a whole bunch of gazan mutual aid projects and nonprofits. if the decision of which individual fundraiser to give to feels too daunting, or if you just want to help as many people as possible in one go, these are great initiatives to support.

  • care for gaza - focuses on providing food and essential supplies. donate here or here.
  • connecting humanity - securing internet access via donations of virtual sim cards (esims). if you can't afford a whole plan yourself, crips for esims is a communal pool that will use your donation to purchase and maintain esims
  • gaza soup kitchen - provides food, medical care, and classes for children. also has a gofundme
  • glia gaza medical support initiative - provides medical care through field clinics and tents at hospitals. donations can also be sent through their website.
  • ele elna elak - provides clean water, food, clothing, and shelter. they also have a gofundme
  • life for gaza - raising money for the gaza municipality to repair water and waste management infrastructure
  • taawon - partners with local civil organizations to provide food, water, medical care, shelter, and basic supplies
  • the sameer project - running various initiatives providing tents, medical care, and necessities. they have their own encampment project focused on sheltering families with children, sick and disabled members, or members in need of perinatal care
  • islamic relief worldwide's gaza emergency appeal - provides food, water, hygiene kits, medical supplies, and psychological support
  • baitulmaal - provides a variety of necessities, including food, water, shelter, and medical supplies
  • gaza mutual aid fund - distributes food, hygiene products, water, and other essential supplies, including financial support. run by @/el-shab-hussein's amazing friend Mona. updates can be found on her instagram.
  • hygiene kits for gaza - provides hygiene supplies including menstrual products, wipes, and toothbrushes/toothpaste
  • anera - provides a variety of necessities, including food, water, hygiene supplies, medicine, blankets and mattresses, and psychological care
  • palestine children's relief fund - provides supplies and support with a focus on children. also has an initiative for lebanon
  • dahnoun mutual aid - provides water, food, tents, baby supplies, financial support, and other necessities. updates can be found through their instagram

certainly this is not an exhaustive list, so please feel free to add on other projects or organizations that i didn't include. and as always, please take the time to donate if you can and share. it truly makes all the difference.

Does anyone else remember when Elon was like "if anyone knows how to end world hunger for 6 billion USD, I'll fund it" and UNICEF was like "we're going to spend a month to make a plan to end world hunger for 6 billion USD and Elon is going to fund it" and Elon was like "actually, nah" and then bought Twitter instead?

I think that was one of the worst things I'll ever see in my life.

I still think that should be the thing for which he's the most famous. It should be brought up every time he's mentioned. In any news article, any interview, any history book. "Elon Musk, who was offered a chance to end world hunger and turned it down." Put it on his fucking gravestone.

Adult Transgender Legislative Risk Map, November 2024

This map is made and maintained by transgender journalist Erin Reed. She read all 550 bills targeting trans people in America in 2023 and 586 so far in 2024 and she scores state safety based on proposed and enacted legislation. She regularly updates the map (including explanations of recent legislative changes) on her site. She has a separate map for trans youth (which: warning, is even more scary), since a lot of policies target minors specifically.

It’s depressing as all hell, but Erin does great work and I’ve been using her maps to plan my career and vacations for years. It’s helped me figure out where to apply for grad school, and helps me keep track of what states I cannot do a layover in while flying because of bathroom bills.

The tik tokification of 'bad words' like sex/seggs suicide/unalive pedohile/PDFile grape/rape only originally censored because of moderation rules but now in colloquial (online) speech is going to send me to an early grave

Idk there used to be the sex pistols saying fuck on tv and now randos won't type out rape in a youtube comment. Not that time is linear but it's a weird purity(?) moment looking back.. If you're 17 you should be saying bad words that's supposed to be ur whole thing come on

It should really be mentioned that these "moderation rules" were put in place not to protect the youth from any "bad" language, but to appease to the sensibilities of advertisers and credit card companies who didn't want to be associated with such language.

This weird "purity" moment is in fact corporate sanitization, and call me crazy, but I think corporations shouldn't be allowed to shape the language and culture of the common person in such a manner.

These aren't even 'bad words', though!

I hope people who use these bastard replacement words where it isn't necessary for censorship workaround know that all it does is make it harder to discuss the things the 'bad' words describe. 'Rape' is a neutral word that describes a deplorable action. If you're shut down (online or elsewhere) for saying, 'I was raped' because 'You can't say rape,' what does that achieve? The rape still happened.

Can we bring the moral focus back to reality instead of the language used to signify it?

Talk about suicide. Talk about abuse. Talk about sex ffs. The idea that there's something wrong with saying 'sex' is particularly bewildering to me. The other things have a victim or are upsetting issues, sure, but how on earth is 'sex' a bad word??? What the actual fuck?? Sex is banal!! If anything, it's cute and prosocial!!

There is nothing wrong with saying these words. Nothing!!! Speaking accurately and in a way that doesn't make serious issues sound like a joke is important!

It genuinely makes me sick to think of how this baby talk censorship can and does lead to people not getting the help they need.

How easy would it be for an adult to dismiss a child reporting that they're being "graped" or shown "corn" by a "PDF File" because they don't know what those terms really mean?

How is someone supposed to feel safe opening up about their suicidal ideation with people who won't even let them use those words?

prev also made a good point about how, even if you DO have to avoid specific words for whatever reason, there are ways to still talk about serious issues using indirect language that isn't as infantalizing (or frankly confusing) as the terms popularized on tiktok

if you cant say sex to talk about consensual sex you can say "making love" or "hooking up". if you cant say kill or suicide you can say "taking someone's life" or "taking one's own life". if you can't say pedophile you can say "adult who is attracted to children" or "adult who takes advantage of children" or "predator". if you cant say porn you can say "adult" or "mature" videos/images/content/etc. if you can't say penis, vagina, or genitals you can say "privates"

ideally you're able to talk about these things directly, but even if you aren't i promise there are better euphemisms out there for pretty much all of these terms than the tiktok versions

this messed up vintage cat sewing pattern has tormented me since i saw it & like some other folks have done in that post - i tried my hand at tweaking the pattern to resemble the illustration (and my personal tastes) a little more. i've ended up with this, which i have only tested at a small scale and not this final version exactly (where i have done such things as further widening the cheeks and finalizing the leg shapes.) i bestow it upon you nice folks now 👐

go forth and make weird little beanbag kittens! pls show me if you do!
