GOetry - We’re going on an adventure!
*Sorry for being a day late! Life happened.
For the eighth week of the GOetry world tour, we're traveling to New Zealand! But before diving into this week’s poetry form, let’s explore this beautiful country.
Named after a small Dutch province, New Zealand is a land of stunning landscapes and iconic landmarks. Marvel at Auckland’s Sky Tower, offering panoramic city views. Experience the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, where bubbling mud pools and geysers shape the land. Feel the power of Huka Falls, where the Waikato River surges through a rocky gorge. Wander along the tranquil shores of Lake Wanaka, framed by the Southern Alps. And don’t miss the breath taking fjords of Milford Sound, a true marvel of nature.
So let's sit down under the Tāne Mahuta tree and write a poem for this week's prompt!
This Week’s Prompt
What is a Monotetra?
A Monotetra is a poetic form consisting of four-line stanzas (quatrains) written in tetrameter—meaning each line has eight syllables. The key feature of a Monotetra is that all four lines of a stanza share the same end rhyme, and the final line is a repeated phrase or variation of itself. This gives the poem a rhythmic, almost musical quality.
How to Write a Monotetra:
- Each stanza has four lines (quatrains).
- Every line has eight syllables.
- The rhyme scheme is AAAA (all lines in a stanza rhyme).
- The final line of each stanza repeats the last phrase, creating a punchy and lyrical effect.
- This poem can be as short as one quatrain and as long as you like!
Example:
"The view from up here" by Robert Lee Brewer
We found a rock on the hilltop
that we used as reason to stop
and talk about our school's sock hop-
-where music pops, where music pops.
She told me I should learn to dance,
but I was concerned with romance
and wanted to make an advance-
-she said, "No chance;" she said, "No chance."
