Nick Carraway is in a constant state of just feeling like shit. He isnβt sickly by any means, but rather, constantly in a state of mild dehydration, lack of vitamins, and iron deficiency.
Itβs perfectly manageable, but just too much of a burden in his eyes to take care of, but then he then proceeds to wonder why he feels like garbage all the time. It just puts him in a gloomy, bad mood and he never wants to get out and do anything cause he just feels terrible.

In my interpretation, Jay Gatsby is a queer man of color trying so so so so hard to fit into the typical "white cishet american dream" stereotype. And he fails at it and that is his downfall. The fact that he never got to actually be himself due to systemic oppression is the tragedy of his character arc. Die mad, that's what TGG is to me.
