What is Our Wonderland? a.k.a. the dumpster fire that is my ace-themed queer horror game or something

Our Wonderland is a visual novel / horror game / horrific dating sim??? / mangled mess of Fucked Up chars reaching their 30s but not? understanding who they are?? and twisted grisly things happen???

It stars five childhood friends with a sEcReT—they opened a Magical Wish-Granting Wonderland in their youth (as one does). Twenty years later, however, they've all turned into barely functioning adults just trying to Get By™, each with their own Traumas exacerbated by their struggles to fit in to a cis- hetero- allonormative world (as well as Pining,,, lots and lots of unrequited Pining). Cue a Return to Wonderland. What could happen now that they're all Verifiable Messes with the power to wish for anything they want??? omg,,, maybe they'll eat each other or something wouldn't that be wild omg,,,

The Woobies

  • Iggy: Resident Ace Bean that has no idea what he wants and spends most of his time Confused and Overwhelmed and avoiding social situations like the plague; just wants to fit in and for everyone to be Happy™
  • Genzou: The loud-mouthed snarky Best Friend who loves his favorite pal so much dear god do not touch a hair on his god damn head or he will fucking murder you (definitely Not Gay why would you even think that shm,,,)
  • Orlam: Nobody likes him he's just kinda there accumulating more and more Debilitating Trauma dear fucking lord is this guy sad and lonely somebody please l-l-love him; forlorn bisexual who longs to be the Life of the Party (may or may not be a cannibal, who can say really,,,)
  • Gidget: Just your average girl who wants to be Perfect™; did not ever wear boys' clothes or have issues with her body and definitely was never made fun of when trying to use the restroom; likes Iggy perhaps a little bit Too Much
  • Bucks: Homecoming queen and softball star; has everything she ever wanted in life—a loving husband, a beautiful baby, and a lovely house with a white picket fence; skilled with an Axe

What You Can Expect From This Atrocity:

  • Around 288k words of Pure Unadulterated Pain (20 to 25 hours or something idk)
  • A ridiculous 520 CGs because I apparently Can't Stop Drawing
  • Some pretty sweet cinematic ending sequences I guess
  • A cool soundtrack??? I did not create it but I've been told it's Good so we'll just go with that
  • Gore mixed with feels mixed with moments that will make you want to RIP YOUR HEART OUT
  • A Strange and Deplorable art style that apparently grows on you or so I've been told
  • Gay people kissing or something
  • COMPLICATED LOVE SQUARES???
  • Horrible ace nightmares—BUT ALSO CATHARTIC ACE JOY???
  • Cannibalism

P.S. in case it wasn't obvious this game is rather Dark and contains many a horrible thing such as Murder, Torture, and the Eating of People (some of the arcs also tread somewhat heavily into Sexual Themes Territory, too, given all the overarching ace stuff), so please please please check the content warnings on the itch page before playing! It's def for mature audiences only.

UHHHH why is OW the top VN on itch right now?? It's never even been on the first page before let alone the top. I assume it's cuz I labeled the new alpha release as a Major Update but I did the same thing whenever I released a new arc and it sure never did this. Did the itch algorithm change or something? Well, I'll take it LOL. Thanks for the anniversary present, itch 🤧💕

I'm so happy you enjoyed the remaster so far!! "almost like I was replaying the game again" SOB HEARING THAT MAKES MY HEART SQUISH. I was hoping it could feel kinda like that for ppl that already played it. that it could feel like playing it fresh almost, because the experience would feel a bit different (and hopefully heightened a bit). So I'm really really happy hearing that

Day1: "When did you first play OW? (WHICH ARC) and how did you find it?"

Hmm. When?🤔

I think it's either 2023 or 2022, in Itch, first in the side games(STLD) (and then I found out about the Main Game).

I remember I was scrolling through the page, looking for something that interested me, and I just happened to land on... Ahem, "Texting Iggy," and then "Save the Last Dance."

There, I was interested in Orlam, and I wanted to learn about him in detail, which Carrot helped me with, with recommendations on what games to play (I generally thought that the Arcs were divided into different games! Hehehe)

I just happened to be on the penultimate update, where Arc 5 was not yet fully finished🤔

#oh yeah i remember that it was save the last dance!!!#i feel like a number of people started following the game around that time#also 5.2 release came shortly after so it was a good time to play almost the full game#ahhh thanks so much for answering!!

Day 1:

I played Our Wonderland back around February.

