Call for Beta Readers!! Please boost this post!

๐Ÿ’• Queer contemporary romance ๐Ÿ’•

I have a novel (where the romance happens) and a prequel novella (where they're kids and the romance doesn't quite happen) and I'm seeking beta readers for both. I'm planning to publish the novel first, but wrote them with the intent that they could be read in either order so it's up to the beta which order they'd like to read them in, or if they only want to beta one.

Red, like my bleeding heart in your hand - 25k - Nash has enough to worry about with an abusive father at home and a little sister to keep out of harm's way, but when a boy his age, Teddy, moves in next door he finds it impossible to stay away even though he really, really should.

Warning for child abuse - mostly referenced

Blue, like don't forget about me - 60k - Twenty years later, Nash reconnects with Teddy at a funeral of all places. With grief, hurt feelings, and broken promises on both sides--they've got no business trying this thing again... and yet...

Warnings for: references to past child abuse, one (1) sexy scene, several references and innuendoes to sex that happens between scenes, and funerals (there are like,,,,an improbable number of funerals for this fluffy little romance idk man)

INTERESTING STUFF:

  • Ambulatory cane user, undiagnosed autistic MC
  • Jewish, POC, asthmatic, dietary nightmare love interest
  • Small town Appalachian setting
  • Aro/Ace side character
  • MC works at a nursing home and is besties with all the old folks

I'm thinking two months turnaround if you're reading both, but am super flexible on timing. Mostly I'm looking for reactions to what you're reading: what hits right, what doesn't, what's missing. I'm especially interested in perspectives from anyone who can relate to one or more of the traits listed above!

If you're interested, let me know how you'd like to connect and share files (email, discord, etc.) and thanks for reading this far!

Been making good progress on the second book ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'd say a good 50% on the first draft. Writing has felt more unrestricted since I've already laid out the world's foundations. It's like I've allowed myself to be more generous if that makes sense. In the first book, I was more delicate with information, that egg on a spoon race type of thing. Definitely a different experience but a better one.

Momentum, pls Spartan-kick me more ๐Ÿ™

Last Line Tag Game

I was tagged by @illarian-rambling for this. This is the last line that I have written.

The Arkodian Bronze hammer within which the wind spirit dwelt was all but glued to his hand. He even ate and slept with it. The only time he would be parted from the hammer was when it came time to relieve himself, and even then, the hammer and Bop remained within arm's reach.

Pretty simple, nothing too exciting. Bottom of the the first page of chapter 2 of book 2. Bop is a character that I haven't introduced on Tumblr yet. I might put them in the next character intro poll though! (Speaking of which, if you haven't voted in that yet you should, here)

I'll tag @persnickety-peahen , @simonnebethel, and @jclibanwrites No pressure and sorry if any of you have already been tagged by someone else, there is a lot of overlap it seems.

Tagged by @somethingclevermahogony and thank you! This is the last line I've written:

Sera groaned from the pit of her soul. A second longer, she wouldโ€™ve unlocked the window and won their little game for once. She pouted for a moment but a dumb grin soon surfaced. The tip of her pinkish button nose smudged the window. She waved to her father until her arm ached, until the two riders vanished into the horizon of beige fields, until the gleam in her eyes lost its soft light. To a thief, silence meant everything.

Despite Sera being a central character in the 1st book, I didn't dive deep into her story. She'll have a bigger chunk of the spotlight in the 2nd book though. Here, I wrote about the impression of a father's words to a child. Can't wait to write more about her, but I'm constantly being distracted by my two pups xD

No pressure too~ I'm new to this and I hope I did it correctly lol.

Because the paperback is coming Feb. 21, the eBook version of A Questionable Greatness will be totally FREE for 3 days on Amazon Kindle! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

In whichever order: grab a coffee, pet the neighbor's scary dog, and download the eBook through Kindle or the Kindle app on your phone. ๐Ÿ‘

And if you're a hoarder, I'll gladly be the bent spoon in your TBR treasure chest. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Happy reading! โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ“–

Main quest, I should be finding reviews but what I did today:

Fed the pups, played with said pups, and napped... with the two furballs.

Side quest:

I finished the first chapter of the second book... Then resumed playing with hannie and somi.

I forgot how lonely it is to write original fiction.

Where are the kudos? The subscriptions? The comments? The people cheerleading me chapter to chapter? Where are the kind words and compliments and reassurances that what I'm writing isn't complete crap? Where are the unhinged emojis? The asks on Tumblr? Where are my mutuals in my dms apologizing for not reading the latest chapter right away (side note, you know you don't have to apologize at all, right??). Where is the fanart? Where are the recs?

Where is my motivation to keep going?

It's something I've been thinking about a lot, actually, lately. How the experience of writing fanfic is so unique. How you already have an audience, willing and waiting and captive. And that's really it, isn't it? You have an audience. It's almost performative, writing fanfic. It's being on a stage, a one-person show (or two, if you do it with a friend); it's getting live reactions to your performance, it's feeding off the energy of the crowd and informing it back in a feedback loop; it's improvised, sometimes, in almost-real-time. It's building something that you couldn't have built by yourself. A thing that takes on a life of its own.

It's an experience you can't get writing original fiction, and, honestly, not having it is making it hard to write something original at all.

When I read, I close off the outside world. When I write my own fiction, I do the same but with a hand on the steering wheel. I think of it as a Sunday drive meant for you, your world, and your characters. If anyone reads and wants to tag along, that's sweet. Hop on in, I say.

I may have shot myself in the foot here. I applied for a promotion service, but they suggested that I obtain reviews first. The promo date was moved to Feb 6 for my convenience (super thank you), and now I'm scrambling to get reviews lol

I've been messaging people all morning. The introvert in me is flatlining. People from the Philippines don't use Amazon as much as other countries so that $50 requirement to review has me in a pinch.

Right now, I'm trying ARCs and looking for mutuals who would be interested. Fingers crossed, legs crossed.

Today I joined a few Facebook groups, but I'm beyond introverted to put myself out there and join conversations/posts. Like, I have to type out what I wanna say on notepad first just to make sure of what I wanna say and not accidentally hit the send button xD
