Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now

He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.

He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor

Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going

For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.

He has yielded the floor at 25 hrs and 4 mins. His eyes are so wide they look like they’re going to bug out of his skull so I don’t blame him for stopping. He said to go out and get in some good trouble.

Addition for those unaware: Cory Booker is black. Strom Thurmond set the previous record about 70 years ago in protest of civil rights. Booker spent much of the time I was watching talking about the importance of working together for the people and the idea that it's not "left versus right but right versus wrong."

The new record speech is on the right side of history.

The Quirks of Being a Ladybug

Chapter 4 - Purr

Summary: Apparently, the strangeness didn't end with magic, suddenly having a secret identity, or saving Paris on a weekly basis. (AKA, the one where the miraculous holders have to deal with random animal traits)

Adrien sprinted up the steps to Francois Dupont, backpack slung over one shoulder, late note clutched tightly in one sweaty fist.

His dad had been even more of a perfectionist than usual when it came to photoshoots lately, fussing over lighting and angles to a degree he never had before his mom disappeared. The result was that his photoshoot that morning had stretched even later than normal, later than the late pass from Natalie indicated he’d be absent.

Now, he had missed lunch and would have to join the class in the middle of 4th period—Mme. Mendeleiev’s class. This sucked for two reasons:

  1. Science was his favorite class.
  2. Mme. Mendeleiev hated tardiness.

Adrien didn’t stop running until he was just outside the classroom. Then he stopped and put his ear up to the door. Slowly, tentatively, he cracked open the door to the science lab and peeked inside; Mme. Mendeleiev had her back turned to the classroom and was lecturing and writing formulas on the board. Adrien opened the door just enough to slip in, tip-toed over to put the late pass on her desk, and scurried to his seat.

Shoulders hunched, he hurriedly pulled out his notebook and homework. He dug around in his bag—he couldn’t find his pencil, where-?

Monsieur Agreste. This is a science class, not choir practice!”

Oh. Oh no. He’d been humming again.

Warm Weather Clothing in the Water Tribes

Broke: Katara and Sokka wear fabric clothing outside the tundra.

Woke: Katara and Sokka wear fish leather outside the tundra.

Pictured above: Nanai clothing set, Oroch robe & hat, Ainu robe (attush), another Nanai robe, and different shades of dyed fish leather

Fish leather is a popular clothing material across many arctic and subarctic cultures. Cultures that utilize fish leather include Ainu, various Siberian ethnic groups along the Amur River, and Alaska Native groups such Inupiat & Yupik. It's labor-intensive to produce but the end product is light, waterproof, and stylish.

I've started learning Norwegian for a friend and also to try to get my mom learning, but I'm already an advanced beginner in Danish, so to make sure I don't confuse the languages and lose all my progress in Danish, I've started translating all the practice Norwegian sentences on Duolingo into Danish. Nothing crazy, mostly just remembering the pronunciation differences.

Except now I'm in the habit of translating all my practice sentences on Duolingo into Danish, which means I've started translating my Spanish into Danish. It's going surprisingly well; I know more Danish than I thought!