A good friend of mine was talking about the topic of visual novels and I recommend that I should play Our Wonderland. They introduced me to some of the characters and I shrugged and said, "I'll play it one day" since I was already busy with my electives and other subjects.

Unfortunately, I got sick for three/two?? weeks which sucks. I felt worse each day that it got to one point that I felt crippled in bed. (Sorry. Bad joke 😅)

Due to me not being able to sleep sometimes, I would play on my phone. However, my phone was dead one night so I played on my laptop. Most of the games I downloaded felt lame and that's when I tried Our Wonderland.

When I first played it I was like;

"alright, after the first playthrough, I'll go to sleep."

Which was when I started playing Arc 1. My fucking god. It was the best experience of my life. I already posted a whole ass rant about how the first ARC already put me into tears and emotional turmoil and how I felt so stupid that it was just the ending of ONE SINGULAR ARC.

Okay so I started playing OW when it was fully released fjjskd I downloaded it in my fathers place cause their wifi is much superior honestly haha fhhsd but I watched a playthrough of it before I played it because I didn't have a laptop at the time hehe

I found it cause I was scrolling through itch.io trying to find a good game to play and the artstyle really intrigued me HDJSJSJ also fun fact!??! I thought the entire game was gonna be in the castle cause of the screenshots on the itch page?!?! But yes thats how I found out about our wonderland!!!

(It was on my play later list for so long until I read the reviews for fun and was so curious about it that I watched the playthrough. And the rest is history.)

Day 1

Hmmm, well, I know it was a fair few months ago. The full game was definitely out by then. If we’re talking exact date ill have to check my archive brb

Okay so it looks to be sometime around the 20th of September. It DID take me two whole nighters afterall haha! Which were liveblogged, as some of you may remember. Gosh I still cant believe carrot was following along some of this 😅

But yeah, I played it because I needed something to keep me awake during the two all nighters I was trying to shift my sleep schedule before therapy. And boy did it keep me AWAKE. Because it captivated me so so much. Very few visual novels have done that.

As for how I found it? Well to be quite honest I don’t remember! I know that it was sitting around in my “to play” horror games list for quite a while. My best guess was either in the reccomended games that show up when downloading another, or during the couple of times I browsed game jams. That’s my best guess anyway

In one of the darkest times of my life so far, your game, the community it created and most of all a certain person I met and became friends with thanks to it have really, and I mean really made all the difference. Things are far from back to normal for me still, but I feel like I would be so, so much deeper down in this pit if not for both this game and the butterfly effect it had on my life, so to speak. Day 1: The first question doesn't quite work for me (as some of them don't LOL) but I'll tweak it slightly. I started officially working on OW in its final form in August of 2021! Though I had part of the Arc 1 script already written and had tried to make the game in other formats before this (two times as an RPG horror and once as a CG-only storybook-style VN).

Some insider lore: those that played the game after Arc 3's release but before Arc 4 are the only ones who got to choose the order of Arcs 2 and 3. When I released Arc 4, I got rid of this because it was bad for the story -- the arcs need to be played in the set order.

Also: those that played the game after the Arc 2 release got to see the final cutscene with a different song. I couldn't find a commercial-use recording of this song and I wanted to put the game in bundles, so I traded it out for a song that allowed for commercial use for the Arc 3 release version.

HELP how am I supposed to rate it??? 🤣 I could never rate a playlist you personally made for your associations for a character hahaha because to you it means a lot, same as the iggy playlist I made means the world to me lol

this playlist is great though! admittedly I maybe know only half the songs LOL (which makes it even harder for me, as I have no personal associations with those songs, and for me, personal associations are so important with the songs I relate to things and/or enjoy). I also don't like listening to ballads/slower songs unless I have a strong personal association so I tend to almost never put them on playlists dhdhdhd

I like the oldies/older songs on here that I recognize though! especially sloop John b I love that song for some reason (strong personal association from a book I read as a child LOL). head over heels always reminds me of the movie Donnie Darko... (which also weirdly gives me some Iggy vibes in a way). come sail away is also a great song... also love the Kirby addition at the end HAHAHA

I don't think I can rate this though 🤣 I think I don't know enough about too many of the songs, but I really like the ones I do know! and it has good vibes in general. I love when people make their own playlists for the chars with songs they associate with them! I feel like it's a way for people to combine music that is important to them with characters that are important to them and that makes me want to weep in feels sob
