the amazing writers, artists, singers, and podficcers who have chosen to play in this silly AU!

Love Flung to Catch a Star! Re-reading I saw it mentioned how Kendon of the Crane's hair was ragged short all on one side. What is the explosion that burned his hair off, or what happened there? On the Path or with other Cranes? Is there a rule about how experimental a Crane can be in the middle of a monster hunt? It risks the other Witcher lives too and not the best time to be testing something too new.

He was testing explosive crossbow bolts and one of them exploded a little prematurely! But this was in Crane Valley, because the Cranes don't test new explosives recipes on the Path anymore. As you say, it's rude. They do test new gear in the field, as it were, but only after it's been thoroughly stress-tested in Crane Valley and will probably work as intended.

I'm relistening to the podfic of holding water like a cup and I've just had a thought that is now my favourite new little headcanon. After a good 10 years, when Nosey should be starting to get a little gray and slow he... doesn't. He seems to have gotten the witcher immortality mutagens somehow. Everyone is very confused and a little concerned until Aubrey confesses that he has been kissing the cats little kitty head at least once a day for the last decade and Nosey cleaning his fur must have been enough for just enough of the mutagens to work to make for a very long lived kitty.

Awwwwwww. Who could resist kissing the little kitty head?

I love your AWAU, it’s such a great and fun world and all the details in it make it feel really real and fleshed out. You’ve mentioned a few times that there’s no tapestries or wall decorations in Kaer Morhen, but I can’t help but picture at some point a Witcher making one. Maybe they’re bored and trying a new hobby, or it’s a bet, or they want to impress one of the pretty seamstresses. Mainly I love the idea of Kaer Morhen having no decorations except one random side hallway where there’s exactly one (1) tapestry of like middle school art project skill level showing a bunch of geese.

the first guest to accidentally stumble across it definitely thinks it has to be cursed

Avatar

This is delightful!

I have a few thoughts about bringing tapestries to Kaer Morhen but I love the idea of one random terrible goose tapestry in a corner to baffle everyone.

I had the idea of MBTT Milena running a never-ending kitten fosterage out of her, Lambert's, and Aiden's rooms, and now I keep giggling at the idea of how often they show up somewhere just COVERED in every color of fur.

Also, if Milena ever releases a litter of kittens in the great hall, it will be CHAOS. Worthy of a goose trick, even.

"Oh, you've got an orange kitten! Who's that one for?"

"You know that one Bear with a ginger beard?"

"Oh no, it's going to blend right in!"

"I think that's the point."

Thinking about the AWAU and how the witchers’ new human lovers are all around 20. But, given the Sexually Transmitted Immortality, they could have a nice long relationship with someone older just as easily.

When they’re on the Summer Progress they will meet many people, and now I’m imagining a younger (40-60yo) witcher meeting a widowed noble woman who is older than he is and becoming smitten with her.

That would be thoroughly adorable.

Morvran: I hope you’ll someday become my right hand, like Eskel is to the Warlord

Cahir: I could do that

Me, who has shipped these guys since the first chapter: LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOOOO

Loyal Knight/Benevolent Lord is such a good flavor 😚🤌✨❤️‍🔥 and you do it so well

I think we all know by now how much loyal knight/beloved lord is exactly my flavor! I'm glad I do it well.

Poor Morvran does not know exactly what he's asking at the moment, though...

Rereading MBTT for the nth time and caught something I hadn’t noticed before (because this detail was slipped in the the middle of a sex scene): Aiden dropping peas on the Bears from the rafters?????

(How long DID it take for them to notice someone was deliberately dropping something on them?)

Aiden is a mischievous little shit sometimes!

(Quite a while. Aiden was vastly amused by the number of Bears with peas stuck in their hair.)

Thank you for recommending The Hands of the Emperor. I'm only a little ways in and I have the conflicting desires to devour it as quickly as possible, and to take my time and savor it. It is indeed a very good book!

Read it fast once and again slowly! (And then all the sequels!)

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for the character of Zofia. I'm an older sibling. I was parentified, though not to the same extent. I would do terrible, terrible things for my younger sibling, and if they died, I would probably find my way into an early grave. Zofia is perhaps the first character I have ever seen who would understand that completely. Her love and care and soul-shattering devotion shine through in every single thought and word and action. Her grief makes me cry, and her joy makes me cry harder, and every time I read something with her in it, I feel *seen.* The AWAU is a gift, but Zofia is a treasure. She means more to me than I will ever be able to say. Thank you so, so much.

Avatar

I am so honored that Zofia spoke to you. Thank you for your kind words.

When you wrote in Traptych about Bluebell "purring thunderously against his head like the world’s weirdest hat", it reminded me of my late cat.

We lost her at the end of last year, so the memory is still bittersweet, but for a moment I could feel her warmth against my head when I read this.

Thank you.

Avatar

My condolences on the loss of your cat; may her memory grow more sweet than bitter with time.

Helo, please let me just say that your Invictus series is so so so special to me. I love and re-read it so often that I know it practically by heart and it's the standard I measure all modern!AU fics by now. It's genuinely so amazing and I'm planning on printing it and putting it in my "special forever" fic folder.

Thank you for your work!!! <3

Avatar

Thank you so much! I am honored that my fic has earned a place in your forever folder.

I've been thinking about Geralt's declaration of "No more experiments" when he chopped of slugobor's head, and it's got me thinking. How will mages and other scientifically incluned folks react? Like okay, I've always been fascinated by medical history, but a large part of it *is* experimentation. Like vaccines, for example. Obviously what mages have done is monstrous, but experimentation *is* an important aspect of the scientific method. Maybe Yen and the other wolf mages end forming a sort of ethics review board for the stuff involving sentients or something. I also like the idea of a mage (perhaps a teacher from Aretuza?) approaching the Wolf to ask for guidelines *because* experimentation is such an integral part of science, magic, alchemy, etc.

Like I said, I've been thinking about it, so I thought I'd make an offering to the plot bunnies

Avatar

They probably will need to set up an ethics board, yes, because what Geralt meant was: "No more involuntary, probably fatal, definitely torturous experiments on people, for no good purpose but sadistic interest in what will happen," but that's not nearly as dramatic to say.

I made bread today! And as I reached for my third slice (within 15 minutes of removal from the oven, naturally), I heard the voice of Inex whisper “…you should put some honey on that”. And I thought it an excellent idea - truly, it is the essence of love!

This delights me wholeheartedly!

First time I read accidental warlord I was playing nursemaid to my previous roommate, who'd just gotten top surgery, so I had long hours to while away between attending him. Now I'm doing a full reread right after I've had a major surgery. I guess this is just my "recovering from surgeries" series now? XD That said I do pretty frequent rereads of the Jan chapters and Especially the Marika x Griffin fic, which is my absolute favorite. It must be said, you make a damn good oc

Avatar

I am glad to provide useful distractions for recovering from surgeries! May your recovery be swift and as painless as possible. Thank you so much for your kind words - I am so glad people like my multitudinous OCs!

Following the ask earlier about the elves and Ciri being from Cintra -- is there a "no hassling nonhumans" clause in the current treaty between the Wolflands and Cintra? How did Calanthe take it, if so?

Avatar

There absolutely is. And Calanthe was grumpy but also signed the treaty in the aftermath of the Warlord of the North taking over quite a lot of the North and since he wasn't demanding tribute or human sacrifices or even Cintra's surrender she was willing to sign and keep her word.
