It still sometimes amazes me how much of Astarion's iconic persona the entire fandom is swooning over right now is an act. A rather shallow act that crumbles way too easily than he would ever admit.
Of course, he has that mischievous, flirtatious, overflowing in suave, sass and confidence streak within him - but so much of it is an overgrown paper - thin facade.
I don't even mean it when it comes to emotional vulnerability. Astarion is only able to pull off his persona when everything about the situation seems to be under his control - and when that shifts, he's behaving in such a dorky way.
His entire self - confidence is quite easily shattered when encountering anyone with an actual, deeper kind of self - assuredness. When charming his way through or dominating the situation isn't an option, he's quite lost. With Araj - who holds every advantage over him, knowing damn well what she wants and who he is - he stutters, wiggles and mumbles, utterly confused. With the Gur leader, who calls him out on everything right on the spot - his initial reaction is to do the same, until he sees they have something they want him to do, and that's his ticket to establishing himself in the situation. Even with Tav in the beginning, he acts so cheekily confident because he's absolutely certain that if something between him and his momentary ally goes wrong, he will always be able to make them fall under his spell and seduce them to ease every possible tention between them. When you call him out on any shitty behaviour, he's like an angry child who just got mildly scolded, but he mostly relents, knowing he's out of other options.
