The counter-argument

“For many Netflixers, including members of its younger demographic, VOD and binge-watching are not about social exile but about enabling and enhancing participation in social conversations and cliques”

Sidneyeve Matrix. "The Netflix Effect: Teens, Binge-Watching, and On-Demand Digital Media Trends." Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures 6, no. 1 (2014): 119-138. https://muse.jhu.edu/ (accessed June 15, 2018).

this text argues that binge-watching does not hinder social activity, but instead enhances it. though people talking about shows they share a mutual interest in. I have to admit that I have generated a conversation through the mutual respect of a television programme, sometimes it is what has sparked a conversation, through overhearing someones interest in a tv show that I watch or have seen. Understandably this does not mean that year-long friendships can occur from this, but it is possible for two individuals to have a decent conversation based on their mutual liking to a tv series. Often discussions are had on different perspectives to the film. I do agree with the statement, however, I believe that the increase in binge-watching tv can result in unsociable behaviour in some individuals.

Sophia Tao theory

Tao, Sophia. “More Students Start to Binge Watch over the Summer.” El Estoque. Monta Vista High School, 22 Aug. 2013. Web. 14 June 2014.

This is very interesting, id like to find out what or how this information is formulated. if this is true, and there are visual representations of reliable data, could this mean that viewing content distributors such as Netflix produce more shows during the summer season? or since students typically finish their exams and coursework just before/during the summer period, they find themselves with little or nothing to do, and their main source of entertainment is to watch new immersive television shows and movies?

Realisation

Television has become something to be gorged upon, with tales designed to be told over months consumed in a matter of hours.

–Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times

I have recently started watching Netflix’s ‘Once Upon A Time’. to say the least it has latched onto my endeavours as a Netflix user. I find myself losing sleep over the evergrowing storyline. however, it is quite interesting to see how the directors of the tv series have managed to amalgamate all fairytales from my youth into one story, in one episode i see myself watching a story based on the life of the beauty and the beast and then suddenly find myself captivated by the drama caused by the queen (from snow white) involving belle (the beauty and the beast) and Rumplestiltskin, who coincidently plays the beast in this episode, a very unique way to tell the story. although hard to immerse myself in at the start. I now find myself gorging over every episode at the end of the day, on my way to work and university. and subsequently, while I'm doing assignments. tales lasting months, but I seemed to have watched years in a few hours.

Quotes for the day

As more people turn to Netflix to catch up, … the social element of television, that infamous water-cooler factor, is the first casualty.
Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times
Found this upon reading into an article on Netflix binging and thought it was quite a fitting statement. if this is recognised as an epidemic then how far will this get before it effects out social and productive skills indefinitely? always putting of tasks and social meetings among other things to get that last episode in, that last piece of information you need to fuel yourself until you run out endorphins and watch the rest later…like the quote says… call it a drug. I know I've been hooked on tv shows many times. with the ease of having apps on our phone and wifi everywhere, and of course, Netflix’s download option.

Quentin Tarantino, one of my favourite directors, whats said speaks a lot about how the mind of a director works, and yet this is only a small part of their imagination. to be able to create a piece of art that shows meaning in different ways to many people is something I find fascinating. to be able to create a feature film with the intent to have it reach people and generate numerous amounts of perspectives and throughout the production process keep an open mind on what has to be done.

Binge-watching.

Whatever our televisual drug of choice—Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, Homeland—we’ve all put off errands and bedtime to watch just one more, a thrilling, draining, dream-influencing immersion experience that has become the standard way to consume certain TV programs.

this quote has genuine subtextual meaning underneath the body. it is very common for a considerable amount of people to have stayed up and avoided social interactions and rearrange plans to watch episodes after episodes and possibly series after series of television shows because of their captivity.

we are in an age where a single tv series that has been created by a set of directors and writers has the power and storytelling capabilities to manipulate our daily lives so easily. an epidemic that has affected not only myself but friends and relatives.

music begins where the possibilities of language end

jean Sibelius

it is said that spoken language makes up for roughly 7 percent of communication. that being said it is perfectly feasible to understand that music can be a good way to build bridges and communicate as music, be it classical, rock, jazz, or hip-hop sparks emotion, feeling and sometimes creativity in other work. Personally, whenever I listen to music I envision scenes of movies and creative work that could accompany the piece, it begins to get my brain running on scenes and trailers that would work well. I feel the tv industry would not be as successful as it is now if music was not around to build the scene. A scene shot perfectly brings admiration, a scene shot with the right music brings emotion.

I once learned in a music tutorial that music is mainly appreciated through film and television. I feel there is some truth behind that.

learning about how Andre Bazin believes that it is not the actors that make up the scene, a scene or a shot can stun an audience just by visual, and audio effect, for example, doors slamming, wind blowing, eree composed sound effects, even silence can heighten the intensity of a scene.

television and film is the only way you can value music composure

on this day I learned that Steve Jobs managed to convince other music sharing bodies to allow him to share music but based on one term, that everything on iTunes remains £1, each music piece is sold at the same value
