I can't stop thinking about young Stan and Ford running the pawn shop.

Just think about it.

Filbrick Pines was a good enough businessman, and a bad enough father, to have his two youngest boys running the shop whenever he stepped out for an errand, for lunch, or for whatever reason. He'd have them man the counter, watch the cash register, all of it.

Imagine Stan and Ford, still in that young age where they look almost indistinguishable, probably eight, maybe nine, running the shop in that excited way all kids do when they get to feel like they're doing an "Adult task"

The door above the shop jingles and both boths snap to attention, "Pines Pawns, are you buying or selling?"

Ford would handle the appraisal if someone was selling. Even at eight, he's got that eye for things of value, six tiny fingers testing the weight of of a watch to see if it's gold plated or solid. Every item is scrutinized over, every detail. A speck of dirt makes the buying price go down, a hint of a scratch means less for whoever is trying to pawn off their jewelry. Once Ford's satisfied with whatever value the thing has, he'll lean over and whisper it into Stan's ear, clear as day before the customer.

Stan's always been a people person. Even as a kid, he's got the personality, he's got the showmanship. He's not afraid to butter someone up, and keep Ford's estimate in line while he lowballs the shit out of them. He'd hold your grandma's diamond wedding ring that Ford told him is worth at least six hundred, eye it carefully, and tell you He'd take it for two hundred, cash.

On the other end, buying something from the pawnshop is a whole other deal. Ford would explain, in painfully academic terms for a kid his age about the craftsmanship of a watch, or a pair of earrings. How, actually, the pawnshop should really be charging MORE. Stan's not afraid to pick up on that either, to mosey up to some poor schmuck and make em cough up another fifty bucks for something that's worth less than twenty five.

Do you think, even years later, even separated, they both still can't hide the kid manning the pawn shop counter inside them? Do you think when Stan first opened the Mystery Shack, he was relieved to be doing something he knew? Do you think he ever wished there was someone with a better eye for it, who could play the part of the expert to back up Stan's wild claims? Do you think Ford ever picked up some foreign interdimensional jewelry and weighed it in his hands, his mind already rattling off numbers. Do you think he turned to empty air, just for half a second, like he was going to whisper what it was actually worth to his brother, only to remember he wasn't there?

Anyway. Just thinking about two boys in Jersey, manning the counter of their father's shop, reading comic books between customers and being so, so small.

i will forever cry over how robin lost ramy and griffin after both of them saved him. only for him not to be able to continue life. because the grief was greater than he could bear. the pain was too much for him to think of the life after the strike. after all he did in the spirit of his late brother and dearest friend.

i will forever cry over robin letting victoire go. i simply couldn't find the words to describe the bond that they had. it was meant to be. victoire was the voice of reason between the two and robin just couldn't get through all of it, not without griffin and ramy. she made up her mind and so did he and it was hurtful to witness this two souls make peace with their choices. im going insane over this.

Babel, by RF Kuang, is fun cause the first half is sad but also really sweet and hopeful and relatively low stakes and you’re like “aw this is nice, found family, thanks” and then suddenly it’s the most intense most emotionally heart wrenching book you’ve ever read in your life so that’s cool I guess.
